I love the way Kurt plays lithium here. Hearing every note clearly picked in the clean sections is nice to hear. He didn't really play it like that in the later years.
Opiates relaxes muscles in your throat and does change your voice and makes in more mono tone. His later performances near the end got more and more relaxed due to this.
If you've listened to the latest box set 'With the lights out" you hear a lot of that type of thing. That's a part of the reason you shouldn't read to much into his lyrics, they were more of an after-thought. Cobain was more about the sound..

Not really the "First" Live Performance it was played here at the Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA during their Video shoot (which they were gonna originally gonna record some songs here and then record some footage around Aberdeen, WA and make an Hour Long VHS tape and sell it to fans at their shows, but it never happened, it was basically an early idea of the VHS tape that came out in 1994 "Live Tonight! Sold Out!!"). The reason they played "Lithium" here on 03/20/90 at the Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA was for Krist to Learn/get down the Bass line for the song....the First Live Performance of Lithium was on April 1, 1990 at Cabaret Metro, Chicago, IL and then was recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, WI with Butch Vig April 2-6, 1990.

Much love to Chad Channing but Dave Grohl gave them that extra kick to the top. It's not even the power as much as the groove. Grohl played everything with a little more momentum but then he also had that pocket. I can still hear that snare hit in Milk It before the chorus. Just fucking perfect.
Dave Grohl didn't give them jack shit. He couldn't even play the drumline right in the Nevermind sessions; Butch forced him to play to a click track because he couldn't keep a simple beat. Kurt had to teach him how to play In Bloom. He couldn't get the drumline right on Something in the Way, so Butch just had Kurt play it acoustic. Dave Grohl is the most overrated drummer of all time!

I saw them for the first and only time at Green River Community College near Seattle around 1988. There were three bands that night, headlined by the Young Fresh Fellows. Nirvana was the opening act. I had heard of them because they played a lot of clubs around Seattle, but otherwise their concert didn't make much of an impression. It is amazing how popular they became in such a short amount of time.
