My goal is to take 2-3 vacations a year to deal with writing burnout. I always come back fresh and ready to write after a vacation. I'm getting back into more of a regular writing schedule after Covid.
Thank you, Andrea for talking about burnout and dispelling the myth of waiting for the "perfect schedule" before writing my book. I often blame my environment (which I've affectionately called the "animal house"; rowdy and a never-ending carousel of activity with a rambunctious toddler and grownups who always have something going on). I really appreciate the perspective Andrea discussed and felt like she was talking to me (sucky internet and all). This was one of my fave podcast episodes and I've been binging you guys for the past 2 years! Have a great weekend Lindsay, Joe, and Andrea :-)
Good to see I'm not the only one using the unfortunately named GIMP as an alternative to Photoshop. I use Calibre for converting docx to all formats too (though I'll be calling it Calibrey from now on!). Prior to that all book formatting is done in Word, which is perfectly good enough if you've got the time and enough hair to pull 👍
I invested in a used mac and vellum, but my mac ended up being just barely new enough to use vellum. Which meant that as soon as vellum did an update, I could not use any of the new updated stuff with my mac. Soooo frustrating, especially since I made sure to get a mac that had new enough software to work with vellum. But then that changed only a couple years later. However! My absolutely wonderful, tech-savvy husband was able to create a virtual mac for me on my desktop. So now I can use vellum on there, and the best part is that I don't have to use a stupid mac laptop and keyboard anymore 😂 it's great! Vellum has definitely been well worth the money, imo. Trying to format my books with other programs led to so much stress and tears that I would have had to hire out my formatting. Which makes updating back matter difficult, too.
Thank you so much Joe for giving us free or cheap alternatives to Mac products. I too have never owned a Mac, and I've been worried that I would need one if I ever wanted to self-publish.
This was great timing as I get ready to consider how to release my first women's fiction novel. The NL is something I'll really need to get and good point Lindsey about getting an influencer after you have a few books out in that genre.
I have no books published, but I do have a MacBook Pro and a PC. I write on my MacBook Pro and transfer it over to my PC to put it in Scrivener for editing. I have Vellum on my MacBook Pro, but I’ve never even opened it. I make all of my covers myself with a program that I have on my MacBook Pro.
OMG!! Thank you for this!!! All of it!! You guys rock!!! Andrea, is your internet wifi? I Have wifi and I hate the way it behaves! My son told me to get an ethernet cord and use that. That’s what works for mine. No issues since then. I know I know wifi is so much more convenient without the pain in the butt of a tether but it’s what works for mine. Thanks again, guys!❤️❤️❤️

I use atticus for formatting, it’s a good alternative and improving

I just discovered bookbrush and it’s pretty amazing to create book trailers and mock-ups for those without graphic skills
Thank you Joe to remind all the free tools that exist and don't cost anything or small fees :-)
Thanks once again found episode useful.
