Buying a 1500 Yr Old Ancient Redwood Root

- This was an absolute once in a lifetime experience and opportunity working with this ancient redwood root! I had the pleasure of spending a few days with Daniel & team @ GL Veneer in Huntington Park, Ca, working together we tackled getting the root milled up to my spec, and sand blasted. I will be making this into a custom dining table with a thick glass top supported with standoffs to showcase the beauty of the root system. Stay tuned for a part 2 of this series, as I craft this beauty into a true art piece!

I am 65 years old and never in my life have I ever seen anything so stunning. The table you made that into was so amazing as well Matt.
Thank you my friend!
wow
redwood roots are huge.
the scale of the project is impressive.
To think that magnificent thing was once part of the life support for a giant of the forest. Centuries of wisdom there... I'm happy you guys were treating it with respect. Even a cupful of the sawdust would be my treasure. ❤️❤️
Thank you for that, it's incredible to think of the life it had, all of the intertwined connected roots it was apart of, just crazy.
@@MattsWoodworks yes. It's the W ood W ide Web superhighway. The ground we walk on is teeming, trillions of chemical messages, carried by uncountable filaments. Did you know that trees look after each other? They aren't 'just trees.' They are others. With a life and language we don't yet fully understand. I'm teaching my grandchildren to love trees. And to understand just a bit of what they do. That root portion is a world. Even if now technically dead. One of the guys in your video was petting the wood... I wonder if he was doing so deliberately... Or subconsciously. 🤔
Anyway... Superb work. 👍
DUDEEEEEEE! where is part 2!?!? I need to see it ASAP..
BlackTail Studio sent me over. Here to appreciate the work.
I’m so freaking jealous!!!!!!! Great job
My heart sank watching the saw go into that followed by anxiety and realised I had stopped breathing , what a gem , I'm envious....
Haha it was extremely nerve wrecking, I definitely gained some grey hairs that day!!
Damn that looks awesome. I can’t wait to see it all done. Even the off cuts have so much potential for wicked awesome projects. I look forward to seeing more!
Thank you! I saved all of them, can't wait to utilized the pieces to make something cool!
Buddy, this thing is so awesome. I’ve wanted to do some root stuff for a while. Can’t wait to see this.
Thank you Cam! I’m seriously so excited for this project, should be interesting using the crane to get it up to a second story!
THANKS for the recommendation
So amazing! Can’t wait to see you finish it up.
Hahahaha!!
Thank you so much for putting me on to this really cool channel with your newest video.
I love that he said a lil prayer before he started cutting. Wonder if always does.
Ok a just found the second part to This video just finished watching this one and found your channel subscriptions done. The word is my god that is the most beautiful peice of wood I've ever seen can't wait watch the second part. Been looking for root like that to do something similar to what am guessing your gonna do for long time. 🏴👍
Thank you for watching! The second part video is posted!
Hi Matt! Cam at Blacktail recommended your channel. Looking forward to seeing your work.
Thanks for following Dani!! Tons of fun stuff planned for this year!
That is phenomenal, going to be a masterpiece.
Part 2! This thing is incredible.
It’s coming! Thank you!!!
That’s crazy fella can’t wait to see what you do with it
Incredible !!! Can’t wait to watch the progress
Thank you for following along!
Great video Matt! Look forward to seeing more!
Thank you my man, appreciate the love!
Wow! One of the most beautiful pieces of wood I've ever seen. I hope you have another video out SOON. There are so many things you could do with this. Hurry please lol...
Haha I'm trying my best to get it done, it is just a very tedious project, every little thing I do has to be absolute perfectly thought out. I get one chance at making it a true masterpiece!
@@MattsWoodworks Yeah, I totally understand. Would love to know your thoughts on where your going with it. Do you know what happened to the massive piece that your cut came from? I know I'm not alone but that is just so gorgeous and breath taking. Can't wait to see the final outcome. Good luck and thanks!!!
1st thing i thought was sandblast. Love the results.
WOW - and WOW again - what amazing wood.
Looking at the cut offs, that is just amazing wood quality. The things you can do with that, and I mean all of it, the mind wonders.
Thanks to Cam at Blacktail who recommended your channel.
I know! I keep every last inch of the cut offs! Thought about even keeping the sawdust haha. Thank you for coming over and following along!
@@MattsWoodworks -
Let us know what you create with the sawdust 😂
The fact that I discovered your channel is all thanks to Cam at Blacktail. I was hooked when I saw one of your big tables.
Still, just being a 'weekend DIY:er', I was lost in this great wood.
I totally get that you save every little piece ❤
Got the link thru backtail , and so happy i did. That redwood piece is stunning and i'm looking forward to finished piece!
Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
Beautiful ! There's a furniture/design store in NorCal that sells imported Teak root table bases that I have lusted for. Dining, coffee and entry tables, among others.
There are pieces of wood that it is a privilege to see.........this is one.......frankly I would not have the balls to cut something like this.......major creds
It has been so much fun working with this piece, definitely scary cutting into it though, we had ONE shot haha
It is amazing, so glad it is not left to rot into the ground
Right! GL Veneer salvaged this root system a few decades ago and have been storing it ever since
utter magic what nature provides you are soooo lucky to be handling that !!
Agree, so excited to make use of it.
Outstanding!
Thank you Brett!
Love the giant root system!! I’ve had some ideas about using a root wad for a table base. Just haven’t done them yet. This video is very inspiring and I love the sand blasting. It really woke up the grain! Can’t wait to see the finished product!!👍🏼
I have always wanted to as well, so pumped! The sand blasting process was wild to see, definitely woke up the grain!
@@MattsWoodworks was sand used or what type of medium? just curious
that tree must have been a monster. that is so cool looking.
Like every one else ,blacktail studio sent me here ,I am not disappointed 😎👍
Cam is awesome! Thank you for coming on over!!
That was a trip down memory lane. My dad spent most of his career in the office at GL, I would occasionally go with him and he would walk me through the factory.
Definitely can't wait to see the next part of this series! New sub for sure.
Thank you for coming over Billy, I'm pumped!!
The video is soooo much better than ig stories. That thing is gorgeous! Can’t wait to see more progress and what this will turn into👊🏻
Thanks brotha! That means a lot, I’m pumped for this one!🤘🏻
This is beautiful! Longtime viewer of Cam's channel, looking forward to watching you grow... :):)
Right on Mike, thank you for coming over, I have a lot of fun stuff planned for this year!
I made one from a yew root system. I put lemon juice on it and left it in the sun. The wood ended up looking like bone it was amazing. Hope the project goes well.
Oh wow that's totally interesting, I have some cut offs I definitely want to try this!! Was yours redwood as well or a different species?
@@MattsWoodworks Mine was Elm. But the effect is amazing. Try on a small piece and see how it goes. Thanks.
I'd LOVE to have a piece like that to work with!
So much fun!
Love your work. Not questioning your creative decision. Just thinking out loud on what I would do. Take all those red wood cut offs and build a epoxy table top for that root .
still have them! ;)
Nice one!
I'm here from Blacktail, good recommendation 👌🏻
Whooop! Thank you!!
It looks beautiful just sitting there .
I wish I could keep it!
@@MattsWoodworks hold your horses there young man if anyone's keeping it i commented before you ,so it would be me keeping it according to the court of comment placing order .
@@kennyk4134 hahaha touché! 😋
@@MattsWoodworks its absolutely beautiful just sitting there in all its glory .some oil finish and it would look amazing in any boardroom .
Part 2 wru? This looks absolutely amazing
That's what I am looking for too
Hey man love it I came from Cams channel. That original root piece that you got a portion of would have made an awesome bar top I wish I had these skills very cool man
totally would right! Thank you for coming over!
Loved the root! We're an ice sculpture Co and have the slicing equipment, now keeping ourselves busy during covid making tree root tables. I've shot blasted trucks in the past - lots of them so chose to blast the roots with a 4000psi turbo nozzle pressure washer since I know how much mess is made by shot blasting. It brings out the grain in the same way but is so much cleaner.
Surprised by how much our tables sell for all over the world - did yours sell at $65K?
Yes! Thanks! That is super awesome, I've always been drawn to ice sculpture, super rad!
Hey Matt! New subscriber here, was sent here by Cam from Blacktail Studio. Went through your videos and loving your work so far, especially this huge redwood root project, it looks sick. If I may offer some feedback? (These are just personal preferences! so feel free to ignore).
I find the music a bit loud and fighting you for dominance! You could also consider reducing the volume of the tool noises as well. They're not always the most pleasant to listen to, especially things like routers, when sped up.
I think another thing which viewers might enjoy is more voiceover explaining what you're doing or the reasons for your choices (instead of music) during fast-forwards or montages. For example in the poker table build, I would have loved to hear more about the design and planning process, and some steps - like the kerf bending on the bumper or filling in the metal before painting - may not have been understandable if you weren't already familiar with it.
From my experience most people will watch anything if there is a solid narrative/process to follow! Hope to see your channel grow throughout this year, best wishes for 2021.
Hi Cait! This is absolute great feedback!! Thank you, seriously! I haven't done any voice over yet, it was next on my list to try on the next video, and I will definitely take the other things into consideration, this is all super new to me so I will take the feedback and run with it, thank you my friend!
Great feedback about the volume of the music and props to you for being receptive about it. Looking forward to following your work!
This is something unique. I look forward to the second part of the video what the end result is.
Just found your channel thanks to cam, glad I actually checked it out! Amazing stuff! Wish you had more build vids though. Hows this one coming along?
I just subscribe big dog I seen your videos and now I can’t wait for the outcome of this redwood root table
Rock on, thank you!! I'm pumped for this table!
I think the best words to describe this is, Totally Gnarly ! ! ! I glad this just Part 1. I'll go from here in hopes of seeing what you actually do with it. Definitely needs lots of oil, (Tung oil maybe) to bring out all the subtle grain and color.
I love Gnarly! Thanks for sticking around, pt.2 is going to be exciting! I decided to not use ANY finish, I tested a small piece and it turns the whole think black, and super ugly!
Be -you-tiff-Full!!!
Thank you Cirstian!
hey matt, come to see you from blacktail. awesome
waiting for the Part 2
Hey Matt, that's going to an awesome work of art. Just subscribed through recommendation from Blacktail Studio. Do you have a video out on the copper work you did? Would be great to see.
Thank you for the kind words and the sub! I don't have a video on the copper, but that is definitely a great idea for one! I totally will put that in line!
Blacktail Studio sent me over. That is an incredible wood piece.
Not sure if you control this or not but I find myself constantly turning the volume up & down. The music is to loud compared to the voices.
Thanks for heading over! This whole thing is super new to me, definitely taking this into consideration on the sounds levels of music, thank you!
Must have taken a long time to get all the dirt. Looks cool!
just put glass on top and make it a table, those cutting can be made river table too. magnificent piece!
That's the plan! Getting the top level or to incorporate standoffs for support the glass is the tricky part, I don't want to cut into the top at all as it's the money side.
@@MattsWoodworks every piece of that is money, too bad we don’t have that kind of tree in Philippines.
That is incredible! Love the root movement on that.
What’s the song??
@blacktail Studios sent me here. Thanks Cam. This looks like its gunna be an awesome channel
Cam is awesome, thank you for coming over! Lots of fun stuff planned for this year!
Way cool
Thank you!
Would love to see how this sequoia nebula was nudged from the earth.
Here you go!
ruclips.net/video/KszQKceJwY4/видео.html
Matt your company and what you do looks great 👍👍👍👍👍👍 may I ask what you do with the off cuts Please
I'll make some charcuterie boards, maybe a few small art pieces!
I'm curious to know about the sandblasting, what was used, and how much psi to prevent from damaging the wood?
Not entirely sure on the psi, but I can say that it was VERY powerful. We weren't worried about damaging it due to the age and density of this piece of wood specifically
I like to guesstimate numbers, so please feel free to reject the inquiry. Curious on the pickup price...guessing 5-6s? I’ve had a 4’ diam 6” thick redwood slice I’ve been waiting to get at next stages with for a while...you know how it is! Lol thanks for reminding, and love the moon shot! Go big or go home, right?
you have to build the house around the root ball table on the second one. impossible to get in in a door.
Is that part of a much larger root system? Looks like it might be 1/4 to 1/3 of root ball.
Jesus I could only imagine having the whole root for an executive table or something like that. Waiting on part 2 to see how this turns out. Coulda also used that dense cut and turned it into wooden standoffs as well. Wood all the way through!
Right! This one will be a dining table but the big root would be spectacular as a conference table! I can still do some wood stand-offs, although my thought is to have something juxtaposed against the root. So hard! Thanks for following along Kevin!🙏🏻
@@MattsWoodworks What wound up happening with this one?
So, are you rolling the dice with your own $65000 or a clients? Either way, god speed dude. What an absolute treasure of a knot to play with. Just, wow.
Hey where is part 2??
I wonder if there is a part 2
There will be!
This deserves to have an expert wood carver like Mary May. She could easily turn this into a true masterpiece.
Carving into a piece like this would be seriously sacrilege, IMO
Do know where the root was sourced from?
It was from the northern coast, check out their YT video, it's the history behind the whole root system!
ruclips.net/video/KszQKceJwY4/видео.html
Part 1, ... Is there a sequel?
Someday I would want a buy a Root Table like that from you. Well I can't afford it yet. But I will get on maybe in year 2030. If you are still doing this then.
I would love to make you one, and I'll for sure be doing this in 2030! :)
@@MattsWoodworks Sounds great!😁👍
I don't know why I keep thinking this, But how awesome would that root be inside of an Aquarium?
Thank actually would be super cool!
It would have been nice to see what this became..table, or desk or....??
I would just encase the whole thing in epoxy amber, shine it into a polish and make it a centerpiece in the grand entrance. No need to mess with. Maybe some gold and black metal in lays to accentuate the periphery of the amber. Of course the it would cost a house for the epoxy alone.
Where is the part 2 please?
Where's your lumber yard?! I'm peanut butter and jealous.
I wish this was my lumber yard!! This is @glveneer in Hunnington Park, Ca.
Did you say , 8 x 14 ? You gotta have a big big place for this.....is it done ?
What kind of wood is that?
Redwood root system
Where is the table????
I have other big redwood roots. For sale also!!!
Where's Part 2?????
I wouldn't waste a piece of those cut offs. Right down to pens and bottle stoppers. We dont get any Redwoods in Florida.
How did you even get ??
@GL Veneer has had it for a long time! I bought it from them
Just a beautiful piece of wood.....so did it really cost $65,000
Isn’t it! Piece itself didn’t cost that much, all in commission cost
As an Artisan, I imagined a repair to the saw portions on the sides by carving into the solid parts and trying to mimic the look of the exterior by carving the inside walls to match. I myself have experiments doing just such things in plaster with great results.
where's part 2
I'm working on it! It's just super tedious working with something that's absolutely irreplaceable. Cant. Mess. Up! haha
@@MattsWoodworks sure spray a bit of lacquer over it and slap a sheet of glass on top ;)
@@johnwildwest1 on it! 😂
Wait was this 65k to buy or someone is paying you that to make a table?
I was like I wouldn't pay 65k for that, then I saw the big one and then I understood
haha, *fistpump*!
65,000 hahahaha!!
i think thats the sexiest piece of wood i've ever seen. Does that make me strange? I don't care. Drool.
haha, not at all!
I know people that would pay a fortune for that for their aquariums.
Maids/cleaners everywhere are crying, thinking about how the fuck they are going to dust this table base
Hahaha no kidding!!
65k ? more money than brains
Or what if, more brains than money eh?
Where is the damn table ? All you shown us was that 1500 years stump that you cleaned ?
It takes time working with something like this, it'll come though I promise! Also, the video title does say I was doing the milling pt.1 ;)
What ever happened with this project???
It's a long process! I'm still working on it, don't worry! Thank you for being patient!
65k just for the wood? Geeze
That was the project's total cost before shipping.
Seems like the photographer is afraid to actually show off any of the amazing beautiful details. Moves around TOO FAST! I tried freeze framing a few times but the frames blurred the images up anyway.
While I am on this track, also seems like your trying to keep your viewership as low as possible with the vile mean-spirited music. Big time wince. Oh well. If your gonna lose, lose big.
More slow mo, no mean-spirited music, don't lose, got it thank you so much!!!
i only see firewood...
who burn redwood for firewood? weird..
this would be the most gorgeouse altar in an cathedral
sacrilege
