Between the wrap around capability and the vacuum kiln the turn around time on projects is incredible. Normally that sort of crazy figure would have to stay stickered for months to stabilize and dry. These geniuses figured out how to make way more use out of figured wood beyond typical veneers and crank out stable projects way faster. Very clever. Best of luck to you on any projects.
If he had just air dried it with stickers in between the boards he would have had 37 useless boards as they would have had more waves than the Atlantic in them. Vacuum drying is the way to go as it keeps the boards flat.
Of all the videos i have watched that Matt has made with the sawmill, this had the biggest windrow of sawdust. That was a lot of cutting and the end result was beautiful.
Such a calm excitement in your voice. Like a Mr. Rogers of wood cutting
I cut with a professional saw. I have never seen such a quality cut with a narrow ribbon! You are a master of your profession
Gorgeous table, looks like you two have a great product going there. It also makes a lot more prime wood natural finishes for furniture available from fewer and fewer logs these days.
What a nice day outside. That is a great piece of wood. How nice to have some help. Your excitement is something else.
Great Video I just watched, you got talent Brother. Thanks for being you.
Awesome work 👍. Nice to see wood get put to good use.
very rare i see videos on youtube that arent overblown with music and intros and all that unnecessary BS. great video man, keep doing what you're doing.
Some of the best times of my life have been working with people like you. Your laminated construction will be more stable and last longer under variable temperatures and moisture.
You have my respect and admiration.

Matt-can’t wait to learn more from you about how you make slab skin tables! Love the idea and would love to hear your tips and tricks about how best to make them when you do a video on them. Thank you for your great channel!
Absolutely love what is being done with these thin slabs. Simply incredible how well they come together to look solid. Great job.
thank you!
Agreed. Sad to say but I am rarely impressed with a lot of live edge furniture on RUclips. Matt killed it with these. A very good compromise between looks versus weight versus utilizing as much of the wood as possible for the most furniture pieces possible!!
@@TexasUrbanSawmillLLC The only downside is that it probably costs as much if not more than an actual solid piece of wood. Considering the specialty equipment and time needed to achieve that effect.
Maybe I'm old school, but I like a solid, heavy piece of wood. The movement is just part of the game.
Totally agree 💯. Nice to see beautiful wood get put to good use.
why are these being cut so thin?
These videos are amazing. By the number of views I can see that I am not the only person with this opinion. I would love to see this as a TV program where each episode would go from cutting the tree down to a final furniture product. I guarantee this would be a big success especially given what is currently on TV.
This is my comment: Watching a person as productive as you, lifts my mood to a higher level. You make me want to be better in all I do. Thanks.
Thank you!
I really LOVE the slab skin technique the depth of the pieces are so deceiving and beautiful.
this is going to be the most awesome 70's basement paneling ever!
Mr. Matthew, As I sit here this Cold Morning by the Wood Stove trying to keep warm the Feb. morning I Turn on this Fantastic Wood Smith sawing up a log for some Future Fine wood work.. Nice that your Not Busting your Balls by having a Helper to move the Slabs as they are being Cut down off the Log Stock.. You do such FINE WORK !! Sir you are a 100% Master at your Craft !! Keep up the Good Work !! I Hope to Own a Piece of your Fine Work Some Day !! I Thank You So Very Much for sharing your Fine Craftsmanship... O and is nice to see some Nice Green Grass.. lol
This project is turning out to be pretty awesome Matt. Not a huge fan of the final product myself, but I appreciate the effort and the ability to fill a niche in the market that doesn't really have any makers in it right now.
I love the concept of using the skins and boy did that make a beautiful table. Good luck on the new venture and thanks for taking us along.
Thanks!!
Awesome proof of concept Matt, so much potential with those products.
That table is outstanding! Interesting technique that really leverages the log to go a long way when there's such worthy figure.
Absolutely awesome! Not just the sawmill or the vacuum kiln , or the plywood backing, or the miter saw wrap, etc...
Great concepts great execution congratulations Matt and Eric
I love the slab skin approach! All that beauty at a substantial weight savings! Winner, Winner! :)
Wow, the future of woodworking! Great stuff Matt congrats!
Excellent to see more efficient usage of resources like walnut and resin!
Matt, good on you for venturing forth on a new facet of working with wood. It's obviously going to open up a whole new world of possibilities for you - and us!
Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
Would be GREAT to see a vid about the stuff he makes out of these slabs!!! Also would be great to see what his drying system is.
The number of stickers needed for that many slabs. The vacuum kiln saves time and effort.
Stickers can also potentially stain the slab
LOVE the finished pieces you've done so far. What a fantastic idea and execution. I'm in total awe 😲
some real beauty in those trees, i keep watching you cut wood and never get tired of your videos. love to look at wood too
Wow that table looks amazing
@Matt ~ WOW.... The aesthetic finish on the prototypes is breathtaking! You've captured the beauty of the walnut wood perfectly. The conference table is a true work of art....I just want to keep staring at it! I am intrigued by the "Vacuum Kiln" you guys utilized for this project. How does it compare to the more traditional kilns in terms of the quality of lumber you get at completion of drying?
Gorgeous results in your "prototypes". I put that in quotes because they really look like finished pieces. I'm impressed by the productivity of this process, as well. This technique stretches that one log to to many pieces.
Beautiful wood and extrodinary woodwork too. Very nice. Glad you showed the end product.
I'm sure I'm not, alone when I say I'd really love to see a slab skin project video
I am with you on that. I would like to see a video on that process as well.
We sometimes watch your sawing videos while eating dinner. They're somehow relaxing. My wife also spends the entire time giggling at the crotch comments, like every other commenter.
I notice your water bucket skills have improved over the months. It takes just a single sweep to cover almost all the surface. Great!
Thanks for showing the end product table! That thing is amazing!
Miter-fold: good way to extend your wood supply! 😊👍
Oh man, that beautiful figure at the top of the log would look great on a guitar back, bookmatched.
Those tables (etc) look so awesome! What a great combination of solid wood and plywood!
Only super jealous people would thumbs down this wonderful work. Congratulations on your beautiful woodwork and for sharing your results. ❤️
👍 Beautiful walnut.! Nothing takes a finish like Walnut heart/sap IMO
Commercial Forest 🌳 you got that right!
Maine Terrain thanks! 🙏 😊
Maine Terrain I like what I like!

That hurts just to look at. I know these tapes can handle a little water, but still...
If anything convinced me I must be doing something right, it was this man, in this video. I started doing this a little bit ago for the same purpose. I say spread the love of good wood, even if it is a lot of extra work and stickers. I started to stretch a very lovely log for more exterior surface shown. It just makes too much sense. This isn’t basement paneling from the 70’s. 🤣
Gorgeous results!! There are some things I really love about you that are infectious for me:
Your neverending excitement about every cut and grain pattern, your enthusiasm for the craft, and all the inspiration you give me for new ways to be creative in this realm.
Your slab skin idea has already started a number of gears turning in this ole brain of mine! Can't wait to see what else you create!
Thanks Joey!
Hey Joey,
Great comment for every reader here to embrace!
my wife said if i start talking like you, crotch, loving the wood, i would be sleeping in the shop.
Bad wife
Find a more interesting woman
@@jjo5917 bin with her for 38 years to late now.
My wife has accepted my love for the wood, to the point she is allowing me to turn that into my career!
@@olddaphon you've been with her this long ( or vice versa ), there is no woman more interesting for you 😂
Slab skin does sound much better than "live edge veneer". The marketing department made a wise choice.
I think natural edge sounds even better than "live" edge because there is nothing "live" about the edge itself. ;)
personally, i prefer "live edge;" it just sounds better.
That's some seriously beautiful wood. Love the new process you two have developed. Thanks for sharing Matt.
Very very nice, so great to see a creative woodworker who implements ideas instead of a woodworker that has sponsor after sponsor...
“Serious crotch action”. Died laughing
The wife walks into the room just as Matt goes "that's serious crotch", I get the look as she turns around and walks out.
- Matt Cremona: Homewrecker
Lol I died laughing at this!!
That’s why I wear headphones! Lol
Poor Jeff
This is such an interesting technique to get the most out of the natural beauty of these slabs. My jaw dropped when I saw that table. It’s one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve seen. I can tell how proud you are of it, as you should be!
Matthew, That’s a lot of slabs from one log! But even more amazing (really amazing) are the 5 sided slabbing you two are doing! They look fantastic!
Congrats to both of you, looks like a financial return coming your way.
I would hope so! Some fat cats office wall!
4:07 Did anyone else think that log slice said “Oh, Okay”?
It most definitely did
dafukk
No its in your head lol
So so cool. I love the prototypes. And the great looking wood goes further.
That Bandsaw Mill is awesome.
Walnut is some of the hardest hardwood to mill.
You made that look easy. I want one.
Eric had to lift that entire log by himself. Twice.
Matt’s “arm”was too tired from cranking that damn reel
😂😂😂
I've been sitting here trying to figure out how you got the end grain on the hollowed out beam that you made... I need answers! Lol
Some of the slabs had end grain - the first ones since there was a limb facing up. I think he used one of those for that effect.
with the fold blade from andy you can use a razor to cut off that side and make an inlaid piece with the same dimensions and glue that in.
Look at my @epoxybyamishshowroom instragram
page for details.
I absolutely love the table. Nice job.
Great concept and prototype pieces. Haven't seen that kind of kiln setup before. Thanks for sharing
If I ever ditch my day job and start a band, at least I’ll have a name ready.
Band of Crotch Figure
I'm soooo stealing that! 🤣
He said “crotch figure”.
That is what they call the grain of wood in the crotch of a tree. Where 2 limbs grew.
He,he, beavis and butthead..;)
Great use and way to maximize the tree's natural beauty. Everyone loves that big thick slab look but nobody loves the reality of weight and cost. Can't wait to see more.
That’s beautiful and amazing, it tells a story while you show the history of the tree! You made a second life of the tree! 🤙🏻value it ask it speaks. 👌
That moaning and groaning sounds like me trying to get out of bed sometimes
That tape measure will soon develop rust. Tsk, tsk...
I thought the same, not a good way to have a working tool for long
@@sass1ap
As a screaming G.C., I'm never happy witnessing tool abuse.
tapes are cheap , and i buy a new one every few months. have done that for 40 yrs. believe it or not , the blade thickness decreases with use , and they become very floppy. long before rust kicks in
@@robertn2813 Tapes are cheap huh? I still have mine 11 years later. Fat Max, Made in USA, rule!

That one’s been out in the rain a few times
this is a great way to make 1 of a kind logs go farther and share that beauty with more folks ... very nice
For some reason I enjoy watching these videos.....
Wow that slab skin wrap is amazing. What a cool concapture. I love these. Look forward to more projects with these.
That table is fabulous. Great job.
Terrific product Matt. All the best.
A perfect use for beautiful wood. More surface for more pieces to enjoy/exhibit. Astounding look from that tree Matt. Well done
Absolutely crazy how amazing those pieces turned out.
Amazing look Matt on those sheets of Walnut...can't wait to start my mill and furniture business up top in the great live free or die state of NH
Great job one more time, I was wondering about the edge and a wonderful solution with Andrew's blade.
Love the prototypes. Superb workmanship.......
Thank you!
Wow that walnut table is gorgeous. Excited to see more slab skins. What a brilliant idea.
that wood is just beautiful. I love the looks on the new projects
All those thin slab reminded me of topographical site model at I back in the 90's for architect school. Nice work👍
Very cool Matt. Can't wait to see what you can do with this.
What a great idea! That table looks amazing!
Very cool, Matt. Thanks
Amazing!! Love the finished products!!
The wood is so beautiful. I love the pattern.
The result is mind blowing!!!
Amazing work and a great product you both have developed Matt
Beautiful finished project
Very cool to see what was done with these!
Again, me too, I can't see enough of these beautiful boards,..what furniture ( or whatever ) is going to come from these!
Obviously I wrote the above comment before I finished watching the video, so my thought's came true, quite apparently, you have reason to be proud Matthew!
Thank you!
That table is amazing, wow!!
Absolutely beautiful pieces, well done.
Fantastic. Superb woodworking.
I always enjoy your enthusiasm.
10-20 grand for the table, I'm guessing, well worth a work of art from man and nature. I'm Bicycle Bob and I approved this message.
What a great way to get the most of such a valuable resource
excellent tool, I would love to have one of these saws to use so many logs that are found. greetings and great work
Wow! Stunningly beautiful wood, and masterfully turned into equally beautiful furniture!
Too much fun, Looks great!
Those proof of concept pieces are gorgeous what a great way to get some serious mileage out of a log
Thank you!
Gorgeous pieces at the end
