  • Several of my subscribers have asked me how to specifically disable their "pop up" cleaning systems. There are a few simple ways to do this that don't involved re-plumbing your pool, depending on how your systems is set up.
    Remember, if you have a dedicated pump/motor for your in floor cleaning system (meaning it solely operates the pop ups) then you merely have to make sure that pump/motor never comes on (via the time clock etc) and you're done.
    This video is for those of you whose pop up cleaning system shares the same pump/motor with the filter of your pool.

    Very helpful. Just paused mine. Found it was not very effective and tended to make small piles of debris. Also, VS pump doesn’t run at high flow long enough. Lastly, new main drain grate regulations prevent any chance of a leaf being able to get sucked in. My robot is far more effective so far.

    Great video! Do you know if you can buy "plugs" for the the pop ups? My shelf pop ups also pop up two on the pool bottom, so I'd want to replace the two on the pool bottom during the conversion so that they don't pop up. Thanks again

      @@dhab010 i’m not sure about that. Probably doing online search and see if they exist. I’ve never looked for them anytime I’ve converted a pop-up system to a suction side vacuum we just disabled them by stopping them from cycling.

    Great video, this video and others have been very helpful for this diy pool girl. Lol. Quick question, if I’ve got my actuator paused on my steps do I also need to have my return line completely open? I think the answer is us but wanted to clarify. Thank you!!!

      Hi Megan, Yes, it's a good idea to open your return ports fully so as to allow for maximum flow to your pool. Also, for more great tools, checklists, product links and chats with me, please check out my website poolschooler.com

      I don't like robotic pool vacuums, typically they are too expensive and you have to put them in and take them out every time you want to clean your pool. I'd suggest converting your pop up system to a Suction Vacuum using a VacMate and with a Barracuda G3 Vacuum by Zodiac. Watch these two videos: ruclips.net/video/gSfbNv4sV_M/видео.htmlfeature=shared

    Previous owner ran a pvc pipe over the deck as a return- what should I ask about or do first to see if pop up’s work at all? It’s an old pool. And it’s drained.

      The only real way to determine that is to fill pool and run it and adjust the valves to see if everything's working.

    When I take the lid off my infloor cleaner water just pours out continuously, I believe it's because they installed it lower than the water level of the pool. How would I stop the water so I can work on it? I need to replace the gears...

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Год назад

      That's a bummer. Sorry to hear that. Two suggestions. 1. Go after the builder and make him/her/them make it right or you'll report them to the local municipalities and the BBB. and/or 2. You may be able to get a check valve installed on that line so that water can flow the proper way but to the other way. BUT contact a different pool repair company to do this and NOT the person/company who did the original work.

    When did they start using only 1 pump to run filtration and cleaning system? I worked for Paddock in the 80's and 90's and we always used 1 dedicated pump just for the Hydra 6 cleaning system. Pool will not clean properly splitting the water flow.

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  4 года назад

      I'm not sure but it's the norm now. I agree, doesn't make much sense to split the return flow that way.

      What I heard is that only in 1989 did Paddock Pools which installed the Paramount module, and cleaning heads as their in floor cleaning system, installed them without a dedicated pump to run their in floor cleaning system. I have only seen this on one other pool that I serviced in the past out here in Arizona.
      when I serviced pools in the LA area, before moving here, I worked on hundreds of Paddock pools there, mainly in Bel-air, Brentwood, and Beverly Hills. They were the biggest pool builder out there for a long time, but left in 1958. Imagine my surprise to find out that they left LA to focus on building pools in Arizona. It's just interesting to note the differences in pool "culture". I only saw an in floor cleaning system on two of the hundreds of pools that I had worked on in LA, and the filters are about 99 percent DE only.

    Thank you so much for all of your videos ! I am getting ready to buy a used fiberglass pool that was used for home shows. It has the holes in the bottom for the inline cleaning system and I was wondering if I could just cap those before the install? I prefer not to use them it's a very very small pool. Do you see any problems that would arise from that?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Год назад

      As long as your return water can flow freely through another pipe (ie the pool returns). But the pop up returns are the only return option then you have to make sure that one of the sections of the pop ups stays open (up) all the time

  • @CaptainKenny696

    Can you explain the pressure at the pop up actuator? Should the reading be the same as at the filter? Thanks

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Год назад +1

      It depends on how much flow you have directed to the pop-ups/actuator. If you have the majority of the return flow dedicated air pressure should be similar to that of the filter but if you have more of the return flow going just to the returns it probably won’t read the same pressure.

  • @doheredia

    The only return lines to my pool are through the in-floor popups. Could I remove the actuator all together and plumb just one or two of the popup return lines directly to the filter?

  • @blaneahm9891
    @blaneahm9891 Год назад

    Hey man, my pool setup is similar to this minus the extra valves they have for the return. So, I have a water feature, and a tiny aerator, and pop-ups. If I kill the pop-ups, how many return lines do I need to make? Would one return line be enough? My pool is about 11k gallons. My pool builder is suggesting to kill the pop-ups and run a vac line but I do not have any other returns besides the above.

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Год назад

      It really depends on how much water your pump moves. But I'd say at least 2 to 3 return lines.

    Our pool person periodically brings a vacuum even though we have a pop up system. He claims we do not or should not have to disable the pop ups. In your opinion, is this true? The vacuum does do a nice job, but we prefer to use the pop system only, which seems to do an adequate job, Also, do you service the Chandler area?

    • @PoolSchooler

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  2 года назад

      @@jpolanowski35 I would agree with your current pool person. It really is not much of a problem, about the only rare thing that might happen is a particular pop-up head comes up right as your vacuum is passing over the top of it and that could possibly but not necessarily cause it to get hung up on that head.

    This question has nothing to do with a pop up cleaner but I can't seem to find any good information on pressure gauges. I have to replace my pressure gauge every season. Is there one out there that will last more than one season?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  4 года назад +1

      It would seem like the pressure gauges the come with the pentair, Hayward and sta-rite filters my clients have seem to work pretty good and hold up well, even in the intense Arizona sun. To have to replace your pressure gauge every season does seem too often but unfortunately I don't really have any recommendations for any after market pressure gauges that could fill your requirement. Any subscriber have any suggestions?

    Our pop up system has been disables for a long time in favor of a pool cleaner vacuum. The pop ups are deteriating and cracking. I would like to remove them and plug the holes. Are there plugs available?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  2 года назад

      I have seen plugs for certain types of pop ups. Id suggest doing an online search for pop up plugs for your particular type of system. Also I’ve known some pool owners who have done a pool Re plaster and when it was done they had them fill in and seal the pop up openings. But if you do this make sure the company really knows what they’re doing.

      He explained at the beginning of the video...one reason is you might want to use a vacuum pool cleaner...probably to keep the heads from popping up and getting in the way.

    • @b0llos
      @b0llos 2 года назад

      because in my experience pool pop up systems are inefficient, costly, and use obsolete parts (heads break often being rubberized/plastic and submerged in chlorinated water doesn't help their lifecycle). most people would prefer to run a pool vacuum with hose directly into the in ground skimmer basket (underneath pool deck).
