Restoring My Dream Car! A 1965 Ford Mustang | Part 1

  • I just bought my newest project. It's a 1965 Ford Mustang, originally a C Code - 289, but converted to a 302. It's been my dream car since I was young, and I'm super thankful that I am able to take on the work of restoring it! I just wanted to introduce it to you and then start making repairs and such to get it running again. As soon as it is mechanically running and good I'll move on to the interior and then the exterior. This is going to be a super fun project that I hope you tune in for.

    Drop that old oil asap. ! And replace with zinc additive oil . valvoline racing will work . If your going to do your own bodywork , be prepared. I’t something that takes a lot of patience and most of all passion. You can find many parts for this car @ your local O’Reilly’s and NAPA . Best of luck .

    You’ve done a great job for someone who doesn’t do mechanical work for a living!! You have great intuition and were able to diagnose tough problems right away!! I’m glad you found your dream car…I found mine 52 years ago and drove it daily until Covid hit. I still have the 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback that I put over 600,000 miles on. I drive it mainly on weekends but it can still go on a long trip if needed. You will have a great time with your car once you get it where you want it. You will have many people telling you how they had one and sold it cheap and still regret it. You will find that the car is a great value since it’s easy to get parts and you seem to have much more talent than many mechanics I’ve encountered!!! Good luck with your ride and enjoy it!!! Great job!!

    Welcome to the Mustang family. I have spent the last 4.5 years getting my 67 back on the road. Good work!! These are great cars to learn on. If that is a 302 someone motor swapped it at one point. 302 were not a standard motor in Mustangs until 68. The are a bit better though. Not as prone to overheating as the 289.

    That's great that your using something to take care of the rust. I can for tell your future, replace every part of the cooling system,or after cleaning the cooling system, it may open up more leaks. 289 's have a tendency for them to over heat easily. is in your own best interest. Replace the Radiator with a 3or4 core radiator you will never stop thanking yourself with that replacement..

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the support! Yeah it's hard to say when it comes to each project, b/c they are all in different shape as far as how much work they will require. You will have to figure out how much you are willing to spend to buy your project and how much you can afford to put into it. You will need to determine how much time you have to work on a project and how much of a project you want. I would recommend finding someone in your area who really knows classic cars or is a mechanic and knows what to look for. It helps to also buy a car that is already running and driving. That's half the battle. I would also keep watching people's youtube videos, and reading forums to get a better idea of what it takes. Facebook Mustang groups are also great places to ask knowledgeable people questions and find deals on projects that people are listing for sale. Hopefully that helps, best of luck!

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching my restoration journey! Well it all depends on where you live. On the west coast, project cars tend to be a little more expensive, but usually a bit less rust b/c of the dry climate. If you're in the mid-west or the south, you can find a project car for much cheaper, although it will probably have more rust. You just have to be on the lookout for the right deal and know exactly what you want. Mine cost $5,900, then titling it in my name was another $800, and so far I've spent maybe around a $1K in parts and supplies. I've seen cars in better condition than mine go for less, you just have to be on the lookout. Took me 2 years of looking before I found the right car for me.

Early build, purchased new in December of 67. 289, automatic, power steering, Factory AC, Its been a reliable, and simple car to maintain and repair. I bought it in 1977 from the original owner. Diamond blue, 2 tone blue interior, white vinyl top. Lifelong Southern California car. So corrosion has never been an issue. Looks nearly new. It looks brand new inside, 5 years ago i had the interior completely redone with Factory correct materials and colors,, seats, carpet,, including the headliner, new dash pad, instrument cluster bezel, door panels,, arm rests, and all the interior metal repainted in correct color. The upholsterer did a fantastic job, materials purchased from California Mustang.. also he replaced the vynil top again, for the 5th time. What kind of issues have you had with your car??

    Nice, just subscribed and will be following. Just curious how much a car like this would cost as it stands.

      I picked this up for $5,900! Main thing is that it's a 302 and little rust. That's tough to find with these.

    .....you should have put body caulk around the gas tank opening .....your trunk will leak now

      I live in southern California, it rarely rains here. The car will be covered or garage kept. Are the caulk strips not what they used from the factory? I used those all around the tank.

      Yeah, I’m aware. The 66 hub caps came with the car. I’m going to swap them out eventually as I’m more partial to the 65 hub caps!

    Someone installed a generic universal ignition switch in that thing. Looks like you have 58 years of derigging to do on this project.

      Only what someone is willing to pay! I got it for $5,900. Also depends on where the car is located, there are cheaper one's in other parts of the country. I also passed on one that was in great shape at $4,300, except has some rust I didn't want to deal with. Also I was looking for something specific, like a real project to fully restore. Fully restored, probably $20K-$30K value
