As an animation student, when this anime first started my professor actually told the whole class. “If you want to be an a serious animator, you have to watch this anime.” And he was right.
Quick Fact: Future Boy Conan is a real Miyazaki TV series that inspired many animators worldwide. The creators couldn't actually get permission to use clips from Future Boy Conan, so they ended up just painstakingly traced and reanimated the clips that they used.
9:06 "Some of these shots feels like a Ghibli movie." Well "Future Boy Conan" is a real anime from 1978 directed by ... Hayao Miyazaki. No wonder it feels like a Ghibli movie.
@@hatsikujimayonez No. It was directed by Miyazaki. Takahata directed a select number of episodes of Conan, but Miyazaki directed the series as a whole.
What I love most about this first episode is that, if you pay attention to the final sequence, Midori is the one who keeps introducing conflicts to the scene. Parts of the mechanism fail, she has trouble piloting, etc. And each time she throws up a roadblock it's Mizusaki and Kanamori who blow that roadblock away. Without them she'd be just like she was at the start, throwing up roadblocks for herself about why she can't get her efforts 'off the ground.' The message is that creative efforts are rarely really a solo effort. They benefit from other people helping you blow past your roadblocks, just like everything else.
"You can tear mine out, too" - for an artist to tear something out of their sketch book like that, that's like ripping out a small part of your soul. That's the moment for me - the moment that both girls are committed, both girls recognize each other as worthy collaborators and fellow creative spirits. They're all in. I'm all in, too.
Imagine instantly connecting with someone and being able to give a portion of your soul away for them to play with it and develop it further to mutually to see yourselves flourish. It's magic.
like, even I can't allow anyone even if i know them for years to tear any of my sketches! Or I just didn't find my short gremlin artist friend till now.
The mangaka for Eizouken, Sumito Ōwara, stated via a 2020 interview (source: Livedoor) that this show is also an exploration of the troubles of being a creator with a developmental disability, most likely ADD. You can see this especially in Asakusa Midori.
A fun detail about this Anime is that everytime they learn a new animation trick/technique, that very technique is used somewhere on the episode itself
*An interesting fact* : Sumito Owara (Eizouken's creator) has adhd (or at least he described it as « *attention-deficient* , careful-deficient, caution-deficient» and that he takes meds for that). So a lot of adhd traits can be found in his characters!! especially in Mizusaki and Asakusa (who is obviously adhd-coded).
Eizoken's a great show. All I can really say for you guys who've just started it is.... relax. Enjoy the ride, let your imaginations drift and maybe learn a thing or two about how anime is made! It'll be a pleasant journey to say the least.
The true beauty of this show and this story is that it touches upon what it means to be a creator in general, not just in anime and manga. People were excited to see you react because only a fellow creator, or at least some who understands the creation process, would get the most out of Eizouken.
The anime that Midori was watching was "Conan, The Boy in Future". It is the director debut work of Hayao Miyazaki. This is Miyazaki's first masterpiece.
37:37 Aaaaaand they GET THE SHOW! Why say Kanamori is best girl when, in truth, they are ALL BEST GIRL?! Honestly I can't really decide if I like Asakusa or Kanamori more, and my feelings on Mizusaki just got more and more positive as the show went on.
FINALLY! I genuinely love this anime. Got me hooked with the MC was fangirling about Future Boy Conan. Yuasa greatness. Crossing my fingers you guys won't ignore "Great Pretender." Which is honestly another modern classic.
This anime is simply wonderful.. it was my favorite of it's season and it became an insta-classic! I actually rated it a 10/10. Probably not for everyone but it's one of the most inspiring anime I've ever seen! And the cast is simply perfect!

To think I was worried for what kind of show they would react to next now that Dr. Stone is finished. A surprise to see it's Eizouken, but a pleasant one indeed.
So glad you guys get to watch this. A not wholly unique concept but a wholly unique world done with such artfulness and inspiration! It doesn't feel like that long ago I first watched this but excited to dive back in a second time!
Oh yes! So glad you picked up this show - it's moments of greatness are amazing. While they're making anime, the universal story is the process of creating art. So. Much. Fun!
You know, in fact of Japanese anime history, where great production was born, there's always Artist/Dreamer and Businessperson/Realist, like Miyazaki and Suzuki in Studio Ghibli, like Anno and Okada in Gainax, and like Asakusa and Kanamori.
In which we have an animator, a concept artist/layout artist and the producer/production manager. I love how they have all 3 of them cause that's exactly how it is. When done by one person they must have all 3 of these qualities. The ability to imagine worlds and put cameras, the ability to act and draw people, and the ability to stay on schedule and budget. Ofc the desire to create something and tell a story. This anime just so much feels
So fun fact this anime is directed by Massaki Yuasa animated in his studio Science Saru. He directed Devilman Crybaby and Ping Pong The Animation. This is based off a manga interesting enough which started publishing in July 27 2016 and still running with 5 volumes published so far. The voice actors for the main trio are interesting choices. Midori Asakusa is voiced by Sairi Ito. She is a live action actress and this is her first anime role. Sayaka Kanamori is voiced by Mutsumi Tamura. You most likely know her for her role as Kobayashi in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Tsubame Mizusaki is voiced by Misato Matsuako. This is her first role in anything and her bio doesn't list anything else.
That depends, do you think there’s enough material in the other volumes for another season? As Eizouken currently has 6 volumes (with a few more weekly chapters for the inevitable 7th one) as of now, and the current 12 episodes adapted the first 3.
@@DixyRae Understandable, as the official English translations are at volumes 2-3 at the moment, and there are little to no attempts at fan translations of the later volumes. I could literally only find fan translations of chapters 1 to 8, minus 6 for some reason. I weirdly expected the fan translations to come a bit faster after the anime adaptation got popular.
AH YES! can't believe you guys are watching one of my most latest & recent favorite anime series. Keep your hands off the Motion Picture Club is one of my personal favorites from Masaaki Yuasa whose works within the anime Industry are just so unique and not your typical, standard type of stuff when it comes to anime in terms of visuals also animation style, art style, including storytelling. Honestly, everything about this show is just overflowing with creativity in how the girl's Imagination is actually brought to life when versioning of their fictional worlds and landscapes/characters while working on the making of an anime production progressing within the series; for real this anime means a lot to me as a fellow artist as well.
I'm so glad he said "This feels Ghibli" BEFORE the Future Boy Conan reveal. Yes, absolutely, Miyazaki is one of the primary influence for this wonderful series.
