My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
    Thanks for watching!

Much congratulations!!!! Best dog bed ever is the donut calming bed - Amazon has it. Running with the dog will be a decision down the line. Remember if it's 80 outside the pavement is probably 100 degrees. Reverse is true with the cold weather. Wishing you lots of hugs and kisses from your new family member.

Great points and also not to exercise the dog too much or for too long while their growing because that can stunt them. Short walks, runs in the first year are ok, but they should be running for 20+ minutes while too young. His vet probably went over all that. I think he’s done great research.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  2 года назад

Yeah, ultimately I'll have to wait a year to make him into my ideal running buddy but that's ok. Happy to keep the exercise small until he's ready. Great reminders all around 😊🐶

Awww! So sweet! We have two Bostons, one of which is a rescue. The first one we got as a puppy and I'm gonna be honest- I'm a mom of 4 human boys- but our puppy Boston tested me! He chewed everything in sight! Those first few months were very trying, but he really truly honestly is the bestest. And he loves to ride in the car! Our rescue came with issues, hence why he is a rescue, but he is also a fabulous Boston. Wear them out when you can and enjoy the snuggles. They do mellow with time. And they are super smart and loyal. Not much more you could ask for.

Puppy content is great, and the fact that you chose a Boston Terrier is la cerise sur le gateau. My sister-in-law had a French Bulldog, who was wonderful, but in addition to not being able to run she had lots of health problems like most of her breed.

Aaaww-so so happy for you. I am your follower and just got your PDF! You are going to love every minute of this journey. Proud owner of a Lab. I am an amateur dog trainer, so the only advise I have is train the puppy to be the dog that you and your friends will love. The time you put into the training pays off 10 times over and the first 4 months are crucial. Respect and boundaries like Cesar Millan says are the corner stones and it goes both ways. So excited!!!

It may be a little late for it, but there are heartbeat plush toys for the kennel that help pups get acclimated and comfortable sleeping through the night. I ordered it on Amazon and I gift it to all puppy parents that I know! I guess it mimics laying next to mom or a litter mate (heartbeat)! Such a good investment!… for $20! LoL

I could feel the pain at the end of this video. I was so depressed and sad for the first 2-3 months after I got my beagle puppy, Remington. At the time, I felt like getting her was a huge mistake. I read somewhere that it is called "puppy regret". It was just the sleep deprivation though. Once I got her to sleep through the night without waking up every 2 hours to go outside, it got a lot better. Obedience classes helped a lot too. Oh, and potty training - I spent so much time cleaning up pee and poop even though I was taking her out every hour. Ugh, it was horrible. Potty training took almost a year since she had a small bladder. Now she's 7 years old and I wish she was young again. One tip - don't feed him too many processed treats or foods that contain sugar. I gave Remy too many processed treats and she ended up getting diabetes at 5 and going blind. I feel so guilty even though the vet says it wasn't my fault - the vet thinks it is hereditary. Diabetes is very expensive to treat ($350/month for prescription food & meds) and being blind sucks for her since she doesn't play with her toys anymore (she still loves to go on walks though). Anyways, that's just a cautionary tale. I would hate for that to happen to your furbaby. Now I'm going to go watch the other dog video you posted last week. :)

    Puppy content is good!
Best tip I ever got from my vet when I took the new puppy for his first check was to get it to pee to command. In retrospect, I should have chosen a better cue…. ‘Do wee for Mum’ must have raised a few eyebrows on occasions. Guide dogs etc are trained to pee to a cue, which makes sense.
    Best ‘training’ I ever learned.

Definitely more puppy content! Congratulations on the new member of your family. I think whatever you commitment issues, you seem to have committed to yourself which is an important first step & needs to be in place ahead of other commitments. As to the responsibility, yes AND dogs improve our lives in so many ways. Nothig & nobody can match the absolute unconditional love of a dog. While I am all in favor of rescues (& I volunteer with a rescue) I think your well researched choice & getting a pure bred with more predictable behaviour, personality & needs is a great way to go for your first dog. I was blessed to have grown up with dogs--dachshunds & I still love them, but I became infatuated with miniature schnauzers as an adult & they are fabulous dogs. I can't wait for you to share your journey with us. Are you going to take him to puppy obedience classes? They are a great way for the two of you to learn together.

  • @karenvigmostad4013

Adorable!!! Really looking forward to learning your puppy‘s name and watching you and him grow and change.
Puppyhood is fun and exhausting. I’ve had dogs on my life and was even a professional dog groomer in my early 20s for a few years when my son was small and had a champion standard poodle who gifted me with eight boy puppies. Yikes!! But all were adorable and got great homes and several became super obedience and agility stars.
I have 4 1/2 month old and I am still sleeping on the couch near her :-) She has a crate and a small indoor pen. She came to me at 10 weeks litter-box trained - - yeah it’s a thing - - which is a blessing and a curse. She always uses it but doesn’t have a clue about grass (The material for the litter boxes actually horse food, alfalfa pellets, so doesn’t harm them if they eat it). She loves to be outside and play and run around on her long leash then comes in and does her business in her box. Sigh. But she always goes in the box.
Looks like you got puppy, gear, and the great toys, you’ll find what he likes and you’ll get more of them :) I bought four bully sticks which she chews on like crazy but isn’t dangerous like rawhide. Highly recommend the thicker ones.
Four to six months is the transition period filled with chewing and teething and running away :) patience needed and faith in adulthood to come.
My little Isla (I do great lakes island work and her name means Island and is pronounced like Island without the ND) is an angel and also a wild child. I adore her and cannot stand to be away from her for very long. She’s a Blenheim-colored Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I’ve had dogs all my life and I love this breed and you have a wonderful breed too. I had a Cavalier, Henry, for almost 13 years and had to put him down 18 months ago. So I waited like you did until I was ready for another puppy. Then I had to wait after I found a good breeder. My puppy has three generations of excellent health checks so fingers crossed. The breeder is a Merit. She’s cute as a bug super friendly darting like a bullet at any person she sees outside and wagging her bottom off. Seems to be fearless for a little 7-pound dog.

So much change for the little guy; no longer eating from his mom, away from the only family he knew. Yes, crying is completely expected. I know I would cry. Us going through the pandemic and not seeing our own families drove us all crazy, but I knew I would see them again. Why not rescue?

    • @JaySwanson

I looked at rescuing for a long time, but most of what I found were either older dogs or bigger breeds (or breeds that really wouldn't work with my lifestyle). So a combination of timing, needs, and what I could offer eventually led me to go a different route.

Congrats on the new family member! He's super cute. One of my best friends has a Bostie and they are great for city/apartment life and hiking and outdoor activities. Maybe look into Yak milk bones, her dog loves them and they last a long time because they are hard. Being a dog parent was one of the most rewarding things I ever did and you're in for a real adventure!

Congratulations on joining the Pet Parent community. I wish you and your fur baby a lifetime of love and companionship. Don't obsess over finding the right name for the little guy, because over time you will use it less and less. We agonized over our dog's name and fast forward we call him more by nicknames like mister man, pogo Joe (when he jumps up and down repeatedly) but he answers to Pal and Dude. Having a dog is a wonderful opportunity for you to try to be the person your dog thinks you are. Jay you are hitting your stride in front of our eyes, you continue to make good decisions one after another that is the secret to it all. Best of Luck.

aw, congrats! I am THE SAME about big commitments - I get negative, really apprehensive...think of all the reasons I shouldn't, etc. What I like about it is that I feel like I then have fewer surprises and more fully bask in the positive once the decision is made. Also, what a great breed to settle on!

Congrats on your new little doggo, Jay! Few things more satisfying than coming home to a wiggle butt. ;-) First few weeks are usually the most challenging for you both, but the sacrifices (lack of sleep and mopping up the piddle accidents) are well worth it. I can smell his sweet little puppy belly smell from here. Ahhhhh! Oh, and enjoy walking him in Paris and hearing random strangers smile and say "Awwwwwwwwe! He's so cute!!!! Can I/we pet him?" Puppies are the ultimate ice breaker among strangers.

Boston Terrier!! An excellent choice! (Truth be told I have one, but I am sorry to say that he is at the other end of his wonderful life - he's 15 with an assortment of age related ailments.🥺) He's a big boy, 35lbs with ears that are on occassion, floppy. I wish you much joy with your new pup! My boys name is Hobbes, which is a fine name for a distunguished gent.

Amazing Jay, I’m so happy for you! I do hope we get regular RUclips puppy content. I remember back to our first puppy ( a rescue) and an American friend taught me how to care for dogs and with the toileting how to tell the dog to ‘go potty’ when I took her out for a wee, so both my dogs sound like they have an American owner 😂😂😂 but I have added on an Anglisized extra to the ‘go potty, do a wee wee ( or poo poo) ‘ but they can certainly do it or command now, they even go and sit by the door or scratch the door if they want to go out We have one of each with a years difference in age. As a coincidence, my American friend, always said her favourite dog was her Boston terrier!

He's SO STINKIN' CUTE!!!! I remember those first nights of the puppy cries and the guilt I felt leaving my puppy (I was 13 when we got our black lab, Josie) in the kitchen. But eventually, we all got used to each other and life was good. We went through lots of paper towels. 🤣🤣🤣 I'm really happy for you. He's going to be a JOY!!!! Can't wait to know his name. . . . We'll need more stickers for the collection. 😉

Did you know that in France one can buy Doogie Healthcare via insurance? The best investment ever, I had a Boxer that was basically healthy, except for ear issues all his life, my monthly payment was at least 5X to 10X matched to every visit to the Veterinarian, lab work, and medicine. It was in the late '90' but I seem to remember the monthly cotisation was about 55€ (Francs back then), while various ear incidents cost 200-500€ multiple times a year. The insurance coverage was greatly in excess to the yearly cost.

The best advice for puppies is get a clock that ticks and out it in with him with a shirt that smells like you. Helps them sleep like a baby.
