Thanks for this video! I've been wanting a good instructional video from either you or Pascal Briand on starts for a while ^_^ My start of choice has been the hockey start, but I think I will have to give the 3rd start a try because often times I have a difficult time in races when there are more than 4 skaters on the starting line. I've fallen a couple times from my skate getting caught on another skater's skate so that 3rd start could be helpful for me. I do really like the little boost you get from springing off the front leg with the hockey start, though.

Hi Viktor, thank you for this video.
I actually do speed slalom, maybe you know it ?
In my sport, many skaters use a face start, but they push with the front leg at the start, with a very wide start position.
I personally use and like this start more than others, as we have a really short space to create speed ( 12 meters only), i feel like it allows me to build speed from the very first step.
What is yout opinion on it ?
    Greeting from france.

1:34 - Viktor started by lifting his front skate and stepping forward with it, I've been taught to push off your back skate and step over with your back skate first... opinions?

It really is individual from one skater to another. To some certain movement patterns seem more natural, and they’ll be able to generate speed faster and more efficiently than others in one position, whereas other skaters might feel that they are more efficient in a different position.

I assume your coach meant to say that you must be in a somewhat stable position once you're called to the line. If so, he's right :)

There is one thing that has been bugging me for a while: why would sprinters lift the front leg at the start? I mean it requires a massive effort, and you lose half the push for the first stride, don't you?? I mean, you will never see a sprint runner lift his front foot first!
