I am a white woman . i play Djembe with an African dance and music group . Oh my God this is incredible, i love to one day play half as good as these woman , Ballet African and may great dancer 's musicians come out of Guinee love this !!!
Whenever I think about African drummers I always thought it was male drummers. I have now been enlightened and educated. These women drummers are fantastic!!
I purchased a Djembe drum for my grandson, recently. I don't know why i had to. But after listening to these beautiful sisters playing i am so glad that i did. I am loving this video. There is something that touches my soul when they play. Love it, Love it, Love it
This is what I call DRUMMING! I'm on my second year of learning how to play the djembe plus the conga and other hand percussion instruments and I'd love to get close to these women. We'll see...Thanks for posting, LOVE IT!!!
I agree with the first person who replied....you likely felt the pain of our female ancestors that were never granted the joy of being drummers in many areas of Africa, even still to this day. Maybe you also feel their astonishment and awe that is is now appreciated in some areas.
I have watched this video over two dozen times.I always tear up. Such passion, such soul, such rhythm, such energy, such expression, such art, such love!!! Damn brought them 'dead skins' on the drums to life!! WOW!!!
What a rare video! I am an Indian drummer and love Djembe percussions! This truly reflects the spirit of music where men and women express their inner beings through it...like the universe itself does!!-Regards!
Seku Ture, Kwame Nkrumah, Miriam Makebe, and all the sons and daughters of Africa and the African diaspora thank you for your wonderful contribution to African culture and its Realities. Seku
These women are amazing. I think this is the first time that I've ever seen African women play the Djembe and it's so beautifully powerful. Thank you for sharing this video.
i love u , and agree with ur comment , the drums are similar the the heart beats thats why we feel relaxation hearing the drums beats, i am really facinated with african drums and african culture
This speaks to the full-range of the human soul. Powerful, black, african women - I have never been so impressed and humbled. Riddims well and truly in the pocket - that goes without saying. Woman coming into view at 2:40 is incredible...just ashame about the philistine tourists poking money at them and ruining the flow.
Dear Hervinbalfour, thank you for your comments. Believe me, I claim no deep knowledge of African music, instruments, or the cultural history behind their varied forms. I just happened upon that specific video while surfing music videos on youtube one evening and was impressed by the female drummers (not knowing the cultural traditions connected to the Djembe drums). Again thanks for spreading your knowledge.
BEAUTIFUL SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL! Whenever I hear this beating on the drums from REAL AFRICAN DRUMMERS, IT reminds me of MY GRANNIE CALLING ME FROM A DISTANCE! FEELS LIKE MY ANCESTORS CALLING ME TO COME HOME! A LOVELY SOUND TO ME♡
Enrico Sanna I think she was disgusted by white folks doing that, not the practice itself. It's in the nature of white people to want to intrude in other peoples' traditions and ceremonies.
+mano a mano People mean well, be White or whatever. The audience you see are probably tourists. You can imagine how mesmerized they are, and if they feel they can be part of it even in a small way, they will not shy away. It is human nature. The drummers make as decent a living as possible pursuing their love and keeping the heritage alive. It is a win win situation. In any case, this is not one of the instances to berate white people for. BTW whites are not a monolithic block any more than blacks are. I would not paint with a wide brush.
wow! Drummers...Africian drummers, Africian-style drummers, djembe players, djun djun players Unite!! This is pure Guinea, West Africa drum music...Great revolving solos from all the front players!! Nice work chicagodjembeproject...and thanks! Now what count is that second rhythm...it's a bit more complex than my knowledge; possibly a polyrhythm of 12/8???
this women are amazing. i love this jembefolas, they are teaching me a lot about woman and the nature of this fantastic creature. i think Famoudu, Keita, Bangoura and whoever else should take off their hats and say "thank you, mamas". To make a long story shirt - I LOVE THIS VIDEO :)
you are right im an african drummer and it is traditional for drummers to have money stuffed in their drum straps or thrown on stage while they're performing often this is how they get paid for their performance the better the music the more money is thrown.
I've just started palying the djembe and WOW do I have some work to do! and yes, there is a something about a womans touch....More women to the drums!!! Great video!
yes to your comments on technique and skill - and it's terrific exercise, too. I am in far better physical shape than I was a few months ago, when I first started taking lessons and studying this music. It's not about bulky muscles, it's about stamina and overall conditioning. This is a wonderful "side" benefit to the music/dance itself.
Incredible. Takes the mind on a journey! That's so good it's just plain scary. This seldom happens when I watch a youtube vid, but I WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN! Already!
Fantastic...........couldn't understand why people were approaching them while performing, then realized they were placing tips into their costumes. Amazing skills...I had it turned way up to freak out the neighbors.
Wow! Splendid! Regular rebels. Men discourage them from playing the drums- but theise are great players. There's an American Black woman , Ubaka Hill- that plays the djembe. She's a strong player-also plays other drums.
It's amazing how many of these native drummers are on You Tube. Equally amazing is the fact that they all sound virtually the same. I can only figure that it takes very little talent to do that.
I am a white woman .

Are you still drumming, Gina?
When I watched this, I cried for some reason...
Ase'. You cried because you felt the ancestors.
It happens to me too
I agree with the first person who replied....you likely felt the pain of our female ancestors that were never granted the joy of being drummers in many areas of Africa, even still to this day. Maybe you also feel their astonishment and awe that is is now appreciated in some areas.

i read a comment about women not even being allowed to play djembe...
even in ancient african history traditions have been changed
this is beautiful.
Finally! A tape of African dancing or drumming on RUclips that doesn't have white people in it.
mano a mano I found it very repulsive to see them go up and place money on them! It's annoying to see them enter the picture!
Enrico Sanna
