They had the views and the international fanbase, which lead them to won rookie of the year but in 2017 actually Weki Meki and WJSN's album charted better than the both songs of Pristin. Their debut was succesfull, only being surpassed by Weki Meki album (talking about rookies). But their comeback was flop. I really don't why. Thier debut song had 44k copies aprox. But their comeback only 21k copies. And the thing got worse with Kyla issue. Saying they were doing so well it's actually wrong. Weki Meki debut album over 60k copies. See the difference. Internationally they were the best charting female rookie of 2017. But in Korea WJSN and Weki Meki charted better.

    • @jisooable

Pristin wasn't doing as well on sales, they were decreasing in every comeback. I still think Pledis should have stuck with them and tried to salvage the group, as they did have a fanbase and were known amongst a lot of people. But I understand why they did disband :(

During a Liev, Woozi was talking about his High School days and how he had classmates that were also trainees from other companies. He said they would usually talk about how their companies treated and trained them, and he said "It made me realize that compared to the other companies, Pledis was..." DK interrupted him and said "An evil company" everyone started laughing and other members did their best to deny what DK said, Woozi just said that Pledis was a really strict and hard company. Why don't you understand that an investor is not like a new owner? 😂 I've seen a lot of comments mentioning that BH will handle Pledis artists better or that BH will do this or that. This is not how external investment works. BH labels is an investor. It means that they will receive part of the profits from Pledis, but they will not replace any Pledis workers, much less will they have the power to manage Pledis artists.
It is as if you are a designer and started a clothing business, but you need an investor to start selling on a bigger scale. Someone decides to give you an amount of money for a certain amount of shares in your company. Obviously you have to pay him with a portion of the profits, but it doesn't mean that that investor can start to change your designs.

Big Hit is like a financial partner, the only thing that they help Pledis with is promotions to get closer to the global market (as you can see Seventeen finally made their official US debut on the Late Late show with James Corden, 6 years after their debut).
Big Hit made an acquisition, that's true, but is more like an investment.

If pledis had better managerial sense & fairness seventeen would have got all the exposure and budget they EARN & DESERVE.
This acquisition pours mostly into Bighit's interest, they bought seventeen in a very critical time just before their IPO..
They acquired the 2nd best selling group for more good market impression, stability & increased stocks.
Bighit takes out a big fat chunk of seventeen's profits & paychecks too.

Let's not forget how Pledis started taking random statements that Lizzy made out of context to make her look bad after she called them out. And that's not the only time they've treated Lizzy badly. Back when she released her solo single "Not an easy girl", she found out that she owed Pledis money when she got her "paycheck", but that's because they had almost gone bankrupt at that time, so Lizzy was basically a victim of their mistakes. They also didn't defend her when netizens shamed her for her weight (sounds familiar), calling her a skeleton or saying that she looks like a walking corpse.
Raina's solo career wasn't nice either. Pledis didn't promote her activities and just left her like they did to After School IN THE MIDDLE OF HER PROMOTIONS, so they were cut short. Raina's participating on a show called Miss Back now because she wants her career back, hope it goes well because she's so talented and Pledis did her really dirty.

No one does it right, but there is definitely "lesser evil" compared to Pledis. If one of my family members or friends really desperately wanted to go to a Kpop company, I would reluctantly recommend SM (SM's major problem is having a dysfunctional legal team that can't defend their artists properly when they're under defamation attacks - as well as overworking their artists which is not unusual because Korea doesn't have very strong worker's protection laws to begin with) or many other smaller companies, but definitely not Pledis, YG or Cube.
These three companies are just complete trash and a complete waste of talents.
JYP is also very trash in my opinion. I still can't get over how they pressured Momo into eating only ice cubes for weeks so that she could lose "enough" weight for the debut. Freaking inhumane.

I'm an After School stan, still listen to their music, and I just want to add some meat to the AS section.
When Uee (pronounced Yu-ee) was added to the group, she blew up. She was everywhere. I firmly believe that's the reason why BOY gave them their only win on music shows because Uee was THE it girl of the time. In contrast, there were a lot of targeted hate towards Uee and subsequently AS because she was so popular. People photoshopped her into porn to ruin her career, AS was labelled the second worst vocal group of KPOP specifically mentioning Uee and Nana. I think that impacted AS's overall fame. Also, Uee did a lot of solo activities, even missing on most of the Bang! promotions. Her fame was used to promote herself a little bit more than AS, so AS was often left in the shadows. I also think Shampoo is like a stain on their discography, every time they came back as soft (Shampoo and Lady Luck in JP) it NEVER charted well and then Kahi and Bekah left so a lot of the heart and soul of AS was gone and when Jung Ah left it was a done deal. First Love was super close to a Inkigayo win but Sistar moved their comeback a week early, which I believe due to the fact that Sistar was advertising this "ring" dance and AS was advertising the pole and they wanted to be first as to not get compared (some members even commented that they were worried it would be similar), and Sistar won that week over AS who came in second. Still a little salty but whatever lmao
They also went to JP because they got an A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. record deal at the time with Avex, which is a JP record company that usually only signed SM artists. I remember thinking that this would be great for their career and it was because they sold more in Japan than in Korea and went on their only tour because of JP. I remember staying up till like 4am to watch their livestream for their first JP concert, its one of my fondest memories of them. They were seeing a lot of fame in JP that they had lost in Korea, so I understood why they focused on that instead. My biggest issue with the JP comebacks were the stupid ass chipmunk voices they made Kahi and Lizzy do for the raps. We know they both can rap better than that. It was so frustrating.
That being said, my girls stay making history with their comebacks and their trend setting. They were the ONLY girl group to debut women close to their 30s and show these young bitches how its done. They were the ONLY girl group to bring these different concepts to their comebacks that required talent and wasn't just a gimmick. I'm extremely proud of them and it saddens me that they were a victim of circumstance and poor management because they had the potential to make it really big.

The pole dancing made the day for them. It was a huge investment the company never refunded because they lacked the mutizens and awards they should had recieved for it. But before that, there were too many mishaps already, Han Sung-Soo has always been a fan of copying Japanese companies' ideas, but he could, as well, learnt what works and what doesn't for a group you want to base on an admissions and graduations concept, as well as put more effort on promoting. Most times Pledis barely lasted a month promoting a song (with any act), when the norm used to be to stay the longer you can last to gain some profit back. Also, the pushed-back Japanese debut affected a lot their schedule as much as it did they mishandle of Bekah, who should had never felt that way to leave twice. And years later they just did the same thing with Kyla!

    • @MERDADEGPLUS
      @MERDADEGPLUS 3 года назад +12

Also, their record deal with avex was good at the time, but as years went by, it was obvious they got stuck in a niche market that, while it made them money & granted them tours, it wasn't enough, the same it isn't for most Japanese female vocal & dance groups that always end up disbanding, idol or not, unless they succeed to crossover and be in TV all the time (and not because the company pushes for them to be) & release singles continuosly and do, at least, Arena Tours.
When AS promoted in Japan, they didn't even had that much staff following around (from avex and, allegedly, none from Pledis) & had to go the cheap way most of the time. Althought not as mistreated like NU'EST were by Ariola, and always provided decent releases (even the worst AS JP release is still better than most crap KPop acts get when promoting there, including SNSD) with fair enough decent Japanese verses (which is also an issue with KPop acts promoting there). But the promotions in Japan always took time away from possible promotions in their local market, and then there was also that crazy Chinese deal with Yuehua that ended so badly and with all Pledis' acts being blacklisted.

I too pretty much stopped listening to them after Sleep Talking came out. I thought Hello was pretty good, but not what I expected from them, but then Sleep walking was just not it. It's not a bad song, but I don't know how they thought that people who were fans of them because of Face would like that cb, it just didn't work. I did like Overcome, but aside from that I almost completely forgot about their existence since they weren’t promoted properly until prd101. I will forever be the most impressed by "First Love" because learning pole dancing takes INCREDIBLE determination, practice and skill. You're practically training every muscle in your body to keep you balanced and moving on the pole, and graciously and beautifully at that! It's one of my favourite forms of dancing for that very reason.
I wanna learn it myself once I build enough confidence lolol

These artists worked really really really hard just to be on top because Pledis sucks. Their hard work does not deserve to be putted away just because a well known company decided to adopt them ☹

    • @ashonline77

They were already big and doing well imo but i kinda understand where some people come from in the sense that bighit acquiring them did put them on the radar of people who weren't already part of the same audience. Bighit already has a big audience that doesn't overlap with the audience pledis artists had. so bighit acquiring them will only help get more people interested even if all the people who follow bighit doesnt automatically become fans, it still creates that opportunity which is a good thing. fuck anyone who says they are popular ONLY because of that, but it's not a bad thing to say that they will become BIGGER because of it. they were big and they would have became bigger even without bighit, but bighit will definitely accelerate that process.

such a shame that the groups under Pledis are very talented yet Pledis just wasted them. they cannot even treat their current artists well. SEVENTEEN remained in the industry because they do all the works by themselves and if not, maybe pledis ruined their career too. i was actually happy that Pledis got acquired by BigHit, not because my ult group is under BigHit but because we can't deny the fact that in terms of handling artists, BigHit is much more better. yes, their main goal was in terms of profit (all companies are), but if u're under BigHit u'll have much more opportunities. they deserve to be promoted more globally. maybe SEVENTEEN's situation right now is still isn't that good for them since BigHit gets profit from them too aside from Pledis but i hope in the future, as they will be promoted more and expose in global music industry, they will be more successfull and they will earn more. tho Pledis is still an independent company, i do believe that BigHit has still a say on the artists under them.
i also like when Bang-pd praised SEVENTEEN on their last global conference. like Pledis CEO cannot geez

Why don't you understand that an investor is not the owner? 😂 I've seen a lot of comments mentioning that BH will handle Pledis artists better or that BH will do this or that. This is not how external investment works. BH labels is an investor. It means that they will receive part of the profits from Pledis, but they will not replace any Pledis workers, much less will they have the power to manage Pledis artists. Although, being majority shareholders, BH labes have the ability to reject projects that Pledis proposes.
It is as if you are a designer and started a clothing business, but you need an investor to start selling on a bigger scale. Someone decides to give you an amount of money for a certain amount of shares in your company. Obviously you have to pay him with a portion of the profits. It doesn't mean that the investor can start to change your designs, but has a voice in all the projects that are proposed.

    Info on Son Dambi
She actually debuted in 2007 with Cry Eye, great song and got a but of attention. She then released Bad Boy which featured Kahi, who would go on to debut in After School.
She had her break out hit with Crazy, her 3rd released in Sept. 2008. The song and chair dance went viral.
Then in 2009 she had another huge hit with retro inspired Saturday Night. She helped build up the company and make money for After Schools debut. She also got popular from her time on variety show We Got Married, as a fake couple with Marco. She had a few more comebacks such as Queen in 2010, but never had the same huge success as with Crazy and Saturday Night. After Queen she didn't release anything until 2012. Some suspect she want supported by Pledis after Queen didn't do well and they focused on other, younger artists ( she was 27 when she released Queen)
She did however, move into acting and noticabley lost tons of weight. She started focusing on acting and had one last single Red Candle, in 2013 before leaving Pledis at the end of her contract and moving into acting full time. She most recently had a supporting role in When The Camelia Blooms.
There tons of info on her wiki.

Within the span of two years 6 of the 10 girls who ALL had trained years (for Siyeon half her life literally) went from Rookies of the Year to (in Roa/Minkyung's words) to not wanting to be idols anymore. i dont know if this is widely known but fromis stans ALWAYS knew that OTR was just pledis on disguise thats why they were traineed there and the reason why they were transfered to Pledis when OTR closed, Izone traineed under them for the same reason and they were actually managed by them at the start of their career, the same time when Pristin were only rookies pulling a blackpink level hiatus, they probably get rid of pristin and izone was heavily promoted bc izone obviously would make more money + pristin shouldnt get comebacks so they wouldnt add to the competition izone had at the time, even pledis planned a girlgroup with koeun, heo yunjin (pd48 pledis trainees) and the former idol school contestants including natty (all of them under OTR) even kep1er mashiro joined pledis for a while and was rumored to be on that line up. with all of this, wouldnt be surprising if pledis allowed mnet to rig out koeun on purpose and its obvius that OTR was just pledis with a wig
