- The Amtrak station in Birmingham, Alabama is scheduled to be replaced with a new building in 2017. This is a look at the old station just months before it's scheduled to be replaced. This station uses the remnants of Birmingham's L&N station. L&N operated a station separate from the other railroads that used Terminal Station in Birmingham. Due to construction blocking the old entrance passengers now enter the station from a new temporary entrance.
There was an L&N building in front of this, built in 1960, which was demolished several years earlier. It featured a tile mosaic that had stylized representations of the Civil War steam locomotive The General. Being Birmingham the mosaic was vandalized.
Birmingham and Alexandria are the only 2 stations on the Crescent that aren't on the NS mainline. its odd.
So you can just sit on the platform all day and watch trains?
I was railfanning there on friday
An atrocious looking place.
