Removing an Xbox clock capacitor

  • Just a quick, no-frills video of a simple mod that all original Xbox owners should do. These capacitors all fail over time, and can cause irreversible damage to your system. Most people don't replace them (only a few, very specific late-production models need it to function properly), and simply use the system without clock functionality, which is what I'm doing here.
*EDIT TO ADD: Okay, after some Googling, the white stuff all over the power supply is apparently normal-- it's some kind of insulating goop that keeps components in place and keeps them from rattling around. Still think there's some corrosion on one or two of the components there, but it might be okay for now at least.

I will have to crack my XBoxes open and take a look. I have heard if the clock capacitor is a gold one, don't take it out. That is a high quality capacitor. You mainly worry about the black ones.

@krathoon2338 This is true, those are from a later revision model (version 1.6) with a better capacitor. However, some people are now suggesting replacing those (I believe that model requires the capacitor for the console to function so you can't just remove it and go), simply because all models of original Xbox are pushing 20+ years. But they're much less likely to malfunction than all prior models with black caps

Some Xbox motherboards are repairable . It depends on how much damage the battery did .
