This lecture on the Declaration of Independence was designed specifically to help students who are reviewing for the South Carolina US History EOC (End of Course) exam but it has something to offer lifelong learners and other interested parties, as well. The Declaration of Independence was signed fifteen months after the Battles of Lexington and Concord. It took many colonists over a year to come around to believing that revolution was inevitable and that it was no use trying to reason any further with Parliament or the British Crown. The Declaration of Independence employs the ideas of John Locke, appealing to natural law and chronicling the "long train of abuses" that Jefferson lays at the feet of George III. After formally declaring independence, the United States were together able to make a full commitment to the American Revolution and were able to able to appeal to France and other nations for military and economic assistance.
The Declaration of Independence has become one of the most influential documents in history, with its language being employed in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, the Texas Declaration of Independence, the Seneca Falls Declaration, and the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence.
This lecture is part of my EOC Review series and specifically addresses content found in USHC 1.3.

I am a African American of mixed race heritage who recently took a DNA test and the results were very interesting... it said my ancestry is from "early" Virginia pre-1776 (Northern area). It also shows our migration to "early" Kentucky territory to Richmond Kentucky then into Southern Ohio & Richmond Indiana. I have followed up with this and discovered my family are DNA descendants of a person who is among the original signatures of the July 4th 1776 Declaration of Independence.

I really like your videos, Tom. I especially like John Locke who has been my favourite political philosopher since I attended university.

Hey Tom Richey, I love your videos! I crammed watching them the day before the AP European History exam. Although I am fully convinced that I received a 1 on the exam, it is great how you make educational videos for everyone! Keep it up!

    Hey Tom,
Have you made videos or are you planning to make videos on Dutch history? 'Het Plakkaat van Verlatinghe' or the Act of Abjuration of 1581 was the Dutch version of the Declaration of Independence was our ( I'm Dutch btw) founding document to declare independence from the Spanish.

Please make a video about the Dutch declaration of independence.

Ya know Tom, I don't mind learning from you. This is actually interesting :)
I wish I could say the same about other subjects though. History is different you know? It's nice and for me I can learn it a slower pace unlike Algebra 2.
Anyways I hope everything is going good on your end.
    Please be well :)

Hey Tom, I'm subbed since your video on the Stadthouders, btw at the end you said you'd like to post some more videos on the history of the Dutch Republic. Are you still planning on making those, as a huge Dutch history buff I'd love those.
Also at the end of your video you list several documents that have "copied" the declaration, however the US Declaration of Independence itself has been a similar work regarding the Dutch "Declaration of Independence" ( The Plakkaat van Verlatinghe)

+The Reaper Yes, I definitely plan to post some more lectures about Dutch history, art, and politics. Video production this year wasn't as prolific as I would have liked because I was building and launching an app for students, but I am hoping to have a productive summer. A few videos I have in mind for future release:
      1. The Orangists vs the States
      2. Dutch Golden Age Art
      3. The Wars of Louis XIV
      4. The Trial of Geert Wilders

+Tom Richey Good to hear those are still on schedule and those subjects are some interesting points in history with WIlders' trial being a good example of 'european' form of freedom of speech. Looking forward to them ;)

The Colonies really saw themselves as English, they didn't want to break away from England. This can been seen with the talks Washington had with the king during the war. Washington didn't want to go to war. Not only were the people divded, so where the Founding Fathers. Lots of heated arguments.
After we had made up our minds, thanks to Thomas Paine, in 1783 we finally became a country after the King signed the papers saying we were our own independent country.
We officially came a country in 1783.
    1776 we declare our Independence.
Declaring Independence and being granted Independence are two different things.

I know why the Franch gave aid to the Colonies. They REALLY hated the English, also we had NO money during the war, because the Continental Congress didn't tax the people. Franklin always had an American shopping list, because we needed supplies of everything imaginable. No joke.

+Jacob99 First off, there's a rumor that I never sleep. I will let the internet continue to debate the merits of that rumor. Secondly, since my RUclips videos tend to be over a GB, it typically takes around two hours for a video to upload and process. I can finish editing a video about 1 AM and then start the uploading process and go to bed and then the video posts around 3 AM.

one thing I found interesting is how The decleration of Independence is a big deal. but probably no-one here knows where it originates from and where it is based on.

The Declaration of Independence was made after the Dutch version ( plakkaat van Verlatinghe ) almost 200 years later.
