Hi John, Well you have done it now simple backscenes will never be the same again 3 D will now be the only way to go for the proper modelers, I am so happy that is not me there are some advantages in having a train set, but very well done for this slice of brilliance and I am sure when we see it on YT we do not get the full experience that you get there so I am afraid you are going to have to invite all 1700 subscribers over to yours so we can see it. Cheers Robert.
Lol, thanks Robert you are welcome any time. There are so many ways to make backscenes and I shall still be using the bought ones in different areas of the layout, but this one being made from Google maps didnt look right, so desperately needed work.
The work on the back scene makes a huge difference and really adds something both to the back scene and the buildings in front. I'll be interested to see how the other sections progress. Stephen
Thanks Stephen. I am going to complete the station entrance, the tower and the concourse roof. However the backscene along the side of the station will have to wait I’m afraid due to the restructuring in the extension later this year.
Your obviously a really talented guy, and you made that look really easy, i would love a backscene like that on my layout, very well done indeed, i'm sure that art is a gift given to certain individuals and not something that can be learnt, i may be wrong but that looks amazing! Well done John.
Thanks Phil Im glad you liked it. May I suggest give it a go. The most common mistake I see, inc kids at school is they do sky too dark. If you use mostly white and tiny bit of cobalt blue, then put blue/ black mix next to white areas you can do this. Loads of videos on sky painting on YT. Why not give it a go, so much cheaper than buying one with satisfaction ‘I did that’. Hoping that helps.
Fantastic Andy, yes you should give it a go. Besides my one here, there are loads of sky painting videos with varying types of sky and cloud structures if you want to research more. I would love to see what you achieve.
Hi John. Excellent artwork on the sky, it really does look good. Funny enough I've been thinking about the background on the town scene I'm working on as the country scene just will not look right at all. I was then thinking of looking for a background that was a town scene and I am so so glad you did this video because its given me great ideas! Absolutely brilliant John and thanks for sharing as always. All the best, Lee
Thanks, I’m so glad to have inspired you. A back scene can be whatever you want it to be. Loads on the market, but none perhaps perfect to suit all our needs. I do have a sky backscene but frankly the clouds are too big for N, so I’ll use that on OO layout.... eventually...
Looks a whole lot better, must admit you are doing such a great job of not only doing the things that make it look so good but making us understand it too....thanks for sharing....Jack 👍keep up the good work, we are enjoying it so much, I'm doing mostly desert area and now I'm thinking how to add the demention to it too, thanks...
Hi Jack thank you for your kind words. With you desert scene I would find suitable images to guide you. However, generally a scene will get paler and lose its colour (becoming bluer) as it goes further away. Up close colours are richer. If you have hills or mountains in the distance, those closer could be a slightly brighter colour and those further more grey blue as suggested above. Hoping that’s helpful.
Hi Geoff, thank you for your kind words. Although I did advance the video quite a lot, to stop people getting bored, I showed the varying steps you’d go through. I personally think it was easy, and with practise I feel anyone could achieve similar results. I would encourage everyone to have a go, nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that. The satisfaction of creating your own immense.
The perspective you have added is incredible. With all the artists tricks your using by any chance are you an art teacher? The whole backscene looks brilliant, even better than before. Alex
The 3 d effect will enhance the layout and again John you really do push the detailing on the gauge ..I could not work at this size now so i am over joyed when you succeed .Great clip and again learning from you .....
John that was a great tutorial and those clouds are excellent !!! On my station side backscene the arches will be the foreground , pushed out 30mm with paving near the top and then shops on 1mm card giving the impression of a street I am now thinking if the shops might need to be a little thicker. And then do I need something behind that to give the 3rd layer. The paving from SMC comes tomorrow and I will have a play around. But once again John an excellent piece of work . PS - I have voted ………...…..Cheers Kev
Thanks Kev. Sounds Like you have the right idea, but personally I would make the shops thicker, probably similar to what I did with the train crew building on the right of my backscene. I would go 10mm with another town scene pic behind that, to give the depth. Some buildings will be taller, ie flats, office towers, churches etc. My idea is to give the feeling that the scene goes on for miles rather than stop at the edge of the board. Hope that helps.. Thanks for your vote much appreciated. I might keep that poll going for few weeks. It’s my first outing with ‘youtube cards’ lol.
Hi John the pavement strips arrived today and there is room to bring the shops out 10mm and it does look more realistic. For the town Scene behind it I was going to mount it on card to bring it out a touch but should I print it at OO scale or reduce it to give a sense of distance? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Thanks again Kev
Great work John. One thing did strike me was you are hiding one of the iconic buildings on London Road - the old fire station especially the tower - behind the canopies when it might make an interesting feature beside the canopies and beyond platforms 13/14.
Love your work and it does look a lot better, Mayfield station could you make a piece which joins on to your layout to make it look like it does go into the old station as when you look on Google maps it is connected ....I had a couple of weeks off not been so good .. I had a nasal operation 2 weeks ago and made me feel horrble prob be another 2 weeks before I do much... John
Sorry to hear youve not been well, hope things are improving for you. Remind me about the Mayfield station bit during the extension as there MAY be room we’ll see. Not possible right now due ti the track angles
Wow John, it has made a total difference to your station area. Just a small question is do you teach art/drawing/painting at your school Great video too. Kevin
@@piccadillymodelrailways If you can send me your email I would rather ask more detail about your teaching if you are able. You can get to me in New Zealand at khainessf@gmail.com - Kevin
Please don’t forget to check the ‘i’ to right hand corner, there is a question there I’d like to know what you think.
Love the techniques you use. Free art lessons for us not so arty people. Between you and Paul Apps we will all get better. Nice work.
Ahhhh thanks, Paul is a fantastic artist, and great tutor. So glad you enjoyed the video.
Hello John, that’s a improvement. The perspective is better now. The sky/clouds you painted are very realistic. Great job.
Thanks Norman, the backscene as it was as ooooo kkkkk, but crying out for improvement.
beautiful backscene... a million times better..( and it's not finished )... all the best ...Neil
John wow... your an incredible modeller. Well done 👍
Hi John , That backscene does look Very Good , ( Forced perspective ) And an Idea that works very well .
Great work John, looks the biz...cheers, Chris
Hi John what a great video very well done great job on improving the backscene and an amazing job on painting the sky scene.
Thank you Giles I am so hlad you enjoyed it.
Looking much better John, nice bit of sky painting too.

Thanks Dave
Nice improvement to the backscene John. Very cleverly executed. Cheers Euan

Good work John especially on our traincrew building
Thanks Steve. Is the train crew building a training centre and offices?

Hey John the back-scene looks fantastic. I’m totally amazed at your artwork for the sky, you made it look so easy. I’m sure it’s not lol. Cheers Geoff

Jealous John. Had so much go wrong since we moved. Just had to fork out for a new roof....layout is on hold :(

Lol, thanks Alex and fraid so taught art for years, went to art college and so on.
His "good evening everyone" sort of gives it away on every video too

Thanks for the advice I can knock up a 10mm shop and see how it looks and Then find a suitable scene to go behind that . 👍🏾😀

Thanks Leslie, yes I know, but sadly I cannot include everything, it is a representation of the area. Hopefully most is recognisable.
I think the colour of the blank card was a better representation of a typical Manchester sky 😂
Lol, maybe, far too depressing for me.
