- How To Replace Rear Brake Pads And Disc Rotors On A 2017 Subaru Legacy
In this video I’ll show you how to replace rear brake pads and disc brake rotors.
THIS IS THE 2017 SUBARU LEGACY SIXTH GENERATION (2014-2019)
Tools I used:

Excellent video. Nicely organized, especially mentioning UP FRONT the tools needed, like the tool for retracting the emergency brake piston and the 7mm ALLEN socket. Well done. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent Job. Planning on replacing my rear rotors/pads in on my 15 legacy. Local mechanic did my front ones a few months ago and they charged me 580.00. i just did my 2013 Honda pilot rear and front and it was not bad at all. I took my time but i got them done with no issues. Thanks again!
Thanks , good video . Wire brush the bracket and caliper before you re install. Lube the 7mm Allen pins before install.
Great video; helped clear up some issues my son and I were having with another video while doing brakes on his '17 Legacy.
Thank you very much for posting this video. You did the best job in explaining how to do the brake job. I am going to do the same thing on my wifes car this Friday.
Glad I was able to help!
Great video overall. Only would suggest knocking the rust off the hub before putting a new disc on and re-greasing the slide pins when doing a brake job. Great trick with unplugging the E-brake unit and just turning it back in. Much more complicated on my VW, but looking forward to doing my wife's Subaru next week.
Thanks for the suggestion. Glad I could help. Subscribe & Like!
thanks for the upload. I'll be doing this in a few weeks.
Thanks for watching. Good luck!
Nice job! I hit that like.
Solid video. I didn't know they made a tool like that. I always use a c-clamp and a a sturdy yet thin piece of metal when pushing in the caliper piston.
You might already know this but on Subarus the caliper must be winded in, not smashed in. Righty tighty retracts it.
Thank you! Great video!
Thanks! Please share & subscribe!
Subarus workshop manual says to disengage the parking brake, remove the negative lead on the battery and then remove the connector to the back of the caliper. Then it is safe to wind back.
😊 thank you 🎉
Nice video! I am going to work on mine pretty soon. Could you provide more information on 12mm bolts? what is the thread size? 6M x12mm? or 5M x 12mm? or 8M x 12mm?
I this you asked this some time ago but just incase, I used the bolt that held the brake line in place. I just did my mom's 2017 Outback yesterday and that bolt worked perfectly. I worked it in and out of each hole a couple times using little pressure in the rotor popped off.
Anybody got the torque dpecs for the caliper bracket bolts?
My caliper piston has come out too far. Can this be pushed back in or do I need a new caliper
You can't just push it in with a c clamp. You need to wind/twist it back in first then you can push it back in the rest of the way.
Is there another tool that I can use to retract the emergency parking brake piston?
Sure. Just google, brake caliper piston retracting tool, the most reliable one would be a hand mechanical one that comes in a set for most common vehicles.
Thanks man. You could've just removed the brake caliper bracket instead of the calipers and then the caliper bracket, yes?
@@britonmarrett796 yes. But it's easier to remove the caliper itself first.
I was sure it was taking a OBD2 Scanner with EPB reset to push the caliper piston... :O
I have to do this next month on my Outback.
Good luck and refer back to this video for more reference, thanks for watching!
Looks like they have a magnolia tree too😊
Remove master cap and piston will be a lot easier
You don't have to do anything with the electronic parking brake to remove? Just make sure it's off before turning off the car?
Nice video, super clear. Thank you
This Particular model vehicle mechanically retracts just how I showed you in the video. Nothing electronic to do.
Couldn't you just have used a C clamp to retract the piston? Is that tool totally necessary?
No. It's threaded and must be winded in.
No .. its not a push piston it's a rotate one
