The beginning of one of the greatest trilogies ever made. Yes, I totally remember the hype around this game. How could you not? It was everywhere. Magazines, commercials, newspapers, and there where even specific play centers where you could test out the game. With this game Nintendo basically told Sega to take their blast processing and shove it LOL. It also made David Wise famous and Aquatic Ambiance still remains his most popular track ever. I have fond memories with this game as it was one of the last games I remember playing with my friend before he moved away. This will forever remain a classic in my book.
At the time I only had a Sega Genesis. So anything Super Nintendo was novel by default. I remember this pizza/birthday place we went to had a special kiosk with this game set up on it and everybody just took turns playing it for hours. It was so much fun.
I remember the commercial. Where they joked about it not being on a 32 bit system. This is my favorite video game of all time. Still holds up today and I loved tropical freeze. I can’t wait to play the new yooka laylee as it looks to be inspired by this series!
It's up there as one of my favorites too. I always have a blast with it. Yes, the new Yooka Laylee is currently on it's way in the mail to me. Everything I have heard about it sounds very promising.
That game blew my mind at the time. A friend brought it to my house, I had never heard of it before and he was like "you have to see this". I couldn't believe it. The music is also exceptional.
I was a little kid when Donkey Kong Country was first announced and, man, was there so much discussion about this game on the playground! One of my childhood friends had an SNES and I remember being so jealous that he was getting the game at launch as I only owned a Genesis at the time. He was nice enough to invite me over to play it and we spent hours trying to get through the game! When I finally got my own SNES, the N64 was already on the horizon, but I was still super excited to add this game to my collection as well as Diddy's Kong Quest. I have mixed feelings about Donkey Kong Country 3, but I'd say the Donkey Kong Country trilogy still holds up well today. They're just fun games!
Love DKC series! I got a DCK2 as a kid and played it a million times. I started learning English because I wanted to understand the manual for that game. Amazing soundtrack too.
DKC has been the most played game on my new SNES classic, I never owned an SNES but most of my friends had one and I remember playing DKC back in the day and being blown away. I never really played the sequels as a kid so I'm glad DKC is the one included on the SNES classic.
Very thorough review, makes it clear I need to try this game since I enjoy platformers. I remember being very impressed by the graphics when I first saw the game back in the 90s, but I had moved on to PC gaming so noticing the graphics was the extent of my thoughts on the game.
I remember watching the commercials of DKC and I couldnt believe it was on a SNES. Kids my age kept talking about in school cuz we never imagine a super nintendo game could look that good on the console.
I remember when this came out. I remember the commercial saying this is the 1st game that was fully rendered graphics. This was the first time Nintendo took a shot at Sega. They had the nerve to tell consumers that you won't find this game on Sega, 32 X or even Sega Cd.
It was fun, remember watching the VHS tape. I never got into the 2nd/3rd ones much, if at all I probably only played the 2nd one as a rental. To me, I feel like Vectorman was sort of a response to DK:C?
Vectorman was definitely a response to DKC. You're right. I remember that VHS tapes. I watched that tape again recently and it's so 90s it makes me laugh but I still love it.
@@RetroBirdGaming My mom gave me the option of DKC or Mortal Kombat 2 for Christmas that year.. I was so blown away by the graphics and music that even to this day; choosing DKC will never be a regrettable decision. Best Christmas ever.
I was looking to buy this on release back in the day but got put off it after reading comments by miyamoto about fancy graphics don't make a good game ( I think now he was probably misquoted ) but it stopped me from buying it at the time. I first got to play it in the early/mid 2000's when I bought a snes again - and wow what a game, the whole trilogy is one of my favorites and the first one is the one I seem to play the most!
I got the first one right when it came out, loved it, and beat it. Bought the second, but I found the formula to be somewhat stale at that point, so I sold it for almost nothing to Toys R US. Ignored the third one entirely, just didn't care because of Baby Kong and because Saturn was out by then. However, I'd like to go back and play all of them at some point, and maybe even get 100% clear for all 3. It was a very lame idea that Donkey Kong was only playable in the first game, his name is in the title of the games for cripes sake! That's some Sonic Team logic right there.
You're right. Cranky Kong always bothered me too. He's such a jerk, that I'm pretty sure that's the reason no one was excited about him being in Tropical Freeze. Now, don't get me wrong, Cranky is actually a strong companion in Tropical Freeze, but I definitely remember no one was hyped when they announced him.
The DKC Trilogy has one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time.
That's so sad :(

This might be my favorite game ever and definitely my favorite side scroller

I remember getting the SNES with Donkey Kong Country for christmas, that was probably my best childhood christmas.

I've actually heard that before. People who were into PC gaming at the time still taking notice of the graphics. Very interesting!
I remember watching the commercials of DKC and I couldnt believe it was on a SNES. Kids my age kept talking about in school cuz we never imagine a super nintendo game could look that good on the console.
Would Retro Bird go on his own huge adventure if all of his bananas were stolen? 🤔
Please keep making videos! They are amazing !
You got yourself a deal! Thank you for watching.

it looks so good on a crt
This first game is the game that made me the egregious over-spending Saturn game buyer I am today.
One of the funnest games ever. Hell maybe even the funnest for me. Platform games at least.
It's certainly a game I never stop having fun with.
I love DKC! It is the reason that I am on the hunt for a super NT.

And mario is the original jump man's grandson if 1994's Donkey Kong is the original Donkey kong's grandson 😂😂🍌🍌
I would remember the hype if I was alive. It was a wrong time right place sort of deal.
dkc mine carts are my fav..should have spinoff racing game
Haha that could be fun! Such great stages.

I respect that. Can't like everything.
I agree. Too modern graphics.

This game is legendary though I think DKC 2 and 3 are superior.
Yeah, I would probably agree.
