I love watching these "Which size is actually cheapest" videos because we in the Netherlands have (At least in most grocery stores I visited) have the kiloprice on the price tag.
No math recquired!
Lots of grocery stores in the USA have similar shelf tags, but as far as I can tell there's no regulation on what measurement they use for those "unit price" numbers. Or that stores have to use the same unit on those tags for all items in that type of product (cereal, candy, etc).
As long as it's /accurate/ they can show some per-unit prices measured by kilo/liter, some by 100g/100ml, some by ounces or pounds or gallons, some by "serving" (whatever the package says is a serving size), some by unit (for multi-pack stuff like individually wrapped granola bars or canned drinks), and so on.
And when things go on sale, they often don't include the modified unit price on the sale tag/sign.
It's a real pain to parse since you need to re-calculate constantly as product prices change. Most people just give up thinking about it eventually... which I suspect is the point. Don't think, just buy.

@@tamrabrawley4573 I thought another bot was replying to this comment. basically there's these bots claiming to be part of an anti troll group that is (hypocritically) doing acts beyond just simple trolling and is going into straight up threats and death wishes for matpat the previous host of the show. Either I was wrong for this comment or the someone else deleted the bot comments (maybe even youtube is finally starting to notice but I doubt that). Go into the replies of other comments or even other videos on the channel and you might see what I mean.

I was on the supermarket the other day a small pack of Quakers cereal (450gr) costed 3.25€ while the family size (600gr) costed 6.40. If I were to buy 2 small boxes I would get them at the same price of the family size but I would get way more cereal (300gr more). This should be illegal. It's literally misleading marketing

I have to say to you Santi, you have not only just filled the shows shoes since mat left. But you brought your own personality and high energy. So you are doing a great job. And you have retained a loyal watcher.
I have a theory about why the small boxes have more cereal than advertised. General Mills is shrinkflating each box while also raising the prices. People aren’t going to notice the number on the box if it feels like they are getting the same amount and if they then very gradually ease people into the smaller size they won’t notice. Why it doesn’t happen on the big box is because it’s much harder to notice visually.
I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The grocery store I normally go to has a "price per kg" next to the price sign for the food. That way you can compare prices when brands put stuff on different packaging sizes. It really helps with saving money.

There was a time, some months ago where Walmart was pricing the Doritos Party Size as a worse value than the Family size, and that lasted a while back then, always check the unit price to confirm.
Yep, plus it can vary from chain to chain which size is the best deal. And when stuff goes on sale, that lower price-per-unit is rarely marked on the signage. AND sometimes the unit price marked on the shelf tag is per ounce, sometimes it's per pound or liter, sometimes it's per package or per serving.
Even on different sizes of the same product, brands of the same type of thing, or comparing name brand vs store brand.
I'm pretty sure the lack of consistency is because they know very few customers want to think that much about every food choice (doing mental math or using a calculator) every time they shop. And the ones who DO think that much tend to leave extra satisfied with their purchases because they've "outsmarted" the store. Win-win for the company.
Walmart's unit prices aren't always accurate or will be based off of different units for the same product in 2 different sizes, so don't simply trust the shelf labels for the unit price.

Honestly I love that a decent batch of the food theory videos are based around "What things the best out of these options to buy?" Reminds me of the older Film and Game Theories that were mainly around math and science- This is just a funner way to remember some important info!
I miss Matt, but I'm quite satisfied with the new generation. Haven't missed an episode accross the theories series. The love of the theory is still so obvious.

In Australia, the mandatory unit pricing code was brought in by the ACCC in 2009. It requires major grocery stores and many other stores to display prices according to a common unit (eg: 100g, 1kg, etc). It makes things much easier for comparisons!
I wish it was like that in Canada.
It's generally on the shelf label, but not always. Sometimes it'll be price/unit, price/g, price/100g. It's annoying.
But when that info is there it's awesome.
@@OmegaRejectz I’ve actually started looking at the unit pricing more often than the item price if I’m buying something that has multiple sizes! Sometimes the medium size will be on sale, but the largest won’t be, so the medium is the best value for money. But other times, even if the medium is on sale, the largest size is the best value. Tricky supermarkets being tricky!

It is much cheaper to just have different sized boxes than to produce different sized bags too. They don’t have to have 3 different filling and bag cutting calibrations, which means they can make more product in a faster time, with the same amount of space as they would have with 3 different bags.
As a Southerner, I take umbridge at the idea that you can't bring Nilla Wafers to a party. You can, but they're going to be part of the homemade banana pudding.

If anything, the large sizes are the scam. Companies use this cost discrepancy to make you buy more than you need... and if you buy more than you need, you'll eat more than you need. I'm not really saving anything if I'm eating thrice the amount I would if I bought a serving size.

We have a handy little thing here in Hungary where retailers have to also show the price/kilogram or liter under the regular price of basically everything so its really easy to see what size of package is actually the best deal

Hey Santi, i have a theory idea for you. I got a large taco pizza from Casey's for dinner tonight. It was hot out of the oven, but when the lady handed it to me, it didn't feel all that hot in the box. This got me thinking.
How good is cardboard as a heat insulator?
A quick google search will tell you that cardboard (particularly corrugated cardboard) is an excellent insulator (aluminium foil wrapped is even better) unless it gets wet (steam, grease) in which case it's no longer a good insulator.
Additionally, if there are any kind of gaps in your cardboard structure, there's also the issue of heat escaping through those gaps. The structure needs to be air-tight to keep things insulated (which is why delivery pizza will come in a foil-lined, foam-stuffed insulated bag that seals tightly)
It's all about trapping air. Your best insulator is the one that can trap air the best.

There is price per oz in many American stores but not all of them
In America it depends on the grocery store. The unit of measurement also depends on the product. Some things are per ounce, per 250(or some other number), per pound, etc.
Ive only ever seen stuff like that on fruit and sometimes certain veggies here in America

One point I'd make about the candy, I've personally noticed that larger sized mms tend to look more beat up than smaller sizes, similarly to how you noted some cereal in larger bags was more crumbled. The candy is chipped and sometimes has odd, warped shapes.
I identify with all the chaos that surrounds Santi in these episodes. When I deal with food I also become a singularity of things happening

Just divide the $ cost by the # of oz = cost per oz, or the cost per size. At Walmart, this is already on the price tag.
They were seeing if the amount in there was the actual amount. Several times he said that cereal brands put more in the small packages then was listed on the box, the small chips ahoy had less then was listed, and of course the amount of crumbs from cereal

I have a potential theory- the large fries from Five Guys are popular because of the sheer amount of fries they give you, but they cost a lot more. I have found several times that the unit price at the store for the "regular" size bag of chips is less than the family or party. This is usually the case when chips are on sale. If both the party and regular size of the same brand and flavor are on sale, the unit price for the regular tends to be the smallest where I shop.
