    As cool as it would be to see a team of iconic monsters working together (like League of Extrordinary Gentlemen), I feel like it would be doomed to fail. From what you described, most of the characters would be villains in their respective movies to some degree, so having them team up for any reason seems unlikely unless the prize was a cure or solution to their problems. But then that also creates issues with power scaling; the Wolfman is a strong character, but then you have Tom Cruise in the corner of the room being the host to a literal death god and Dracula himself sitting at the meeting table.
    They should have made true horror remakes instead of going The Avengers route.

    I'd love to see the classic monsters come to the screen, both in solo adventures and in crossovers. As the ones that did it to begin with, it'd be good if Universal could get it together. But I'm also very willing to see the Monsterverse reborn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They already have comics based on most of the monsters since public domain and they've already got a good foot in the door with Werewolf by Night, not to mention their other horror/mystical stuff is going great! The Multiverse may be the focus currently, but I'd love to see them have a Dark corner as well. They could make it an annual Halloween event!

    A Universal Horror universe could have worked... but only if the the movies themselves and the central characters were compelling. Universal got the whole thing ass backwards and tried to build a castle before they had even finished solid foundations.

    Personally, I would love to see a second attempt done right and they need to be set when the original stories were set. Make them big budget versions of the Universal films with modern effects and elements from their original novels like the characterization of the Frankenstein monster or Dracula’s mustache design. The cinematic elements would be much more subtle instead of an obvious set up. Now this is where it gets tricky because I feel the Avengers movie of the series would be a Van Helsing versus monster movie but unfortunately they already did that with the 2004 movie so this is where I decided to make it be set present day with Detective Van Hesling and the many monsters are reawaken or reincarnated to our times.

    The biggest issue with the Dark Universe is that Universal has trying to straight up copy the MCU, with world scale threats and alot of action, as suppose to a horror films, which are more personal stories.
    I think this franchise could have work better if the movies follow a style similar to BTAS villain focus episodes, with the stories being told by monsters POV, with some being portrayed as sympathetic outcasts (like Frankenstein and The Creature from the Black Lagoon) or victims of some curse (like Wolfman and Hyde) and the plots having them trying to adapt to socieyt but being forced to isolated themselves bc of their behaviors and/or humanity fear of them. The only exception would be Dracula, who could work as villain, with his film being told by the perspective of his victim, with her trying to resist his manipulations and defeat the vampire.
    Also, a Van Helsing film should be the franchise equivalent of the Avengers, with the titular character showing up after witnessing the apperance of all these monsters in previous films.

    A shared universe of classic monsters would be interesting, but I don't think Hollywood has what it takes to pull that off right now, maybe in few years. But as Erod pointed out in this video, some people were able to take those scrapped ideas and turn them into gold, And we are getting a lot of interesting stand-alone monster movies these days.

    What I find funny is that we kind of do have a monster cinematic universe, albeit not with classic Universal Monsters. I of course mean the Monsterverse starring Godzilla and King Kong. What makes this so funny is that not only was the franchise started by Warner Bros. as another cinematic universe along with the DCEU (We all know how that one turned out) but one of its biggest stars is a character who has been Hollywood’s punching bag for his entire career.
    Speaking of which, I’d really love to see a series of Honest Reviews of the Monsterverse movies.
    As for a Universal Monster cinematic universe, I think I would like to see that, the title of the big Avengers-style crossover movie could even be “House of Frankenstein.” That’s what was used in 1944 and the TV remake in the late 90’s.

    See, I would have loved if they made these movies all lead to a reboot of The Monster Squad. Each movie would feel unique and only tie together via post credits scenes. Imagine, a dark gothic Dracula movie, a dramatic Wolfman movie, a slightly campy Creature from the Black Lagoon, an action/horror Mummy and a sweet/sympathetic Frakenstien movie all leading to a Monster Squad movie that wouldn't be announced until the final movie is out.

  • @Bladeslingersgamepreserve
    @Bladeslingersgamepreserve 3 месяца назад

    Honestly it baffles the mind as to why this was so hard. Start with Dracula and have it be about Van Helsing investigating and battling Dracula. Then do Frankenstein but have Van Helsing take the place of the ship captain who finds Dr. Frankenstein in the attic. That way you can have the movie still focus on him while connecting it to Dracula. This would also establish that Van Helsing is more than just a Vampire Hunter and that he is also capable of sympathy for monsters as he would be civil with the Monster when he appears following Frankenstein’s death. From there, you just follow Van Helsing as he deals with other monsters.

    I feel like the Dark Universe stumbled so bad that it took someone else to make the solo universal monster reboots look good. While I don't think that the invisible man was perfect and I'm very cautious about the Wolfman reboot. I can safely say that those movies are high art compared to the Tom Cruise snore fest of the Mummy.

  • @sebastianemond5313
    @sebastianemond5313 Месяц назад

    9:05 - 9:56 A moment that pissed me off about this reboot is the fact that they included a cameo of the Book of Amun Ra as a throw-away prop. If you're gonna have the Book of Amun Ra, a book that holds spells that can harm or destroy mummies, why not use it against Sofia Boutella's Mummy?? In fact, *why didn't they just have Oded Fehr play a descendent of his character, Ardeth Bay, from the original Mummy reboot trilogy,* still kicking a-s and following the medjai tradition into present day?!
    A way I thought could've fixed this movie would've been to have Charles Dance return as his Master from Dracula Untold, just as Jekyll is about to inject himself again, and break the needles, allowing Hyde to take over. The Master would say, "Sorry, Doctor, but for the next part of the game, I require your... *darker acquaintance.* " Then Hyde would look up to face the Master, grinning and asking, "So, *what's the next move then?* "

    I WANTED to like Drac Untold and The Mummy because the thought of a cinematic universe lead by more-or-less villains or at best anti-heroes seemed fascinating. I was even speculating if they would include Lovecraftian horrors of the big bad and the traditional, more "human" monsters standing against them. Could have been fun ... but I didn't like both movies, so I didn't mind that much that it stopped early. Still, with reboots happening everywhere, maybe they'll start again soon ...

    Imagine what would happen if they tried to make a live-action film adaptation of Darkstalkers. Not only would it be horrible, but we already had troubles with their God awful animated series from the mid-90s, where an obnoxious Harry Potter lookalike is the protagonist, while the beautiful Morrigan is a villain !

  • @JohnWilliams-cr2sz
    @JohnWilliams-cr2sz 3 месяца назад

    I really liked the concept of the Dark Universe, but I felt the execution was just all wrong for it. Like you said, trying to turn monster flicks into superhero movies was a misstep.
    Off the top of my head, I think a better way to go would have been scale down Tom Cruise's Mummy movie. No huge face cloud destroying London but the mummy work in the shadows, killing people and begin a slowly escalating threat before she was stopped. Cruise's character, with the death god dwelling inside him should have disappeared at the end with the audience not knowing if he was in control or the evil god was, leaving a mystery to be slowly solved over a few movies. They also could have tied back into the 90's Mummy movies by like having Alex O'Connell be the aged leader of the Prodigium, having used his family's wealth to establish it to combat the supernatural threats of the world. Have one or two agents be reoccurring throughout the movies that can either be the leads against one or two of the monsters, or work in the background as support for the main hero of whichever movie it is.
    When they introduced Van Helsing, those agents could be the ones to find him and bring him in, leading him to joining or just teaming up with Prodigium to fight Drac and others.

    I definitely wanted a classic monsters cinematic universe, they should be like the Mummy (1999) an be set in appropriate time periods that suit these monsters such as Dracula set in the 1890’s and Frankenstein set in the early 1800’s the very times the books were written in.

    Well I can't believe this monster cinematic universe at Universal Pictures didn't happen hopefully they will go back to the drawing board in the future. I hope the upcoming wolfman with blumhouse studios does much better then what we could have gotten in the 2010 era of monster movies. Dark Universe would have been entertaining and amazing to see on the big screen. Great episode of legends of Fandom from the blockbuster buster as usual.

  • @karabearcomics

    I'd say another Legends of Fandom could easily be on Star Trek: Phase II. Of course, you could go even further back and do one of the very early scrapped superhero adaptations, the Republic Pictures Superman serial, which became Mysterious Doctor Satan when they couldn't get the license. Granted, it may be harder to get information about what the original idea for the serial would have been, since it may have been lost to time, but it could be a nifty video.

    Well, DC Comics did have their own take of a Monster Mash with a Suicide Squad/Guardians of the Galaxy flair...I would have liked to see the team up of some of the Monster Classics with the flavor of Hellboy. It might work as a tv series to introduce each team member. Maybe reference the best franchise The Mummy series (though I only see The Mummy and the Mummy Returns as the classic), and perhaps make mention of the O'Connells being the founders of the Big Good Organization that is akin to BPRD. Traveling the world, stopping evil of the week, neutralize cursed artifacts, the whole shebang. And perhaps the Big Bad would be akin to Lovecraftian Elder Gods
    But that's just me.
    Though some work better as their own stand alone stories such as the Invisible Man (2020) and one of my favorite Guillermo Del Toro films, The Shape of Water.

    If they were more like Disney/Marvel up until last Avenger's Movie (at the time of this writing), they could've gotten something out of the Dark Universe since the ideas/stories did have actual potential, but instead, like DC and others at the time, they had to rush/play catch-up and it ultimately failed.
    Seriously, we could've "eaten good" on these type of movies of a connected universe if they took the time to bake it all together. Instead, they had to shotgun it and here we are.
