So glad Mr Kopel transferred from the Air Force.
He really nailed the difference between the Air Force and Navy (philosophically) from the perspective of a fellow Naval aviator.
What a voice! Thanks for taking me back for a 3 hour visit to my 20’s and 30’s.
I was a pilot in the Navy’s last F-4 squadron (VF-154) Miramar, the First Fleet F/A-18 squadron (VFA 132) and an operational test pilot in VX-4, flying F-4’s, F-14A and APlus, and was the F/A-18 Tactics Model manager. What a great life and adventure for a young man, and Mr Koppel …. thank you for your story. David, We might even know each other.
Thanks Jocko for bringing us this story and your strong and very true paradigms and lessons learned from our fellow warriors

Tom’s daughter here. Are you a cousin? Don’t know what the school window thing is. There wasn’t a horse in the kitchen, it was trapped in the frozen pond and he freed it with an axe to the ice. Yes he slipped on some wet leaves on the roof in a storm a few years ago, broke his pelvis and tried to walk it off. He almost died. It wasn’t funny.

You’d have a hard-time keeping up with him in conversation. Jocko’s a great interviewer, full stop, and what you characterize as pity on his part was simply astute direction of the dialogue. Delete your comment or apologize.

@@gennnyko6340 you need to check your attitude. No one made any assertion that he was. Go back and listen again to how often he would ask, what was the question? Where were we?
Truth be told, I suffered brain damage and I very nearly died 15 years ago. This gentleman's comments struck a chord with me because I have those moments myself and I'm self conscious about it. I was complementing Jocko on his grace so as to not cause any stress or discomfort. People aren't always so tolerant or kind. Perhaps you could take a lesson.
I think this gentleman was a delight to listen to. Frankly, it's one of my favorite shows that Jocko has done. I've always wanted to fly and that dream will have to remain a dream for me. But he painted such wonderful pictures with his words that I was truly entranced.
If you're looking for a fight, look elsewhere. If you want to come off sounding like some crusading badass, go elsewhere. When your maturity level increases, you may learn that sometimes people's words have a different connotation than the ones that you assign to them.
I'm not apologizing to anyone because my words carried no ill intent. Furthermore, please give this wonderful gentleman my best wishes and thank him for appearing on the show. Now I have to figure out how to get my hands on some of that bread. It sounds fantastic.
      Best wishes to you.

Tom is an understated guy and reluctant to a fault be seen as bragging, plus factor in the newness of being on the national stage as the guest of someone as impressive and cool as Jocko. Tom has six Air Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal with the Combat “V” for valor, all earned in combat, with harrowing details, and approximately 200 carrier landings, many at night, in his squadron VF-142 Ghostriders (it’s funny how the writers of the first Top Gun movie used the coolest squadron name they could find for that famous “negative, Ghostrider, the pattern is full” line. ) He was in the first class of Top Gun and helped write the manual that is used today. He also has a lot of dead friends from that war. He won’t brag, but I’m his daughter and so I’ll shamelessly and unapologetically brag about him. Yes, he was reserved, but Jocko and Dave are the best and did an incredible job of drawing him out. Tom is also an amazing writer with perfect recall and I am drawing his memoirs out of him one email at a time. If you knew him, you would like him, and if you heard his experiences firsthand, and more of them, in detail and breadth that can only fit into a lifetime of knowing him and you would be blown away.

(THE ART OF SHADOW BOXING) - DW master of shadow boxing
One ponders in two steps over a great index, while shadow boxing is a 4 step pattern containing 1 convex step, and 1 concave step
To defeat darkness one must dream. To try and defeat ones shadow, is to try and fall asleep.
The shadow boxer keeps one edge of his sword sharper. This allows the art of shadow boxing to split hairs.
Throughout the universe on a grand scale, wherever there is more light, there is more gravity.
To defeat darkness, think like the sun, seeing the world for the first time each morning over millions of years.
    - Over the Mountains -" There is a stone on top of the mountain that shapes the horizon where the feathered eagle struggles to fly this stone simply lies consistent in the heights."
or - Over the Plains - " Put your mind out to pasture, let your thoughts graze on muse, drink from the spring of conception as the conscious herd drifts through stimulating hues."
Shadowboxing is the only martial art designed to defeat darkness.
To defeat ones shadow in battle, under the Axis of the eclipse, and in the exact moment that the shadow boxer becomes the driving force within nature, fighting the darkness, and achieving master...This act is one step from God, and one step from suicide, one step from total enlightenment that can only be obtained in death.
A master of shadow boxing finds his death, like he finds his eclipse...ready.
He is free to move towards, or let it come.
There is no martial art more natural than shadowboxing. Where in Kung Fu a man might transform to monkey, crane, or tiger. In shadowboxing even a cat or dog will fight with it's shadow.
Now if you give a tiger a sword and tell it to fight a housecat, the housecat will win.
Of all the martial artists, a master of shadow boxing defeats his opponent, while sustaining the least amount of damage.
Shadowboxing is the root of martial arts. Is it wise to shadow box before, after, or during a fight?
To a boxer the answer is both, too the shadow boxer all 4, is the answer.
    -Growth in Shadow Boxing-
The shadow boxers physical prime is as steadfast as his will. If one ounce of his being tries to inflict damage by physical superiority, speed, strength, pressure, pace, all the flaws of a human opponent, their actions become ripples of chaos.
The shadow boxer must conduct battle, stay diligent, with a clear mind. He must swim to his destination, not flail harder and drown.
At peace while at war. Watching, waiting, learning, but most importantly improving, staying focused against any "temptation" that would cause them to branch away from the root.
This causes growth. A slow improvement against the impossible.
" It is impossible to get better at something that is impossible. This is called growth.
And if the shadow boxer were not boxing, and to remain dormant, they would not be a shadow boxer, and be a shadow watcher. However, just as in any martial art, a shadow boxer will only grow, and develop as hard as they work.
The shadow boxer can become as a God in nature. Who in the moment of Axis of the eclipse, transforms into the driving force fighting darkness on Earth, and executes his own will, to move Heaven, and Earth to victory!
Or can buy a plane ticket to an eclipse, and throw a few punches. Both can defeat their shadows in battle. The choice is yours! The shadow boxers physical prime is as steadfast as his will to be victorious.
If all martial artists devoted themselves to shadow boxing. There would be great duels, as students wishing to retain the title of master, gathered at the Axis of the eclipse, fighting their shadows simultaneously.
The boxer goes into a shadow boxing match accepting defeat, he trains to accept defeat.
It is impossible to get better at something, that is impossible?
(Natural Selection and Light inn Nature)
Just as the art of shadow boxing is illuminated by these writings, the solar system the sun, and the universe throughout by the solar systems, and in return will write our stories in the stars...the art of shadow boxing is to fight darkness, and natural selection is not confined to Earth.
    - (Exercise the power of Destination) by eliminating distraction -
SPEED DEFEATS STRENGTH, TIMING DEFEATS SPEED, and DESTINATION DEFEATS TIMING
The shadow boxer must exercise the power of destination to defeat their opponents timing. One is allowed to do this by focusing on defeating darkness, eliminating all the distractions of outside influence.
"There is a stone on top of the mountain that shapes the horizon where the feathered eagle struggles to fly this stone simply lies consistent in the heights."
" Along the path of urgency are those waist deep in destiny beyond the muck and mire where men burn their desires a patient stone resides."
" The pebble in your boot is greater than the mountains in your way."
If God were to endow one immediately with total understanding and enlightenment, you would feel no different....Just a the sun creeps across the eclipse, and years. You would experience the world anew. The difference would be a second encounter, with the first circumstance. The world would not have changed, but the shadow boxer.
Once a man accepts death, often he has put a hold on how much it can be lived. Shadow Boxing is a free solo ascent, where one can fall from 50 feet, or 500 feet
