I feel for Bob every time Paul tells him not to wind in any line after getting a bite! 😁 Non-anglers may wonder why Paul is so insistent that Bob leaves things alone; it's mainly so that the hook stays put whilst the bendiness of the rod absorbs the shock of the fish's sudden movements. Winding in line against a resisting fish can easily cause the hook to pull free. Fishing with lightweight tackle and very fine line (which is used because it doesn't alert nervous fish to the angler's presence) means that a fish can't just be hauled ashore by brute strength. The line would break. As Archimedes discovered, a 15 pound fish in water has mass but weighs nothing, which is why it can be caught on 2 or 3 pound line, and why even a monstrous 1,500 pound black marlin can be caught on 50 pound line. The line will only break if you wind in too quickly, dragging the fish against water resistance, or if you try to lift the fish directly up out of the water. As long as it's submerged, it's effectively weightless. So a hooked fish can only exert a very limited amount of force on the line by shaking its head or swimming away from the angler. Water doesn't give much purchase (unlike being on land, there's nothing solid to push or pull against), so a flexible rod and an elastic nylon line soaks up this force, and will usually stop the thin, surprisingly weak line from snapping. Paul is saying "Don't wind!" in order to let the springy fishing rod do its job. Unless the fish is swimming directly towards you, frantically winding line onto the reel isn't a good idea. It puts a lot of unnecessary strain on the hook, which could easily pull out (or bend/straighten), letting the fish go. There is a problem, though, which makes things more tricky. Coarse fish in Britain are protected and must be released unharmed after capture. My dad only ever fished (and taught me to fish) with barbless hooks. A hook without a barb is much, much less unkind to fish than a barbed hook, but the only way to keep a fish attached is to maintain a small amount of tension on the line. With a barbed hook, it doesn't matter if the line is allowed to go slack. The barb will keep the hook in place no matter what. But a barbless hook - whilst much kinder to the fish's mouth - is far less secure, and a slack line will sometimes let the fish simply turn the hook with its tongue and spit it out. I don't know whether Bob and Paul use barbless hooks, but if they do, it takes a certain amount of 'feel' to keep a fish safely hooked. This only comes with experience, and that usually means losing a lot of fish before the technique is mastered. So... Paul's "Don't wind, Bob!" advice is fair, well-meant, and exactly right, but it's difficult to adhere to. Getting a bite - whether from a minnow or a marlin - is always a thrill, and in the excitement, winding in line just feels like the right thing to do. Nobody's perfect, though, and if angling weren't a challenge, tens of millions of people all over the world wouldn't bother doing it. The truth is, anyone can lose a fish for any number of reasons. A fisherman's favourite phrase in the pub is always, "You should have seen the one that got away..." 22:45 - Oh, mate!😢 Was that a 4 pound roach?
Ah, suits at work. I wore beautiful suits to my career job because I had begun to hate it and I was cheering myself up. Eventually I left and starting working for a fast-growing charity. I was told there was no dress code, we wore what we were comfortable in. So I wore a suit. And I was glad. It took some people a long time to get used to it 🙂
I love the fact that Paul is a good teacher but does get a bit narky and then genuinely apologises for it straight away. DON'T WIND..! Someone should put that into a dance track and bod saying i had a cheeky wind 😜 😅
I like to fish lakes also like watch the tv fishermen but these two are best iv seen as there two pals just for a catch n catch up n just been mates that’s why I like these two
Where did you get that from? Statins if anything reduce the risk of dementia. How does the public get such ideas which are at odds with all the evidence?
Lee Mack on the last show! What a disaster I don't know even if he tried fishing which would be worse his angling prowess or his attempts at comedy! Maybe a nice bloke if he worked anywhere else but entertainment! 😢
Hope Bob gets over his bout of shingles, Last nights episode was a total farce, Bad choice for a stand in for Bob, A vegan who thinks he's funny goes magnet fishing. Hope Dear Bob is back soon to keep his eye on Paul😆
