I wouldn't go that far, if a thief stole your card that had paywave on it, they can easily spend ALOT of your own money without even knowing your pin number. That's why I have a DC WITHOUT paywave on it so something like that will not happen. I'm sure you have recently heard in the news about thieves looking in peoples letter boxes to find DC or CC that has paywave on them so they can easily use it.
planetx15 the thing with pay wave is because it is contactless you have no issues of people skimming your card with the mag stripe or RFID chip. If you lose it they can only make purchases up to $100 in Australia and there is a maximum limit you can go up to sometimes. You also get all your money refunded if that happens, I honestly don't see the problem with paywave. It's the safest way to process a POS transaction. Also if a thief stole your card why stop at pay wave? They can just go online and buy something really expensive with your card details, pay wave would be of little concern.

"If you lose it they can only make purchases up to $100" That's correct, IF you had it without the paywave function, the thieves wouldn't have any access to your money instantly, so you will save $100. If I lost my DC they wouldn't be able to purchase any items with my card whatsoever because with my card it does not have the CVV number at the back. My card is just a plain eftpos/atm card that has no chip, no paywave and no CVV number, to me I find that to be much safer as thieves will find it impossible to have access to my account. If I lost my DC without my knowledge and some random picked it up they will not be able to spend a cent with it. I can still use the card to make purchases from stores and withdraw money from the ATM aswell using my PIN mumber which thieves wont know.
For your first point, if you have a Visa/MasterCard debit or credit card without pay wave or paypass it would mean that it wouldn't have a chip and therefore thieves can still sign for purchases as the new pinwise initiative only affects RFID chip enabled cards. The new paywave cards are chip enabled and safer for the fact that you cannot use a signature for purchases so no one can forge your signature like they can on unchipped visa/mastercard debit or credit cards. I understand what you are saying about your EFTPOS card but my original point was talking about the safest way to process a transaction at a merchant terminal. This is when you are in control of your card and have it in your possession. You are talking about if you lose or have your card stolen which isn't what my original point was. Your magstripe is the least safe way to process a transaction compared to chip or contactless due to being more at risk of skimming. Thieves can have access to your money/card details for POS purchases which they won't get through paywave. However this is unlikely to happen i understand. I completely agree that if you lost your card and someone picked it up they can't use it without your pin to make purchases or use an ATM or go online, but i was simply saying that if your card isn't lost/stolen the safest way to process a POS transaction is with contactless technology. Also Visa/MasterCard cover you for unauthorised use so you're money is safe if people use pay wave with your card, and if it is a credit card it's the banks money so none of your money is ever taken from you, only the banks money so you're safer that way knowing no one has access to your personal funds :)

I do however, have another card that has the benefits on it though Paywave, Chip ect... just so I can buy things online (because it needs the CVV number), but I leave that card at home. I find that using as EFTPOS card that does not have any benefits on it when it comes to purchasing something in a store and typing in your pin number alot more accurate and reliable, that if i was to tap the card on the machine.

Have a bank that offers zero liability. Carrying cash is never gonna be as convenient as a bank card plus if you loose cash that's permanent. With a debit card you can have that protected if you reported the problem in a timely maner
One way i protect myself in terms of my visa debit card is i am registered with online banking and i also have the mobile app and each time my card is used i get a message from the app and an email from online banking saying my card was just used and it says where it was used and the amout.i can actually deactivate my card right from my phone if i notice transactions that i didn't do.
