If you wanted to I am sure you could install those panels on your south facing roof so you would have no leaks. I installed 36 panels on my south facing tile roof and am happy I did because of the high winds I have had. They are installed close to the roof which makes them immune to the forces from the wind and heavy snow melt. I have never had a problem with them getting dirty. The rain and snow are all I use to clean them. My roof is too high to use a tool to clean them from the ground so I loose about one or two weeks of power a year due to snow coverage. I also have 12 panels installed on my adjoining shop roof, 6 facing west and 6 facing east. This gives me usable power in the morning and evening. I have considered installing 12 more panels on a south facing frame set at the optimal angle for the winter solstice sun. This array could be cleaned of snow and would give the most power when it is needed on the shortest days of the year. I get more than enough power from my solar system for about 10 months of the year. I go on/off grid any time I need to just by switching the switch that transfers my main load center from the power company to my solar load center. I wish I had the ambition to put in that solar array but I think I may watch you do your solar work instead.

I’m also going to go out on a limb here and say that I believe that with all of this construction experience your gaining with the new shop build, I’m wondering if you eventually plan to also build your family a new home on the homestead? I know it would be a huge project and investment of time but I think you’d do a fantastic job of it!

This is a wonderful project! I think anyone on private wells and septic should invest in solar or solar/wind combo. If they hook up their septic pump and well to it, they immediately provide what everyone living with municipal water and sewer can only dream about. If I still lived out in a rural area, I would do it. I would hook up my freezer, refrigerator, a microwave and my furnace fan to it also. And I would build a tornado shelter.
