HOW TO TAKE DATA IF YOU ARE NOT A SPEECH THERAPIST
Ready to try implementing some techniques in your home or as a related professional in a clinic setting, but not sure how to correctly track a child's success?! This video is for YOU!

3 Quick Tips on taking data for speech and language skills:
#1) BE SPECIFIC OF WHAT YOU ARE TAKING DATA ON
write your target down and be specific as possible
EXAMPLE: When I ask Johnny what he wants "chicken nuggets or macaroni" Johnny will independently point to his preferred item/object (this means NO prompt / help / or saying "show me" or "tell me") If you DO prompt - CIRCLE your + or - (so you know when you look back at data)
another example: When provided with a verbal routine (ready, set, __) Johnny will say "GO!" without a model
another example: When Johnny wants a cookie, he will imitate the "oo-ee" sounds given verbal and visual prompts/cues- (this is when you are saying the sounds and using hand cues to elicit his imitation) *you would NOT need to circle your + or - here because your goals states that you are giving a prompt
#2) SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS within the natural environment
place a notepad or sticky note WHERE EVER it is that your child will be attempting these productions OR receiving prompts from you! (i.e. in the kitchen, in the playroom, on the bookshelf, in the living room, etc etc)
#3) BE SPECIFIC WHEN TAKING DATA
be intentional to notice whether or not you are giving a prompt
*here's a hint: if you are saying "SAY ___" or "Tell me __" that IS a prompt AND a model of the word. If you are using a verbal routine (one, two, ___) that IS a prompt; If you are using a speech sound hand cue this IS a visual prompt; if you are modeling the word for your child, that is a prompt! MOST of the time, you WILL be prompting because you are TEACHING a new skills, only when the skills is beginning to acquire consistently do you reduce or decrease the prompts/cues!
    PRO TIPS:
**Take extra notes on how your child was feeling the day that you prompted or took data - DO NOT PUSH THEM on their bad days or when they did not sleep well! Go EXTRA hard on their great days!
**Start at a level that is LOWER than what you think they are capable of - then attempt the same skill without prompts; then INCREASE the difficulty of that skill - possibly add on a skill or word or reduce the cues/prompts
***MAKE IT FUN! Incorporate targeting skills during PLAY routines!
***REWARD your child for attempting difficult skills!! Do a little, get a little, do a lot, get a lot! Given them HUGS, TICKLES, HIGH FIVES, LOLLIPOPS, AIRPLANE BABY, ETC ETC, whatever your child likes!

I just have to tell you, I know your target audience is parents/guardians, but as an SLP, I really appreciate your videos for myself. The techniques you cover are things I was always looking to learn but was never taught in school, and therefore had to figure out on my own. Also, now I have go-to accessible resource for families! Thank you for all that you're doing!

This is so nice!! Thank you! I couldn’t agree more! it’s hard as an SLP to see what other SLPs are doing because we always work alone! So when I first started early intervention I had to figure out how to do in home sessions (because I had only done clinic sessions & school session) by shadowing other professionals (behavior specialists, BCBAs, ITDS, etc) and learn how to run a session & implement speech therapy, you know?! So just wanted to say, I feel ya & hi friend! Lol thanks for watching & sharing!

Can you make a video on how to take fluency data? Can you cover examples of data taking for part word, whole word and phrase repetitions? Thank you very much for your videos during the covid crisis.

How many opportunities do you give the child to respond before marking the did not attempt/incorrect response legend?

Thank you, we are just starting our speech therapy journey. My son is 3.5 with unclear speech / doesn't speak very much. Can I ask how you select a word to work on? Are there some good / easier words to start with?

Hey there! Start with onomatopoeias (fun words that sound like sounds! - I have a video on this!) and then begin with words that begin with /m, p, b/ as those are the first 3 developmental speech sounds! I think I have one on this too with those hand cues! :)
