Dance of the Black Sea Circassians by Kabardinka

  • The choreography performed by the Ensemble of Kabardinka is a collection of various Circassian dance figures and influenced by the Western Adyghe tribes Ubykh, Natukhay and Shapsug who once used to populate the Black Sea coasts of the Northwest Caucasus for thousands of years with their Abkhazian cousins before they were completely exiled from the region by Russian Empire in 1864. They lost more than three quarters of their populations during the Circassian Exile. The aggression and the later actions against the native people of the region by Russian Empire are considered the first modern systematic genocide by many historians and it was a role model for later genocides committed by different countries around the world although the only country officially recognizing it is Georgia. Today most of Circassians live outside of their native homelands scattering around the world. As a result Ubykh language went completely extinct in 90's and other ethnic groups/languages are waiting for the same fate.
    There are many ancient elements during the performance reflecting some of the very old rituals of Circassians. The Circassian Circle is an important symbol and its origin goes back to the old Pagan culture. There were relics or sometimes a tree representing the Deities in the center of the circle in earlier times. Circassians would dance around the relics singing songs and hymns specific to the ritual's theme like funeral, wedding, harvesting, holy days, etc. The dancing area was accepted as a holy place and no one could enter without permission. The Hatiyago/Ceguako (the solo dancer who has a ritualistic stick) is portrayed as one of its earliest forms and has complete control over the ceremony like an ancient priest. Every dancer/member of the community should obey the Hatiyago's directives to take place the ceremony properly.
    Nowadays this character has significantly changed from its origins mostly because of Islamic influences, although is still an important part of Circassian weddings. Today they generally act as a supervisor/organizer in the weddings, but in ancient times their missions were much more than that. They supervised important ceremonies like weddings as it's today but also they had a vital mission to represent and carry anything related to Circassian society, like traditions, music, songs, mythology and history to the next generations. They were the living memories of Circassians who had only oral lore.
    All rights belong to Kabardinka.

    For those who are wondering why the dances of the Scots and Irish are similar to ours
    the English intelligence officer James Bell lived in the Circassian villages for three years, from 1837 to 1839. He left written observations of traditional dances, songs, musical instruments, in which he repeatedly pointed out the identity between the Circassian and Scottish music: “If I didn’t know anything about them (Circassian melodies) and I was asked what they represent, I would answer:“ Old Scottish songs ”. ["Journal of a residence in Circassia during the years 1837, 1838, and 1839", Bell James Stanislaus, 1840.]
    There is also an Irish dance called the "Circassian circle", of course it is not the same as ours, but there are similar moments, but neither we nor the Irish need to be accused of stealing, after all, we have very similar stories with the Celts (we experienced it ourselves bad empires) and places of residence, these are mountains and foothills

      @@wildalbalass4867 The similarities are interesting, sure but many symbols, mythology and rituals are very common in Northern European Pagan Cultures as John Colorusso mentioned in his studies. They might be somehow related millennials ago or influenced each other. Black Sea Circassians were in constant contact with many cultures including Greeks as sea trade was very important and the region was a very busy passage between Eurasia and Middle East all the time. As an interesting note, Loreena Mckennitt believes her roots are in Northern Caucasus and actually she visited a small town in Turkey where many Circassian/Abkhazian villages are settled around it and she performed traditional dances with local people there. The origins of Circassian/Abkhazians are very disputable topic. They have no genetic or linguistic relations with their neighboring nations. It looks as if they were there all the time as far as we know. Maybe we might learn much more info in the future as more people study on them.

    Circassians have often been called the most beautiful ethnic group on the Earth. A mixture of good genetics, diet and living at high altitudes also enables them to live far older than many other ethnic groups. Many among them live into their 100s

      But none of these dancers fit the description of the actual Circassians of old. I think the title remains, but between the genocides, harem slavery, and diaspora and the mixing that comes with that, the actual Circassian people are sadly extinct.

      Same with me! I'm fascinated. Have you caught the wonderful video of Ubykh children performing a traditional dance at a Ubykh wedding reception? You may already know that the Ubykhs were one of the thirteen original Circassian tribes of the Caucasus before the Russian policy of decimation and subjugation under Czar Alexander II caused a mass migration of Ubykhs into Turkey along with other Circassians. Some Ubykhs also settled in Palestine at that time and later became Israeli citizens. Although, they still have their own distinct community there. [Please note: "Ubykh" is misspelled the video heading.] Enjoy it!

    I was watching random videos from different nationalities and stopped here. I loved seeing these dances and the bodily harmony of the movements.
    I liked the dance soundtrack, I would like to know the name of the song used in this presentation.

      Оставьте в покое черкесов и вообще весь Северный Кавказ. Кавказ еле устоял в столетней войне с Россией. Разбирайтесь в своих проблемах, к другим не лезьте. Черкесы больше всех пострадали, их чуть не истребили. Оставьте нас в покое.

    I have the impression that the music has Eastern influences, while the dancers' moves have something in common with Celtic dances (ex. Irish dances). I wish someone could explain to me the history of Circassian people. Thank you so much for sharing this work of art. Greetings from Italy

    • @hyperform
      @hyperform  3 года назад +8

      Hi, mate. there is some information about the dance on the video description. The music is based on traditional Circassian rhythms but slightly modernized. Choreography is a mix of various Circassian dances with some artistic interpretations. Celtic and Northern Caucasus cultures have several similarities but scientifically there has been no evidence found to support a direct connection between them yet as far as I know.
      Anything else you want to know, just ask.
