What is an interesting fact you learned about the Kutuzov cruiser? For the first time in the history of Russian shipbuilding, armor plating became not only protection but also supporting structure. This increased strength and reduced weight, making it possible to strengthen the armament and multiply the ammunition. In her first campaign, her mission was to get into the most powerful storm to understand what was really built.
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

To everyone saying "why is this ship a naval legend," and "why cover a cold war era ship," no it didn't fight in any battles or do anything particularly impressive, but obviously trying to best represent history they focus on museum ships so they can get detailed footage of them and own the intellectual property, and the Kutozov is the only artillery style ship from the Soviet navy that is preserved as a museum ship. Being based in a former Soviet country and having a large Russian playerbase, it would be surprising to me if they didn't feature the ONLY Soviet museum ship that makes any sense to feature besides the Aurora.
Sax Panther it is naval legend bc maybe it didn't sunk? During battles
Naval legends is mainly about preserved warships. With few exceptions. Those being Bismarck and Yamato.
At least this ship was actually built and used. Honestly I get why they have to try so hard with the soviet union. Russia's ww2 naval exploits are small potatoes compared to the real naval powers of the time hell the US and great Britain even lent some of their ships to the soviet navy for the duration of the war. Real life history is not always conducive to a balanced playing experience.
There is more to it than how many battles it fought. Most navy ships will never fight in actual combat. I just enjoy learning more about ships, especially less well known ones. Keep up the amazing work! :D The quality of this series is incredibly good!
this class were operated by two navy in this world Russian and Indonesian navy
No there other country too
But i forgot the country name
It is sverdlov class too
I think its on middle east
I love those secondaries. They look so cool with their own radar mounts lol.
This is KRI Irian sister, very good!
Fantastic production.
Love the info overlays on top of real elements.
Also nicely inserted dramatic footage is great.
Thanks :)
Well, saving lives, instead of taking it, is legendary too, in my opinion. As for the other things she did, not so much.
WG should do a video about IJN destroyer Ikazuchi & Inazuma who rescued 442 British & American sailors from the water, after the Second Battle of the Java Sea.
All aboard!
I love it
BAM! They've been sunken! FIRE 2!
+World of Warships Muy buen video war gaming
+World of Warships More history please, these vids give me a raging brainer
+World of Warships When are you guys going to cover the service record of the Iowa class?
Was on her deck back in January, only 2 decks below are open. The ship was very impressive it was ashame more decks were not open. Infact my Facebook pic is me and my family on her deck.
such a beautiful ship! It one hell of a monster cruiser
one of them is owned by Indonesia, namely the Nikita Khrushchev and changed her name to KRI IRIAN
It seems like a good ship, and as a warship documentary this video was a well done production (great narrator, well researched, etc.) ...but why is this ship a legend? What victories did he enjoy? What tragedy did he suffer? The ship's history can be summed up as "cruisers gonna cruise". I'm can think of Russian warships from WW 1 and 2 that truly deserve the label 'legend' before this one. The ship and the crew deserve real respect for serving, but legendary?
It's the last full artillery warship in the Soviet Union and survived
+Kaneis Pain that is interesting. I don't see how that qualifies as legendary.
+John Martin it survived and served
+Kaneis Pain Survived what? The Cold War? It was built in the 50's and was one of the last gun cruisers built. I can't imagine what they are gonna use for Tier X. Will we be seeing Kara class cruisers with anti-ship missiles or something. Many other Soviet ships deserve the honor of legend before this ship. I see this pretty much as advertising for their new premium offering.
+gey yuo I guess so
I bought this bad boy in-game. It is hands down the best cruiser I have in my line-up!😎
I'm still waiting for the Iowa class.....
+Lone Wolf (Sgt Blackburn) I'm waiting for them to do the Enterprise CV-6 or CV-65. One former the most decorated ship in WWII. The later the first ever nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
The Missouri also deserves to be done.
+David Gale the Missouri is an Iowa class battleship and wargaming are only using WW1/WW2
+Kaneis Pain you watched the video, right? the part where they state over and over that this ship was built in the 50s? (WW2 was over before the 50s, in case you didn't know)
+T. Blackburn there is a Iowa navel legends now
Metric please.
Second that
+velikiradojica The video is in metric on Wargaming Europe's channel. I think this channel is primarily administered by Wargaming North America.
deadasparagus Thank you very much for the reply.
+deadasparagus but Canada uses metric system, so shouldn't they include it, if it is by WG NA?
+DennisLego You could argue that, but I would think the number of Canadians VS. American players on the NA sever is pretty lopsided toward the American players. It's just easier for them to do it just in Imperial and have the smaller amount of people who want it in metric just go to the video where everything is in metric, it's only a few extra clicks I don't think that it's that big of a deal.
Sooo this ship did nothing majorly that actually makes it a legend :P ?
+The Sunken Swede (rilleboy) well they have to pick a ship from somewhere since you already know their track record during WWII
+The Sunken Swede (rilleboy) We live in the age of participation awards... But is there an award for not even participating? Not a very good legend IMO.
+The Sunken Swede (rilleboy) It's a legend because it is Russian... Dev bias confirmed.
+The Sunken Swede (rilleboy) Well last time they talked about a class of ship which others would have mentioned to be one of the worst ships ever build.... I think at this point even my dog who is affraid to go into 3inch of water would be considered a legendary ship!
+thefaller01 Ohh wait i was confusing with the 1:42 episode they aired on the wargaming europe channel, talking about the borodino class. But still my point remains, they also praised that ship by just being badly built and also fail miserably on the only battle it played any role...
The Project 68 class Navy Cruiser like the Kutuzov is a crossed over of the old naval technology and the new conventional naval technology for the navy surface warship. Although i have some question, if the Murmansk was also a Project 68 class vessel, like the Kutuzov. This type of naval ship is look so powerful.
Good! *Giai Thoai Bat Hu* thank you so much!
It is amazing these ships!! Wish it was still this way and not all missles and stuff
i really enjoy both your game and these documentaries. they are fantastic you even covered the two ships parked in our local museum waterfront park. the uss sulivans and the USS little rock. absolutely fantastic.the game itself is great but i wish there was a structured campaign type of play as well. something with a storyline/plot. i kind of feel bad because i have been playing mostly free play, you guys deserved to get paid something. sadly i am out of work right now so i have to watch my money very closely. i also find allot of humor in your cartoon animation series.
have you played world of warships? why the hell not!!! sink the yamato
Really good video, would be interesting to see a few British ships or anything else like this to do with the European theatre of war!!
What a legendary ship. The most amazing part of the legend was when they said the captain had dinner on board made for him! In a room! By his own chef! And..... wait... IT HAD A PANTRY!!!! omgoshwhatalegend# love it.
Navel Legends.. So... A ship that never fired her guns in anger, did mostly escort and political deployment missions and at a time saved sailors. That is a Navel legend..? What about HMS Warspite. or the HMS King George the V. Ship that actually fought ship to ship actions and who have a roll of battlehonours longer then most of the ships in this series combined. Or the cruisers from the Royal Navy that hunted down the pocket battleship Graf Spee, or heck the Itallian battleships Vittorio Venetto and Roma, ships of a navy very few people know off but gave a good accounting of themselves in the mediteranian where the Itallians boasted a rather formidable navy. Or the German U-boats, allthough not ingame those craft where a formidable foe to beat. USS Enterprise. The Big E, The American carrier that refused to die and who's sailors got the honor of a presedential unit citation. Or the KMS Bismarck, who shot up the Hood and gave the Royal navy one of its biggest defeats in years. Thats what I call Naval Legends.
their are stupid and useless ships.
Geez,, they just put 2 of their ships into Naval legends category, the rest are all Western and Japanese ones. Let them honor theirs ship a bit please. Every ship deserve a respect, even it just a humble one.
What about the USS Enterprise (CV-6)
If that isn't a naval legend I don't know what is.
Hữu Quyền Đinh im agree with you, after all this is their game
They should also do one on the Admiral Graf Spee the German pocket battleship
this ship is have a sister named ordonikhitzhe, and the Soviet give that ship to Indonesian navy and renamed as KRI Irian
Rifly Afriadhi yeah mate even irian facing angainst iowa but dont know iowa even cannot sunk a small ship and karel doorman retreat because its risky if karel contacting with irian and I want know why iowa not sink irian? and yeah KRI Irian ever disapear and no one know it and irian story is dark no one know why irian sunk
KRI Fleet some historian said, she isn't sunk, she is scrapped in Taiwan, other historian said, she was intercepted by Soviet Forces when she on the way to the scrapyard...
but some said she isn't scrap, but sold out in Japan and become a merchant vessel (?)
oh yeah, Lionel Crabbe is dissapear in 1956 when he was inspecting the ship in Portsmouth harbor
Rifly Afriadhi well i just see in internet XD but i just see in internet irian speed is so random some say 32 another 35 last 48 please tell me what is the real speed XD
KRI Fleet All Sverdlov-Class Cruisers speed is 32.5 Knot..
for info, Sverdlov-Class Cruisers is the last cruiser class with conventional design (common world war 2 warships), after Sverdlov, the Kynda-class is using the modern design of any warships...
Well R.I.P Sverdlov class
THEY MET THEIR ENEMIES FACE-TO-FACE. this ship never fought in battle.
i would like more cold war era ships to be here. I really like the distinct look of the 70's era Soviet ships. also maybe do a piece on the small soviet river gunboats used in ww2?
WEll, the good things about these bias towards russians is that we get to know ships we wouldnt otherwise know much about...
What is biased? This ship exists and now it is museum in Novorosiysk.
Keep them coming.
well I found the fact it had the special primary rounds it could fire that were anti aircraft very cool thats the fact I liked the most so far, but i am still watching
Do the USS Enterprise CV-6, the most decorated ship in WWII. She had her own show made for her, she was so awesome. The only ship in the pacific to survive the entire war.
Then when you do her you should do her big sister USS Enterprise CVN-65, the first nuclear powerful aircraft ever, and still the longest naval vessel ever built.
I'm American but these games got me used to comparing ship stats in terms of metric measurements, but now this video throws inches at me. Had to go to google to convert inches to millimeters to see how it stacks up lol.
I use mainly imperial but I have to admit imperial sucks satins balls
+Saladin1187 i'll throw some inches at you
25.4mm for every inch, you're welcome
If you want to do a naval legend on this type of ship cover KRI Irian (russian name: Ordzhonikidze) because has been Indonesian Flagship. Fought in "operation trikora" against the Netherlands. And this ship also the one who make their Naval forces scared even their aircraft carrier (/helicopter carrier it's fairly small carrier) and it's a legend because nobody knew exactly where that ship gone.. (I'll gonna post in the forum)
*class
Premium Kutuzov clone for Pan-Asia, anyone?
Septian ernanto7 well that right irian has been command to hunt netherland aircraft carrier (karel doorman) but well irian never found karel doorman irian main battery has 3x3 152 mm secondary battery has 6x2 100 mm anti aircraft gun 37 mm has 100 mm belt armor 50 mm deck armor 150 mm armor but speed is still mystery some say 32,5 some 35 and 48 knot and irian story litte bit dark 1 irian sink because no one help irian 2 irian has caught by russian (maybe little bit make sense maybe irian has be change to sverdlov angain for put to museum and if that true you checky little rat russian 3 irian has been sell to rusian or america irian legend because ever face iowa but irian is light cruiser but iowa wont sunk irian are iowa fear? (please tell me) because eroupe and america fear about irian that why america use soeharto so no one help irian even soeharto just let america robbing iran jaya resource i dont want mocking america but i see in the internet and people chat and yeah irian ever disapear and no one know it that make eroupe and america more worry about irian AND Yeah I Not Mocking America Or Eroupe so Dont Get triger because i just see in the internet and comment okay
RedXlV i think irian is doing all of that because he ever disapear and no one know about it karel doorman retreat because irian iowa well.. dont know even iowa cannot sunk irian (lol) please tell me if i wrong
russian say sverdlov class is last ship and sverdlov has been sell to indonesian but why the F#ck he had another one
. she did nothing in reality but she is a fire demon in the game
that makes her a legend
I can't wait for the Zevenprovinciën-class cruiser!
Only 2 navy in world have this cruiser, USSR and Indonesia
Ex ordhnokondzie that became KRI Irian serve during Trikora campaign
She brought to indonesia during Sukarno era but unfortunately it short service time until 1970s last engagmet in Timor leste support Indonesia landing (invasion maybe some foreigner said) and after that it scarpped in Taiwan
(Other source said it taken back by soviet)
In 1970s indonesia has bitter relation with eastern block
1:29 --> 1:53 that guy didn't blink an eye once.... SOVIET CYBORG
what a glory, without naval fight...
when the heck will they do USS Enterprise (CV-6)
We need it
+matt yu Yeah, that's bugging me too...
Pls wargaming, do a USS Enterprise CV-6 video
USS Enterprise CV-6 was scrapped after the end of WWII so there is no ship for them to do a video on anymore
but they did a yamato video even though it's at the bottom at the sea using models from the museum, maybe they can do the same here
At least this ship exists.
best looking ship in game
I'm kind of surprised that integrating armor into the actual structure of the ship was considered a technological innovation that late into the century, it seems logical to use armor to build the outside of the ship if your going to armor it at all. Did they just go ahead and essentially build another hull directly onto the structure they wanted armored before?
very nice design.
Finaly a battleship that I can see
waiting for shimakaze. love iowa and yamato vids o.o)b
And against Aircraft it would have been but ANOTHER Target and SUNK like Bismark, Tirpitz, Hood, Yamato, and Musashi.
I wonder where the ~7000 tons of extra displacement this ship had more than the Cleveland class (seemed like the most natural comparison) went... Armament seems very similar, so does Armour, the Cleves were just as fast and had much greater operational range...
+snorri0411 Im guessing that all the post-war radar equipment they added and the unmentioned torpedo tubes probably contributed to the extra displacement.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sverdlov-class_cruiser
Most treaty cruisers (and most treaty warships for that matter) were designed overfilled and overcrowded. An extreme example was the South Dakota class, so crowded was this class that after the war they were mothballed earlier than its predecessor. After the expiration of naval control treaties, most warships of major navies steadily ballooned in displacements despite only marginal increase of armaments (mostly AA guns).
+Hui Jiang Cleveland was designed after treaty but it was still heavily influenced by its treaty predecessor St.Louis, same as South Dakota. An better analogue were British 6in cruisers, which progressively got heavier during the war despite no increase of main armaments.
Hey guys, when you translate this to english... The caliber of the guns doesn't change to inches. We still use imperial, or metric for that.
*hears Project 68*
Ok the next one is gonna be Project 69 isn't it?
*hears Project 68K*
Ok, sure, but the next one is Project 69, right?
*Project 68bis*
...
The designers just had to be that guy.
Project 69, Kutuzov's pre war big sister
Project 69 was the Kronshadt-class cruiser's designation.
this must be a re upload, I watched this about an hour ago and it was only published 15 mins ago
When do we get the USS Johnson?
when do we get it
You guys should make a video of the USS Midway for a naval legend. It was the largest ship for the first 10 years of it's life, it was the first to launch a rocket off a ship, and was so good it was used in service for 47 years. I believe it is pretty worthy of the title.
+Lukas Kissell "it was the first to launch a rocket off a ship"
Of course, the German rocket V-2. Ops!)
+ChaosCrash13 It was a test to see if it could be done. which they did succeed.
Excuses such excuses)Lukas Kissell
+ChaosCrash13 whats your problem with it
My? It's your problem)
Lukas Kissell
one ship that could use a heal now
so when will we see USS Iowa 1980's mod and the guided missile warships?
They should do an episode on a submarine
BEST CRUISER
Jeez the main belt armor seems a bit dangerously low.
3:23 that dancing duck
The most legendary about this ship is by who this ship was called by
You can tell Wargaming misses the U.S.S.R. lol
Easy metric reference for you guys, since apparently somewhere out there they use a US standard... Not on NA Server. OK, so for those of you who don't know, the metric system is based off 1-10-100 etc.
[ONE INCH = 25.4mm] ,
[a half inch (.5) is 12.7mm.]
[A 127mm is 5 inches]
A 254mm is 10 inches.
So a 57mm is a 5.7cm. A 127mm is 12.7cm, going the other way. 203mm is 8" 152mm is 6" ("Heavy" cruiser vs. "Light" cruiser, at least as far as the Washington Naval Treaty is concerned. The Germans.... How do I say this... Well they just didn't give a shit after awhile, but the ships had been designed within treaty boundaries, with easily upgradable weapons and equipment. This is what accounts for the oddly proportioned ships, like the massive turrets on Konigsberg, and Hitler never intended to fight surface to surface fleet battles, the majority of Kriegsmarine vessels were designed to operate in solitude far from European waters.
I am not sure why this ship was included, as it was designed and built after WW II. If you wanted to do a piece on really powerful light cruiser, then you should do a video on the American Worchester class, Worchester & Roanake (CL144,145). This ship palls by comparison.
indonesia have that crusier from soviet
Why not make a Naval Legends about the Peruvian/Chilean Ironclad Huscar?
She was built in a British shipyard famous for constructing the "Liard Rams" for the US Confederacy. When the ship was launched in 1866, she had neither large guns, heavy armor, nor a hefty displacement. (1,800 tons, 219' long, 12 knots max. speed, 1,650 Hp., 2"-4" armor belt, 7" turret armor, 2 x 10" main cannons) She spent the first 25 years of her career constantly locked in combat. She fought in two separate Civil Wars, battled a river monitor from the American Civil War in 1879, dueled inconclusively with two wooden British warships in 1877, and managed to get captured by Chile during the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). She was still an active part of the Chilean Navy well into the 1900's, being listed as a coast defense ship "Jane's Fighting Ships" as late as 1949. Even thought the ship is now well over 150 years old, she is still actively commissioned and is surprisingly seaworthy. (she survived the 2010 Chilean tsunami with little to no damage) The ancient Ironclad is now one of very few surviving vessels of her type, and as such is a highly prized museum ship for her country.
Think about it Wargaming; her career is a story of the ages, yet she is very little known.
I am currently dumbfounded that this unworthy Soviet cruiser has been given a Naval Legend video before the HMS Hood.
+Philip Cheyne it was uploaded ab hour before this video on the wargaming europ channels😉
US had battleships that went faster than this light cruiser, so how exactly is 32 knots fast?
Smaller ships are usually slower even today most cruisers and frigates are slower then the CV. For a cruiser 32knt is actually quite fast. US battleships were designed specifically to escort aircraft carriers.
Navy guys find the 6"/152mm gun to be on the "small side", must be nice!!!?
The absolute largest gun we had, was our CAS, and its AC130! Single 4.1"/105mm. Also had a 40mm and its M61-20mm.
even land based 152mm guns are rather small compared to naval ones^^
Please do bismarck class (tirpitz)
we need USS North Carolina!!
nice
At 3:20 you can see something in the water, looks to be a duck
Beautiful ship, but this cold war cruiser has comparable stats to a pre-war Edinburgh Class cruiser.
does anyone know the name of the audio track between 1:55 and 2:50
Maximal
I want to know about Kassin class ship history
За Родину! Для Михаил Кутузов!
What is the music from 3:20 to 4:40 ?
Its nice music
Please do bismarck and it's sistership tirpitz
Is this a new Ship?
the sverdlov class cruisers
So maybe this ship will be in the new Russian cruiser line?
I think mikhail sell to indonesia to be KRI Irian
Ordjonikidze was.
Just putting myself in the role of her Captain, not too sure I would cotton to the idea of the Charge man's exercise. I get that you drill constantly so you run the least risk of actually dropping a shell in combat. However, tossing 70 lbs. of metal at each other just has 'bad idea' written on it. Do it long enough and someone is bound to get a broken bone or three, possibly even worse. Now I got to explain to my boss why one of my Sailors is in the infirmary, or even worse; having to write the kid's parents explaining what happened to their son. There has to be a better object they could use, like a medicine ball.
She's not exactly a looker, but I always like a cruiser with 4 turrets of 3 guns each. And being a Russian game - and this ship being *post*-WW2 - this ship will probably beat the pants off even the Cleveland.
+Saladin1187 Wargaming isnt russian..
+thefaller01 Hm I keep seeing everyone say they are a Russian company. Just looked it up and apparently they are based in Cyprus, and it was started by a Belarusian guy?
I have to admit that if there is no bias it seems odd of them to include a ship like the Kutuzov which was post-war, unremarkable specs, and no combat in its career, as a Naval Legend, or why they would add Russian ships to the game prior to more iconic and renowned navies like the UK (And no, I'm not British btw).
There's sort of bias in the way they lure the russian customer to play their games, and make their profit through them. That's how it worked in WoT, and that's how it will work with WoWS aswell.
The UK excuse they came up with was that not much british players are that interested in naval games, so despite being a renowned navy, it wouldnt attract the UK market. Either that's true or not, i'd rather play a king george V or a Dido Class or the Hood (although i amost certainly bet this will be a prem ship between 4-7) than play some russian destroyer i never heard of...
+thefaller01 Yeah I think they make the mistake of believing that everyone only cares about playing ships from their own country. Personally I have been excited for German and British ships although I am American (and I barely play any American ships in WOWS). And on the internet I see more people requesting British ships (mainly BBs) than any other nation and line.
I can understand why Wargaming wants to make the decisions that are going to profit them most. That's understandable. But I didn't know there was a huge player base in Russia. I'd expect Britain to be more full of gamers. Plus, staff MUST have noticed the crazy levels of interest in UK BBs on their forums and social media, so idk what they are thinking.
+Saladin1187 Not the Des Moines.
Russians: We have new cruiser. Throw it at storm. See what happens.
Ship: *Finds big storm. Suffers Damage*
Russians: *Suprised Pikachu face*
kinda looks like a Cleveland Class Cruiser
It almost looks like a battleship. Do you guys agree?
I hope that wargaming are working on the Super Yamato because that's the real rival for the montana, I'll be waiting :'3
+Cleverer Alonso That would be for the H-series or a bigger, upgraded Montana. The Yamato is about equal to the Montana.
This aged well.
Can someone give us the name of the soundtrack at 3:18 ?
+Ján Korpala future war by gothic storm
+Jasper Chua Thank you
How i get this ship??
Italian ships ?? DURING WW2 THE ITALIAN FLEET WAS THE 4th of the WORLD!!! Add italian battleships Roma,Vittorio Veneto,Caio Duilio !!!!
Matteoseee they had no fuel and did nothing
Isn't it US, British, Japan, Germany, France, then Italy?
@@user-lf8qu9un8y the currect order was: British, Japanese, American (all 3 were almost equal) then the Italian, then the french baguette
OOOHHH another exciting ship story. What did this one do? Must be great to be called a legend..
1) was built after the world wars
2) didn't capsize
3) went on 15 vacations (sorry, cruises)
4) sat in a port looking pretty while it *didn't* come under air attack
5) retired
I want my 15 minutes and 28 seconds back.
+Midnight Shamalan
One of these cruises was to Cuba. In 1962)
find it funny that for the US ships they use metric but English for Russian
Just throwing shells to each other for workout
that should be the tier x premium of the soviets in the game.
Yessss
Yessss
+Chris R yess
its only tier 8 :(
one of this Sverdlov Class battleshipbeing commissioned by Indonesia Navy with name of ' KRI IRIAN ' from early 1960's, and ended by being scrap in early 1970's (sorry if im wrong)
looks like a sleeker cleveland
Great to learn about the ship, however why would this ship be classed as a "Naval Legend"? Maybe there could be a video series showcasing less famous ships that would not be classed as a "Naval Legends"?
+NaitNait It's a naval legend by Russian standards because Russia didn't have anything else. Their naval history was underwhelming.
+NaitNait
Hey it didnt get its butt kicked bij the japanese navy, so thats a start
+NaitNait 1962)
