Nice! It's cool to see this one get covered. I like the bilingual city labels as well. I actually didn't know that Korea and China refused support from the Jurchens, so that was interesting.
A couple points about the city labels, though--the suffix -시 wasn't added to Korean city names until modern times, and Busan was called Dongnae County (동래군) back then. Also, the city you labeled as Cheongju is actually Jeonju (Cheongju is further up northeast).

Toyotomi Hideyoshi forced the invasion, but there were no samurai at the time who could defy him as he had become the ruler of Japan. The war also left a strong dissatisfaction among the samurai because of the unnecessary sacrifices they had to make. In particular, the feudal lords of eastern Japan, who had only followed Hideyoshi in form, were deeply dissatisfied in their hearts. This was especially true in northern Japan, where Hideyoshi's forces thoroughly annihilated the daimyo and farmers of the northern region who resisted the invasion.
After Hideyoshi's death, many daimyo switched sides to Tokugawa Ieyasu. This became an opportunity for Tokugawa Ieyasu to unify Japan after Hideyoshi's death.
Hideyoshi was a brilliant warrior in his youth, but in his old age, his behavior was marked by his personal feelings.

    • @こんにちは-h8n
      @こんにちは-h8n Год назад +13

No, Hideyoshi originally served a great busho (Japanese military commander) called Nobunaga Oda. And Nobunaga Oda's dream was to unify Japan, and after that, to make the world safe, such as the unification of Asia. However, Nobunaga Oda was assassinated by his vassals
That's why Hideyoshi, who took over Nobunaga's will, tried to attack the world. The first step was China. In attacking China, I tried to cooperate with Korea, but Korea refused. So Hideyoshi thought about attacking Korea and taking the Korean Peninsula first.

This, ampered by the fact that China was a long Lost dream of Oda Nobunaga, and the need of spending the daimyos resources, led to the invasion. But ultimately, Hideyoshi invaded (and re-invaded) because of his ambition. Its well known How furious he was after Yukinaga Konishi deceived him in the peace agreenents: he wanted large chuncks of Korea, and even a daughter of Chinese emperor as Wife. Fascinating video! The Japanese Invasions of Korea are also interesting because they are one of three major agarian state versus agarian state conflicts (Joseon Korea + Ming China versus Toyotomi's Japan) in pre-modern East Asian history, the others being the Goguryeo-Tang Wars (the Korean Kingdom of Silla + Tang Chinese Empire versus Yamato Japan + the Korean Empire of Goguryeo + Korean Kingdom of Baekje + The Mohe/Jurchen Tribes) that were literally 900 years before this (640s-660s AD) and the other was the Manchu Conquest of the Ming (surprisingly the Manchus were sedentary-ish). All other major wars in East Asian History were either 1v1 between agarian states or between agarian versus nomadic (think Mongol Invasions). After this war and the Qing Conquest of the Ming, until the 1890s agarian states would rarely fight each other.
Insane to think that large-scale agarian state conflicts in East Asia only happened three times in nearly two thousand years, whereas in Europe three times in half a century would be considered "peaceful" lmao

It would have been much harder and taken a lot longer, sure, but the Japanese only really managed to maintain (as opposed to just gain) control over the larger settlements and fortifications they conquered in Korea. The issue was that the Japanese assumed Korean and Chinese civilians would act like the typical Sengoku Jidai peasant and just accept new management over the whole area once a centre of power (a castle, a city, etc) in the area was captured, when the reality was that would never happen (because Joseon Korea and Ming China were unified nations with long-established central governments, instead of being split into numerous smaller polities that frequently gained or lost land). Because of this the Japanese had no real way of preparing for revolts and uprisings in Korean provinces they’d taken over. That meant the only way they could get any food or supplies from the territories they’d conquered was by brute force, when their plan required the Koreans (and later the Chinese) to just accept defeat and provide for their new Japanese overlords
Combined with the sea route being cut off, the Japanese would have had to withdraw for lack of food and supplies eventually.

First, I was surprised that the Koreans were not grateful for the reinforcements from the Ming.
I was also surprised that they thought that the Korean army alone was able to evacuate the Japanese army.
Without reinforcements from Ming, the Japanese army that occupied Seoul and Pyongyang would have captured the Korean king and forced him to surrender. By the way, the Korean prince was captured.
Koreans tend to interpret history in a way that suits them. They would have been forced to surrender before a naval blockade could be implemented. Moreover, Yi Sun-shin's naval blockade was insufficient.
Many craftsmen crossed the sea to build Japanese-style castles. Japanese-style castle ruins still exist around Busan today.
These castle ruins prove that the naval blockade was insufficient.

    - When the Japanese invaded, Korea lost every single open Battle & All 3 Korean Army got wiped out as a result.
    - 95% of Korean Garrison commanders who managed to win skirmishes were punished severely by the Korean gov(Including Admiral Yi)
    - When Admiral Yi got replaced, Korea lost every single ship in a single battle - Leaving just dozen ship to Yi when he returned.
    - Nowadays, Koreans claim Korea beat the Hideyoshi's second invasion on their own, but Ming did 90% of the Actual Fighting.
(Korea lost its entire army - they barely managed to raise a single small army to help the Chinese offensive)

There is a misconception that the Imjin War was won by Ming forces alone on land, but this is not the case. Summary of battle statistics throughout the Imjin War/Jeong Yujae Invasion.
During the 1592 Japanese Invasion of Korea, there were about 105 large and small battles.
Of these, the Chosun Army was much more aggressive, with 68 "offensive" and 37 "defenses". The Joseon Army showed off its superiority with a record of 65 wins and 40 losses.
According to these statistics, it seems that the Joseon army took the lead in the battle.
At the beginning of the war, they easily conquered Pyongyang. But. The supply was cut off and the offensive stopped.
Since then, there have been many unilateral attacks by the Korean army.
The Ming army fought in only 8 out of 105 battles in 7 years. Of course, the direct large-scale battle was led by the Ming Dynasty, but even that was almost in the form of an allied force with the Joseon army.
The last "2nd Battle of Pyongyang Castle" was the only battle in which the Ming dynasty fought and won properly. Even after that victory, he was passive because of the defeat in the Battle of Byeokjegwan. The reason why the Japanese army changed from 'offensive' to 'defense'.
This is because the Joseon naval forces, government forces, and voluntary soldiers all joined forces to block supply routes throughout Joseon. This was the result of attrition and guerrilla warfare continued by the Joseon army alone.
This is because of the topographical characteristics of the entire Joseon dynasty at that time consisting of 'river/stream/mountain'. When shipping is blocked, parts that cannot be supplied are a big factor.
This is because it was difficult to procure goods locally from private houses in various parts of Joseon. And the biggest thing is that there was so much suffocation/starvation that they eventually gave up going north and built a fortress on the south coast and turned to defense. (Only within the Japanese Naval Control Area)
Did the Ming army defeat the Japanese in 8 battles?
And the total mobilization force of Korea, China and Japan at that time was 160,000 in Japan (Imjin year), 140,000 in Jeongyu year / 180,000 Joseon Dynasty / 220,000 Ming Dynasty.
In any case, it was almost impossible for Japan, which was a feudal state at the time, to control centralized Joseon with local administration.

I made a lot of videos related to Yi Sun-sin in Korean dramas/movies, so people overseas know about Yi Sun-sin well.
At that time, there were many excellent commanders in the army rather than the navy, such as Jeonggi-ryong/黃進/權慄/郭再祐/宣居怡/韓明璉, etc. in the Joseon Army.
Starting with the active role in Jeonggi-ryong, the cavalry of the Joseon Army were armed with flails as a basic supply,
Ever since I gained confidence in my weapon
Japanese troops were unilaterally massacred on land.
In large-scale battles, Joseon was unilaterally defeated by Japan in tactics because the general peasant soldiers (conscripts) were weak at the time.
Generally, in small-scale guerrilla warfare led by Korean regular troops, they overpowered the Japanese.
In Joseon's uninhabited (professional soldiers), the individual strength of the martial arts overwhelms the samurai.
During the Imjin War/Jeong Yujae Invasion, Japanese "daimyo" were hiding behind enemy lines, and when looking at the records at the time, all Joseon generals fought at the vanguard in battle (Jeong Ki-ryong/宣居怡/韓明璉/黃進/申砬)
It can be seen that the martial arts were relatively superior to the bubble novel Three Kingdoms in China (Guan Yu, 張飛, Zhao Zilong).
At that time, the famous Chinese general "Lee Yeosong" was passive throughout the war after losing the Battle of Byeokjegwan.

Otherwise in Japan it's also called the "Seven years war" because it lasted 7 years. (1592-1599)

The Battle of Noryang was a pursuit battle for Korea and Ming, but for Toyotomi's forces, it was part of the rescue operation of Yukinaga Konishi. Just prior to this battle, he was forced to retreat to Suncheonseong Castle. Knowing this, the Toyotomi forces in Geoje Island advanced their fleet toward Suncheon, and the allied forces attempted to intercept them in this naval battle. The Toyotomi forces suffered heavy losses, especially the Shimazu forces, but there were no casualties among the commanding officers (Daimyos), which was in contrast to the allied forces that lost many commanding officers led by Yi Sun-sin, even though they were the pursuers. As a result, the Allied forces could no longer maintain the blockade of the sea, and Konishi successfully retreated to Geoje Island. In any case, this battle broke out under the circumstances where Toyotomi's forces had decided to withdraw and a peace agreement was being concluded between the upper echelons of both countries, so the impact of the battle on the larger picture was minimal. The main concern in Japan at this time was who would be the next ruler of Japan (Tenka-Bito), and this confusion would lead to the Battle of Sekigahara two years later.

In Korea, there is an absurd historical view that world history has despised Korea, whether it is East Asian history or Western history, or even the ancient Korean history itself, modern Korea believes that history needs to serve the will of the people, that is, Korean history needs to let the people Proud, but this contradicts the ancient history recorded by China, Japan and itself, leading to historical jokes and cultural appropriation that has been staged in Korea, such as stealing Chinese murals and Japanese Buddha statues to deduce Korea's ancient history and culture, For example, Korean dramas have replaced archaeological and historical records as historical evidence

So nice and thank to this work from korea but i want to make something to correct,
    here's one: "Cheongju(청주)" should fix to "Jeonju(전주)".
0:15 As you see, Joseon was failed with main troop, controlled by General Shin rib, and lost almost of cavalry, their basis of army.
This battle happend at "Chungju(충주)", similar pronounced with Cheongju(청주). These two are main cities in Chungcheong Province, east-southern from Seoul, center part of S.korea nowadays.
King of Joseon decided to run for north at this time.
By the way, "Jeonju(전주)"-which is written "Cheongju" in video, quite meaning city to Joseon's army because they got first win in big battle called battle of ichi(이치전투) at this place!
This West-southern area is very strategic, called Jeolla Province. It has field enough for agriculture and naval base of Yi soon shin's fleet was this area.
PS. Land of Korea is 70% mountains especailly east and north side. Even Seoul is in the ring of mountains. Almoast fields are southern west.
PS. in name of cities, "-ju(주)" same meaning "-si(시)" means city/town. "ju" is used by ancient one, "si" is modern one.
