- Crabbing the oregon coast for catch and cook dungeness crab with crab snares from shore. I'm crabbing Netarts bay Oregon for Red Rock Crab and Dungeness Crab. This is my first time crab fishing from shore with a crab snare, usually i am out on a boat and throwing crab pots. For my first time crabbing this way i just wanted to get out, get the rod setup for crabbing, and figure out the technique. If you have any tips for me PLEASE feel free to leave them in the comments section.
I plan on trying to get back out here asap with my kayak so i can throw some crab pots and increase my chances of catching red rock or Dungeness as well as the chance of a bigger load of crab!
As of the timing of this video, it is Feb 3rd 2021 and our "Prime" months of crabbing on the Oregon coast have just come to an end. September, October, November and December are typically the peak times for big, meat filled crab.
This catch and cook dungeness crab was absolutely delicious! I think crab tastes even better when you have just pulled it fresh from the ocean yourself.

Love the videos, been watching for the last year or so, trying to learn steelhead. Been on the Wilson more times I can count this winter, still no luck yet, maybe this weekend.
My crabbing tips: build your own snares. Those Danielson snares are ok, but the loops are sub-optimal, and the cages are bigger than they need to be. I really like this guy's design: ruclips.net/video/81Qu2AgE_-8/видео.html
Let your bait soak for 8 minutes. You might get some sooner, but if you leave it a few minutes more, it's not rare to get a double or even triple in one cast if the crabbing is good that day.
For bait, lots of folks use chicken, but I've never had good success with it. Squid works, but I prefer an oily fish. Shad, Sardine, Herring, etc. Anything that's super oily/stinky and will make that scent trail for the crabs to follow to your bait.
Slack High tide is best, but low tide can sometimes be productive, depending on the tide exchange. Freshwater coming out of the rivers/bays will chase the crabs out or make them hunker down and ignore your bait.
Other biggest thing is using the right amount of lead, anywhere between 2-8oz, usually 4/6 is fine. If your snare drifts at all, you need more. Pyramid sinkers are fine, but I really like the "claw" style sinkers, they seem to dig in to the sand a little better, let's you get away with a little less lead sometimes. You want your snare to sit where you cast it, crabs don't like chasing bait.

@@AnglingAddictsPNW I can't take the credit for the knowledge, I actually only started crabbing this past year. Someone was kind enough to pass this formula on to me, and other than a few false starts with snare designs, it's worked perfectly. Easy 2-3hr limits most times I've been out as long as the tides and weather cooperates. It's nice to be able to get my share of crab w/o owning a boat or paying someone else that does.

Great to see you have success with those snare traps! I’ve lost many throught the years but never caught a crab with them. The last few years I’ve been using these folding style traps. I have my best luck with those even on the docks. If you can find the smaller ones they are easier to cast. The bigger ones need a hand line. You can find them at cabelas and I think most sportsman stores that carry crab gear. Love your videos! Keep up the good work man.
I’ve seen those folding ones, looks like it’s be effective. I’m glad you clarified the hand line. When I saw them I was thinking “ how the heck are you supposed to cast that” lol makes sense now. I usually just throw crab pots from my kayak

Love crabbing that bay. Have done really well from the small boat we rented our first year. Since then it’s a great day spot as you did, I usually go down the road along the bay and find a pull off and setup just past the rocks using rod and hand traps.. another cool video brother as you said 1 is better than none!

That was delicious. This was one of the first times I’ve had crab that wasn’t cooked while in its shell. You definitely lose a little of the extra flavor and saltiness this way

There are a few areas on the coast where I’ve had crab all over the place while I was fishing for surfperch. I will have to see if I can get some in a snare :)

Great video, one of the best feelings ever when you catch that first crab on a snare. I learned something from ya regarding ice bath after cooking the crab, I will definitely do that when I catch one & cook the 🦀 at home. 👍's up.
Thank You, i wouldn't have thought it would be so exciting but the obvious difference in feeling between an empty snare and one with resistance is pretty sweet. I look forward to getting out and doing this more. That ice makes a huge difference!
@@AnglingAddictsPNW Ur welcome, if you ever decide to add ur own loops, I would recommend Craftsman 85609 Line Trimmer Cutting Line, 0.065, cut at 15inches length, form to hoops, I squeeze in 1/16 size crimps & 1/16 hour glass size crimps, too. I think it's more effective when bringing up the crabs and less crabs lost in the process 👍

We do this a lot and if you hold the pole you can feel when they are on it and bumping it around. It’s fun, kids love it.
Lol I always hated when I was out fishing for surfperch and would feel that tapping, knowing there was a crab messing with my bait. They are fun to catch though. I’m sure the kids would have a blast with it!

Never had much luck with those things but the bigger crab hawks work well and you can really launch those things!
I've heard a lot of good things about those. I will have to give them a shot.. It's not often that i crab from shore. I usually just drop a couple pots from my kayak.... and it's a lot of fun haha

i can't believe this is the first time i've crabbed at all this season.. i love being able to get out and catch a few, beats the price of buying or ordering them.. and always more satisfying knowing it was your work that put dinner on the table... go get some!!

Thank you! Oh man those rivers should be prime right now. They were on the drop after that heavy rain. It was hard to drive by without stopping. I think I will have to spend a little time making a few casts in passing when I head back that way next week. Good luck!! Let me know how it goes. This place is pretty nice. I look forward to getting back out with the kayak and a couple pots. I was thinking about paddling across the bay to the peninsula and spending the day out there.
@@AnglingAddictsPNW I go out there quite often with my pots and my Hobie Kayak. The peddle drive makes it super easy to set and pull pots. If you do start from the boat ramp I recommend going along the road and dropping your pots between that and the sandbar. The current isn’t too strong there and it’ll be easier for you to get around in a kayak. Love the vids man!

I usually don’t really start hitting the coast this early but with the slow steelhead fishing and me just wanting to go have fun, I had to do something... and I gotta say, these last few videos and experiences have been pretty sweet. I foraged Sea snails, limpets, and a couple mussels on my last day down there. I would have never thought snails would taste so damn good.

Thanks for the sub. I will definitely check those snares out. I usually just drop pots from my kayak, it’s more effective but I enjoyed targeting this way for sure. Leaving tomorrow morning for the coast with 6 traps in the back of my truck and fresh jetty rockfish gear. Going to try the snag resistant swim bait and worm sinker that was in your 7 best setups video. Also have a number of the P-line multi-fly setups that should be fun.

@@AnglingAddictsPNW Had 10-20' swells on Saturday so it was pretty tough to get anywhere close to the water. Wasn't worth taking a fall. Sunday still had some pretty good swells but did hook into a couple. One popped off right away but the other pulled a bunch of line then shaved me off in the rocks, assuming it was a ling. Used the worm sliding weight above motor oil and black swim baits. Did hang up a couple times but much easier to fish than the traditional weighted jighead and grub.
Beautiful weather but just too big of swells. Looking forward to catching a calm day and giving it another try. Caught enough crab to snack on and share with friends at home.
crab snaring is a super fun alternative to dock crabbing. when i use squid i wrap it in mesh from the fabric store. otherwise the crabs will just pull the squid out through the box. My first day snaring at Fort Stephens south jetty, i lost a Dungeness that HUGE like a 12" monster. A lot of people think you have to snare off the rocks but in truth, try this from the beach, you'll be surprised. also you can fish and crab snare. One rod can be set up for crab and while it is sitting you can fish with a second rod. I use Herring or Shad mostly. oh and i wire a 3Oz coin sinker into the bottom of the box to help keep it from being moved around by the tide ;) ...be ready to lose gear and attach your crab gauge to your tackle bag with a lanyard unless you like losing it in the jetty.
I love Netarts Bay. Come on down to the Siletz Bay and Lincoln City sometime.
Netarts is a pretty cool little place. I’m usually up north a bit more but I think this will be the year that I start making my way south and hitting more areas

I’ve always just thrown crab pots. It was pretty fun to do it this way. Perfect if you are just looking to catch a crab or two. Get your license and get out there! 🦀

Loved your recent video on barnacles too. You ever thought about doing sea snails? I know theyre out there but I don't know anyone who's caught them before. I think they are delicious tho. Esp with some citronella and lemongrass. Yum!
Happy camp down towards the mouth is also a popular spot I’ve also had better luck at low and first half of the incoming tide from the banks
At 10:00 in you can see happy camp beach I also use crab hawk not sure if they sell any local I usually pick mine up at ace hardware in Lincoln city

Angling Addicts PNW there is a cove on the opposite side of the bay that is good crabbing and calming in sand be careful that bay can be very dangerous towards the mouth

another great video.....tighten your drag to the max and reel reel reel, less chance of losing crab on the snares
hahaha i felt so stupid when i realized my drag was still loose. Makes perfect sense why it has to be super tight and why your reeling has to be fast and consistent. With the way those snares are setup, i could see how easy it'd be to lose crabs when you slow down, hesitate, or stop.. I'm surprised this one was still on after all of that... thanks for the feedback!
I just saw some people doing this at Netarts and was wondering how the heck they did it. Might invest in this cause my wife loves crab!
I had a blast doing it! If the wife loves crab, i'd highly recommend looking into it. I'm sure i will be doing a lot more of this. I think i'm going to try throwing a crab pot or two from the kayak one of these times.. we've always done well with the red rock crab out there... Good luck!

I haven’t made it down there in a while. I did try walking the beach at night and was surprised to not see any. I almost always do. Lol so much easier to just go pick them up off the beach... and fun to do at night
I think the time of year has an effect on it, tides during the year and such
When you boil or steam seafood( crab,shrimp, etc..) boil it in salt water,I dont know why but it makes it taste even better

I like the torpedo snares. Use less bait and more aerodynamic for a longer cast. Buy them off of the dock in Pacifica.

Awesome video man!! It seems pretty calm today to with all the rain thats been happening. I love snaring I just wish there were more dungies at barview but in nehalem there are dungies so that good I guess, but im pretty sure everybody is asking this but when is your next steelie adventure happening!. But ya steelhead is slow right now but Its been decent for me I have had a few hookups and one spawed out one landed on the wilson.
thanks man, it was crazy rainy and windy the day before this. This day was dang near perfect... I've had good luck in all the bays from a boat but being new to snaring, this will be interesting and fun to figure out. I have thrown a few casts on the wilson in passing and spent a couple hours on the sandy but haven't really been putting in the time this season.... it doesn't help that i already have too much salmon and steelhead in the freezer lol.. Glad to know someone is catching a few fish.. hopefully i can put in a little time before the season is over... Good luck man
@@AnglingAddictsPNW Ya the Sandy and the Clack haven't been doing to good I have been out a little bit over 6-7 times this year on the clack and sandy and haven't really gotten much actions. But on one of the streams flowing into the clack I hooked a 7 lb but lost it and caught a few smolts, but I understand that you have a lot of fish lol but still exited for your next adventure!!!!
Take those needle nose pliers and pull a bit of bait through the trap for a more enticing lure

I was doing them on the website for a bit when I stopped putting out videos. Simple answer, No. that’s a hard one to keep up with with all the things I have going on. I know it was helping out a lot of people. I will figure something out.. would probably just be on the website again, not RUclips

Yummy to the tummy. In my opinion red rock and pacific rock crab are a little sweeter than Dungeness but you definitely don’t get as much meat out of them. Look into a crab hawk. I have been using those for years off the jetty’s and are way better then the snares.
I absolutely love red rock, just more work for less meat, but what you do get is delicious 🤤 I will look into the crab hawk.. anything that ups the game and chances of catching some crab. Thanks for the info

What type of rod and line are you using for that snare?
Its a 12ft Okuma Rockaway rod and i was using 30lb since that's what i had on that reel already but i want to bump it up to 50lb since that reel will be primarily used for this type of fishing
What do you look for in a tide for a Getty trip? Swell size ?
Honestly I don’t know enough about it yet to give tips. If I’m fishing the jetty I’m usually just looking for decent weather and I will fish/crab for the hour before the tide change, slack tide, and then the first hour of the tide change. After that the water is basically moving too fast and in my opinion it’s not worth the effort.

I got a snare last year but my 9' might have been too light for it. The darn rod bent in half like I had caught a shark and my daughter was laughing at me for having to climb down the rocks to pull it out of the water by hand. We will try again with a stiffer rod next time, for I had seen a guy with tremendous luck at Barview with a snare.
ya you definitely need something with some backbone to it.. i have plenty of longer salmon and steelhead rods, but they wouldn't be able to handle what's necessary to get your gear out there. The rod i'm using was $99 and for my first time casting a snare, i'd have to say i'm pretty happy with it. Barview can surely have it's good days.. i always see people out there crabbing. i'm looking forward to trying it there too.. Hopefully you can get a stiffer rod and get out there!

The crab is actually still hot. You only throw it in the ice for a minute or less, leave it in too long and it will definitely be cold. I’m all for hot crab meat!
Try using ling cod carcass, for some reason that works better than anything else.

haha, it's funny you say that because not having a legit spot to keep my rods drives me absolutely nuts at night when its time to set in for the night. I'm getting a pretty big rack for the armada so i will have something for them soon...i can't wait

There are a few RUclips’s with different ideas / budget methods for holding rods.
MacGyver’ed my own for a Tucson. Works well for five rigged rods with spinning reels attached.

Lol you get what you pay for. $4.99 from bi-mart. The cables on the snare are way too thick, which obviously doesn’t hold a crab very well. I usually just drop pots from my kayak

If you're not doing cooking and eating them then you're not completing the video for some reason most crabers don't do the cooking and eating parts but most of the fishing videos do.We your viewers want to see you cooking them up in some good recipes and showing in detail how good they really taste why not ❓
