Fun fact: "Liege of Inveracity" is credited for inventing the "slam" genre of death metal. It's only like a 15 second part where it's half time but that is basically what every slam band after it ran with. A few thousand slam records later, it's pretty crazy how 1 tiny part of a song can be so impactful.
@@mickz1829 Yeah, I'd argue Devourment took the ideas of "slam", refined it and made it an official subgenre of death metal, when they released their masterpiece debut.
@@mickz1829I hung out with Internal Bleeding in 93. And Pyrexia and other bands in a private studio. Love those cats , Suffocation was at the top of the food chain but I do like Internals style better. No one use the word slam back then that I know of. To me it’s New York. New York bands have a certain edge, groove or feel. Murphy’s Law, Biohazard, Nuclear Assault, Overkill, Ludichrist, Life of Agony , Carnivore and so on all have a certain element that transcends genres and stands out to me as a New Yorker in clubs from the 80s watching all this. I never heard the word slam, I’m not a big Death Metal fan, to me it’s New York, I can hear and it shows.
In my opinion Despise the Sun is their best. Dave’s drumming was absolutely next level, and influenced how most death metal drummers approached the genre from then on.
The megaphone effect on thrones of blood is a technique Frank is famous for called cupping the mic. He wraps his hands around the ball of the mic completely covering it. He then puts his mouth in the opening where his hands meet creating a natural reverb effect. It makes death growls sound even more inhuman.
Most definitely my favorite band of all time, really shaped the sound of death metal after them. They always kill it live and they're such chill dudes as well.
Most great death metal takes a few listens to sink in, it’s hard to base an accurate assessment on first impressions because the riffs are so dense. Suffo is one of those bands that you have to spend some time with to fully get the whole picture and appreciate.
Thank you so much to my lovely Discord member and Subscriber, THF for all of the song suggestions. With help from my Discord of course ;) Y'all are awesome. What do you think of Suffocation? ❤
I like Human Waste and Effigy of the Forgotten. I like Disgorge and Deeds of Flesh better than later Suffocation. Because they played the early Suffocation style
Oh girl, imagine a post-Soviet student in summer '96, with a k7 of Suffocation '95 / Malevolent Creation '95, riding old rusty bike in the countryside, the speed was tremendious. :)
Loved them in the early 90's. Pioneers of a new style of death metal for me. With short tight guitar & drum blasts, 'spidering' riffs across the guitar, crunchy brutal vocals. Yummy death metal :-)
I remember buying Pierced from Within when it came out on CD from Sam Goody. A 90s teen listening to this was me and it was awesome having this entire world of music and atmosphere where no one else understood it but me and made meeting other fans all the sweeter because there were so few us at the time....I love that I lived thru that!
being a big fan of suffocation since 1994, there are 2 major albums to remember, Effigy of the forgotten which is the album which created the style, brutal death metal because, in any group, there will always be an ingredient that we will find from this album. The album, Pierced from within, is the quintescence of the group in level, technique, vituosity and, all the originality that can be found on this opus.
24:55 that riff is the one that is said to created slam, which is a sub-genre of death metal. Also Slamming Brutal Death Metal and Brutal Death Metal are close. That's why the comments were talking about it. I don't see how that one comment was saying that it was pyrexia and Internal bleeding when the suffocation album came out before them. Pyrexia only had a demo beforehand so I think that guy was cracked out. For slam check out Devourment and for Brutal death Metal check out Gorgasm or Putrid Pile. A good brutal death metal band that unfortunately split up with a female vocalist is Cerebral Bore.
Here's 7 albums you should try out Slaughter to Prevail - Kostolom ABORTED - Global Flatline Cryptopsy - None So Vile Cytotoxin - Radiophobia Mortification - Scrolls of the Megilloth Carcass - Necroticisim Sepultura - Arise
That mystery sound was a shove scooping dirt. I'm from NY seen Suffocation many times, I've never seen a band play as one like them, tightest live performance, perfection. The Pierced from within Album is worth listening to the whole thing, all bangers.
I recommend listening to Pyrexia - Sermon of Mockery album. They’re basically Suffocation jr but it’s top tier brutal death metal from Long Island, New York. Also check out a band called Criminal Element since it features members of Suffocation. Brutal Death Metal bands also worth mentioning: Malignancy - Intrauterine Cannibalism (1999) Skinless - Progression Towards Evil (1998) Dehumanized - Prophecies Foretold (1998) Mortal Decay - Forensic (2002) Disgorge - Consume The Forsaken (2002) Eternal Suffering - Drowning In The Tragedy (1999) Deeds of Flesh - Gradually Melted EP (1995)
Thrones of Blood has two of the most rad breakaways I ever heard in metal. Got to see Suffocation live with Jungle Rot and Exhumed. By god what a show. Terrance Hobbs is a beast and an eminent skullet enthusiast
I like the way she analyzed the Thrones of Blood lyrics. She so nonchalantly said " Oh I get it he wants to kill, oh he killed his woman, I can dig it " That was hilarious
Very cool to see you, not familiar with technical metal music, embrace and pick up a lot of subtleties in the music upon first listens. Keep up the good work! Devils in the details and you have a sharp ear.
grew up listening to black metal, later got introduced to technical death in the form of Suffocation. they had the fasted drummer i ever heard. mike smith
The Death fanboys probably won't like to hear it, but Suffocation easily had more complex songwriting than Death. Most Death songs follow the same simple structure. And Death became less and less heavy over the years. Chuck started to turn his nose up at death metal. Suffocation was always the heavier band, and they never turned their back on it.
hmm id definitely recommend gorguts nostalgia, faceless ones, obscura (those three are in obscura album), colored sands, le toit du monde (from colored sands). this band was as pleasing to me as listening to death for the first time i love your reactions tho
You gotta check out the godfathers of DM, hypocrisy. Peter also produced a lot of the 90s BM albums and has other bands like Pain that are more mainstream.
I recommend checking out Guttural Slug - Hacksaw Surgery or Eye of the Cyclops. Brutal and fun. I'm sure you'll like it considering how accustomed to Slam you've become!
Great video! Suffocation are no doubt the fathers of brutal death metal. Although Frank Mullen retired from the band, he still has a love for death metal and can be seen at the occasional show here on Long Island. Ricky is a great successor, but the true spirit of the band lies with guitarist Terrance Hobbs, the only remaining founding member.
cool to see you digging into the 'behind the scenes' stuff about the bands, albums and labels especially when a lot of people just listen and move on. Your Entombed Left hand Path video was great too.
i notice you love breakdowns and it's called Slam nowadays so i highly recommend you listen and react to band called Devourment and their album called Molesting The Decapitated.
You should check out some of these albums Devourment- Molesting the Decapitated (1999) Cerebral Incubation- Gonorrhea Nodule Mastication (2012) Internal Bleeding -Voracious Contempt (1995) Disgorge- Cranial Impalement (1999) Disavowed- Perceptive Deception (2001) Dehumanized- Prophecies Foretold (1998)
Pity they only suggested songs from those albums. Suffocation have several other albums with much better mixing and production values. They refined their sound more and more as the albums went on. You should revisit Suffocation as the albums after the ones these songs came from are better in some ways. Their new album, "Hymns From The Apocrypha", is among the BEST work they've ever done. For me, from "Pierced from Within" on is when Suffocation really became one of the Death Metal heavyweights of the world.
If you like this, you should check out Defeated Sanity! Absolute top tier bdm. Good tracks include: Self-Inflicted Fatal Disfigurement, Calculated Barbarity, Naraka, Perspectives, Into the Soil and Insecta Incendium.
There really wasn't anything strange about re-recording songs for a new release back then. I can imagine they were unhappy with the recording and/or performance on their debut ep Human Waste and wanted a better recording/performance of their favorites from that and so with the increased budget on the first album Effigy, did just that. Hell, they did this exact thing for years after the terrible recording/production of the 2nd album Breeding the Spawn (which they had far less budget for). They've re-recorded almost the whole album over the years, adding one song from it to each new album (mostly).
@@godetonter4764 Yeah, I personally love it while still wishing it had the recording quality of Effigy. Musically it was an excellent followup to Effigy.

No hate but Suffo are much, much better than Cannibal corpse. Drumming is better, riffs are better, solos are waaay better, and Frank, well, he's a DM icon.
I love Cannibal Corpse, but musically, I’ve always considered them midrange, as far as Death Metal bands go. Bands like Death, Suffocation, Carcass, Entombed, Morbid Angel, Atheist, and even Bolt Thrower, were always more dynamic and technically impressive to me.
