It’s the slam in the song Infecting The Crypts. It was written and recorded a couple of years before Liege Of Inveracity. Not to mention the Infecting slam riff is a Slayer riff from a song called Crypts Of Eternity. Look it up.
@@fredsmith5925 I will after I get off of work. I used to think Kurt Cobain made one of the first slams but it wasn't death metal obviously. It was the song ' My Family ' in his old Fecal Matter project.. I'll definitely check those you recommended to me
The word slam comes from slam dancing. A slam is a riff that gets people to slam dance. In the early/mid 1980s they were called mosh parts. In the late 1980s/early 90s they were called slam parts/slams. Bands like Devastation, Death, Primus, Carcass, Anthrax,, Obituary, Biohazard and Life Of Agony to name a few were doing it before 1991 and Suffocation. Bottom line is Suffocation and Internal Bleeding didn’t invent dance music.
This band is the reason why I love death metal so much, these guys are amazing live, no one can put a show like these guys do. Frank Mullen taught me how to do that thing with my hand and whenever I hear a blast beat I do that.
@@lenol0315 it is a breakdown though lol it's just a slightly slower, more chugging, and heavy breakdown same with beatdowns in beatdown hardcore they're just breakdowns with different names like I get calling it "a slam" or a "beatdown" in the case of beatdown hardcore but like it should also be equally correct to call it a breakdown
My favorite DM song ever. Lost my mind when I first heard it. Ace’s records @ Oldsmar Flea Market 1991. James Murphy worked there and told me it would be the most brutal thing I had ever heard when handing it to me. You were correct Sir James & still is to this day. 😎🤘
...classic...classic...classic suffocation! rootin' for the underdog that one day they will get the credit they so well deserve. Long live Hobbs, Smith, Mullen and Marchais...no matter where they are or what band they may be in.
I’ve been to many death metal shows and seen the biggest name acts out there and Suffocation is the one band that made me go “holy fuckin shit…” because it was so mind numbingly great. It’s an indescribable feeling when being pummeled with this kind of power live. The “slam” riff on this song made every atom in the venue jump. I will never forget Terrence busting out a solo and you could hear the collective awe in the crowd in front of him when he finished. Truly magical…
All my freinds sit there and talk abt how brutal their death core bands are and then I play this band for them..... They usually just go silent and give up
I saw them last week on the Death Feast festival in Germany. It was like 12 years ago that i saw them live. Words can't descrive the sheer brutality of the gig. Frank Mullen is the king!
I think that was when the singer from Pyrexia filled in. I miss that place. I saw Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Angel Corpse, Kataklysm, At The Gates, and a whole bunch of other shows there.
can it get any better then this? is it safe to say these guys are the most underated metal bands of all time? i think they would crush any1 live. fucking unreal!
At 3:06 is the single most deadly riff in the history of death metal. Simple, yes. But it is the blueprint for all breakdown riffs to follow IMO. The first time I heard this song, it absolutely blew my fucking mind.
This song always makes me feel like one of those viking berserkers who just took a bunch of psychedelics then proceeded to mercilessly slaughter the enemy
Although their recent albums don't do much to me compared to the old stuff, it's performances like this that still get me following this band. Breathtaking. And cool dudes, when they get off the stage they really almost seem like your average neighbour :)
Damn, that slow piece at 3:06 is so fucking amazing, Frank's voice sounds so extremly rotten. I saw them a couple time's life in the early 90's and every time i was totaly blown away by their sheer brutality, especialy the vocals. To bad that the vocals on the albums never match how the sound live on stage.
I HAVE CONNECTIONS WITH THIS BAND!! ( and the band TENPOINT) Frank is one of my friends Father =) (not going to give her name out for private reasons) And I consider Derek like my uncle.. He isn't actaully my uncle but I known him since i was born & hes best friends with my mom =)

The birth of SLAM!
Frank has the looks of a hardcore vocalist, until that monstrous vocals come.
