Definitely put the washer on first and then the the gear and nut when re-installing.

i had the same problem on a john deere lawn tractor a few years ago. sector gear and pinion gear were moderately worn but the real culprit was the bushing which was completely worn out. I liked this video.

Tip: I run a length of string trimmer line up that hole till it clears the engine bay and thread the flanged hex bushing on the line and let it slide down. A bit of pinky finagling gets it properly seated.

Great job your washer goes on first then gear then nut

You start the steering shaft through the bushing hold the washer in place then push the steering shaft all the way down, then the gear and the nut.

The washer goes on before the nut then the gear. You start the steering shaft through the bushing hold the washer in place then push the steering shaft all the way down, then the gear and the nut. that be why the other gear broke prematurely. there it a thicker bushing on amazon as well that is about $10.00 that is more like the OEM part and lasts 3 times longer.

I've got an ltx1040 I'm gonna have to do this and replace the plastic upper bushing on the column shaft as well.mine has the little single cylinder Kohler courage, but other than that I've got good service from it. I think it's got 260 hours or so on it. It's no Cadillac, but it gets the job done. Thanks for sharing.

You seem to have forgotten the flat washer between the steering pinion gear that goes above that pinion gear on the steering shaft. Everything else looked good

Cub cadet is about to be bought by stanley black and decker. So I would think cub cadet is going to be the best mower to buy in the next few years.

Right now, it is Cub Cadet, MTD and Toro, i don't think Stanley, Black and Decker will raise the quality, I think Toro and MTD are better quality, but time will tell.

Washer goes on before the gear. Probably why your gears broke so quick. Maybe you should learn before you teach.
