I doubt they will ruin the happy end for them, but they will probably make more tension and drama though. The brilliance (and i'm gonna assume some things) it's that they started writing the situations and events from Hughie's perspective and then switched by asking "how this would look like if Annie was the protagonist?", even though we might never see an "Annie POV" chapter, this technique makes her interactions in the scenes where she is the costar have MUCH MORE realism and impact. I never deeply thought about this like right now and blew my mind, going beyond fiction and being really illuminating in real life. I also think this is the basis of George Martin's writing (Fukumoto is also another person who does this in his own way).
This story was the backbone of both the comic & series... I cannot help but feel that both of them were kind of sidelined in S2, but here is to hoping for more improvements in the later seasons
Honestly, I wish they gave us episodes showing flashbacks of robin after season 1. Because while Annie is definitely a great girlfriend for Hughie, showing more moments of him with Robin is a great homage to their relationship prior to the series.
The reason why starlight loves hughie is because for the first time she doesnt have to be another character, she is herself and loves how Hughie doesnt weak or doesnt act tough to impress her he is just himself
