- An intimate, revealing musical odyssey on the life and career of guitar virtuoso Eric Clapton, told by those who have known him best, including BB King, Jimi Hendrix, and George Harrison.
The press conference for this film takes place on Monday, September 11 at 10:30am.
For Eric Clapton, blues music made a strong impression at a young age: "It was always one man with his guitar versus the world. He was completely alone and had no options other than to just sing and play to ease his pain."
Over a five-decade career, Clapton has proven himself to be a guitar virtuoso, creating rock music deeply influenced by the blues. In this documentary, he reflects candidly on how his life experiences were channelled into music. The film traces his career through The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, and his solo years, telling the stories behind hits like "For Your Love," "Layla," and "Tears in Heaven."
Filmmaker Lili Fini Zanuck draws from an extensive archive of performances and home movies to construct the film. Accompanying the footage are audio interviews with Clapton and people who played central roles in his life, including his grandmother Rose Clapp, George Harrison, Ahmet Ertegun, Steve Winwood, and his former wife, Pattie Boyd.
Clapton grew up with an inferiority complex. He struggled with the demands of the music business, tumultuous love affairs, drug addiction, and the tragic loss of his young son. The film traces how he coped with these challenges, for better and for worse, before establishing a family with his second wife, Melia McEnery. We come away with a deeper sense of what has inspired so much memorable music.

He is one of the very few whom probably 95 percent of his songs are hits. He's a genius song writer.
I agree.... thank you....
Yes Eric, it does matter if you continue playing. We will miss you terribly if you stop.
It's good to see Eric for who he is. Legacy matters and I am happy he has survived to see it documented in a way that he wanted.
Eric, you have become such a gracious, good guy since getting the booze and drugs out of your system. So many of your friends and colleagues didn't make it. "I'm so Glad" you did.
but he always have this "same old blues" till he die lol
I've been following Eric's career for 50 years. It's so good to see Eric at 72 years old in such a good state of mind. I hope & I think he will carry on.Can't wait to see the doc. Long live Eric Clapton !

Nice to see Eric bouncing back!
Cool😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great idea for a movie from the director.
I think that Eric and producer Lili's friendship began when she directed the film _Rush_ (1991) (with Jason Patric & Jennifer Jason Leigh). Eric's song _Tears in Heaven_ was first introduced on this soundtrack
Guitars are dying? I’m 17 and if it weren’t for this man I’d probably be one of those EDM idiots. But I went picked up a guitar and just learned from watching his fingers and listening on any concert video I could find. I so hope he has a few more shows I can make it to.
Caleb Lucero 16 here and I feel the same. I have every reason to just sit on my ass and watch netflix the whole day but he actually inspired me to do something other than that : to pick up the guitar. But your point does kinda proved what they said. Everyone's listening to EDM these days, we are a scarce portion of the population who actually listen to guitar music anymore.
Nash Burges, Exactly dude! I hope that one day people realize that people who actually have some skills and talent are worth listening to and not these people who only know how to press a space bar. Heck it probably won’t be me up on a stage but I’d give it my best if I had a chance. More power to you dude.
Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars will air on Showtime on Feb. 10, 2018. A theatrical release is also expected.
Be really cool to see EC do a pure blues tour, dusting off his 335 and GLP , leaving his Strat and pop stuff at home and dragging out a Marshall stack, killin' some Chicago '3 Kings', Otis Rush and the like, as a last hurrah.... er and do a DVD o' course .
let's hope GOD gonna play forever, such a legend.
I am going to echo that, "guitars are not over". I play guitar, and so do almost all of my family members-who are in their 20's all the way up to 97! So the guitar is very much alive. However, I do see things changing a bit with the introduction of modeling amps, the internet, and the economy. The major manufacturers are trying to keep up with lower cost woods and woods that aren't "endangered." Corporations focus on profit. Many "mom and pop" stand alone guitar shops have closed because they just couldn't keep up with the larger corporation stores. That is one of the impacts. I also see two characteristics coming from the now "younger" generation...those who are into music via electronics because it is easier with "instant gratification"; and those who are genuinely seeking out the tone...the sound where hard work and practice of playing an instrument is involved. Just look at John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, and the many others whose guitar playing is bringing in the young people. I look forward to seeing Eric in this documentary. I have seen him in person and he is an amazing and accomplished artist.
Guitar Sales are down at Guitar Center et al cuz people are buying their guitars and accessories ONLINE!
good point
Antarblue - The flood of used equipment available each year makes buying a new guitar an unnecessary and expensive proposition.
(At least in my humble opinion, I own 20 plus different used guitars and it unlikely I will stop buying used)
I have to humbly agree. I invested some of my retirement fund in acquiring a similar sized collection of instruments (both synths and guitars) via evilbay and the like.
Sales of new guitars may be down, but remember that there are a vast number of used guitars out there. I think Allampedupscxd makes this point too.
Antarblue maybe its because every guitarist already has 5 of the things.
Excellent questions from the audience. Interesting about the state of the guitar.
Wayne Bennet guitar on Booby Bland Stormy Monday, Further on up the Road ...
Eric the control freak 5:04 - that's new
Clapton is God!!
Guitars are NOT over... It's just that Fender & Gibson are not progressing
Its kind of strange how his voice was quivering and shaking the whole time, hope his health is good
Martin Baldock But....but...I don't want them too.....they're good just as they are.....
It has been said that guitarists are, in the main, quite conservative in their tastes when it comes to choosing a guitar, so I can understand why you like them. I'm a Telecaster fan myself but the best one of the several I own was made in the Far East and cost a lot less than a Fender made Tele. I also have for example, a couple of Godins, Danelectros, Switch Vibracell, all of which have their own distinctive looks and sound. Plus, there are many guitar builders throughout the world making great instruments for people with bigger budgets.
The reason guitars ARE over is that they are : A - Too expensive ! I'm 17 and been playing for years due to Eric, but I cannot afford anything more than a Squire. And, B - There aren't enough modern mainstream guitar heroes.
Guitar music is not only the Blues. It will always be my favourite music but people are using guitars in different ways, and very effectively, often alongside the use of electronic instruments.
Who is the beautiful creature at the 00:54 mk ?
Whats that on Lily's arm?
maybe guitar sales and funding for music in schools would go up if they changed the curriculum and what they're taught.. imagine how much more popular music/band classes would be if they learned how to play classics like eric clapton or any of those guys, rather than the super old classical type music. Might inspire kids to wanna pick up the guitar again
guitar music and sales are down cause there aint no inspirational guitarists writing guitar music.
Gary Clark Jr!
golfito for you, maybe...
golfito I don't care...
Great interview. Only I didn't like the dumb question, "The Guitar is Dying". That's is Not true !! We could talk about this all day, Lili answered it well !
I think guitar playing is actually exploding all over the world. The music business is certainly different, with all the electronic music and whatnot. But there are countless boutique companies making amps, pedals, pickups, guitars, etc... all of that is exploding like crazy. If you go to Sears or Target you see Floyd, Stones, AC/DC shirts for sale because kids are buying them and wearing them to their School Of Rock lessons. Rock is alive and well, but the music business is very different these days. Guitar Center and Gibson financial problems aren’t connected to lack of guitar sales. My two cents...
So he grabs his hand bag and off he goes.
Great slip up by the interviewer - 'Life in bars'..
28.00 the jounalist "eric clapton .. life in bars " lolllllllllllllllllll u could have added "stages and women
There are loads of young guys and gals buying guitars and playing music. You could throw a stick down Denmark street and hit someone who regularly plays and even tours. These days, every other kid is a prodigy. You just gotta look for it. Nothing's changed in that respect. Most of them are pretty boring though.

dieser Film ist nichtssagen. Ich weiß nicht wer ihn zu so einem 0/815 Film beraten hat. Schade.
"young people dont have any guitar heroes" what a laughable statement from a reporter
Evan Higgs It's hard to accept but sadly that's true. Im 16 and my guitar hero is Clapton. And in my experience, I honestly do not see John Mayer or Gary Clark Jr influencing any of my friends or a very many other people either.
Nash Burges same
Guys.... you literally just proved my point. "my guitar hero is clapton" means that young people have guitar heroes haha. Even when clapton is gone he will still be your hero. You will be influenced by him just like gary clark has been influenced by him and john mayer. Though you dont see it now those young guns will have their time where 16 year olds will go... that is my guitar hero. Sure music has changed drastically but if those guys along with countless others can get kids to pick up an axe and try it themselves there will always be guitar heroes.
Evan Higgs I think what she meant in the interview was that we don't have any guitar heroes of this generation. As in, there's no one who's currently popular who plays the guitar well enough to influence people these days. I found Clapton by chance and trust me, he wasn't easy to find. Had I found John Mayer instead of Clapton, while Mayers a great guitarist, I'm sure that I would not have been in the least bit interested or motivated to pick up the guitar because of him.
Nash Burges - Shawn Mendes has been influenced by John Mayer and Ed Sheeran
viejo yeta deja de hablar de vos, y toca.
