I think people forget the context behind Whitney and Mariah’s moment back then. In the 90s, they were constantly compared and pitted against each other. But they came out with a song, interviews, and that moment and showed that they were friends and loved each other, that there wasn’t any animosity between them. That’s what made that moment so special. Two of the biggest female stars of our time coming together!
Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion are also reputed to be feuding. That may be one of the reasons they decided to recreate the moment.

They aren’t claiming to be the modern Whitney and Mariah. They were just paying homage to that moment. It was just a little cute gag. That’s all.

Dua and Megan are gorgeous young women living their dreams. No need to speak badly of them; show some love. Mariah and Whitney are legends, gorgeous and two of the greatest voices in music history. There's no one like either of them. I lovingly remember the original, but appreciate the young people today doing their thing. I miss Whitney so much. Rest well songbird.

But, no, I don’t think they’ve had the impact or paid the dues W & M have. Which is not to say they won't get there. It takes a body of work and a long career to reach icon status. And to be honest, the homage wasn’t well-written or well presented. Still a fan of D & M regardless.
I think the whole point of them doing it was to break the barrier people set between them and saying something like this actually just insults what’s Mariah and Whitney’s whole point was.
