Neil is great. But to believe in the evolution of man from ape , Cannot be proved by any kind of real evidence the bones don't exist. Neanderthal man has been proved to be just another homo sapian. Who were wiped out....evolution Is a theory that's been taught as a fact. Despite no physical evidence. Pseudo- science ?
You are an amazing teacher ... bringing history into our present world and making all of us who are lucky enough to see and hear your podcasts, History enthusiats. Thank you ❤
Geology is minority in estimation but geology has taken us into our current understanding of our world the past and our own place in the world. I love it.
Neil thank you so much for these. As someone interested in politics and history with a love of the British Isles this is a welcome escape from the madness of the dystopian world we live in. Thank you so much for all you do mate. 🇬🇧
I really enjoyed that Neil, and I'm so pleased that you think so much about the circumstances around a place and events in the way you do, as I do too. Thank you very much for posting.
Thank you Neil Oliver, for these beautiful programa of history. I love the way that you correctly humanise the people of the past and in that way, humanise us.
This is the crux. Picturing a moment frozen in time in an age so remote we can never see the world as they did. There's eternal mystery and wonder in such thoughts. This was why I planned on signing up for a history access course to university when I was unemployed over a decade ago. At the last minute though I changed my mind and signed up for the art course and ended up with a fine art degree! It's the same process for me though. When I'm making art or imagining it I'm actually back-engineering my postmodern mind in an attempt to access the primal source of what I am. Keep up the good work! I was a big fan of your Two Men in a Trench series and the way you experienced the landscape and tried to bring the battlefield to life.
Beautifully done Neil, the connection to our brother laid to rest 33000 years ago was palpable and emotional. You and Bruce Fummey are my 2 favourite Scotsmen.
You are truly a poet Neil and your emotion resonates on a very deep level. I have read the series of books by Jean Auel, the Clan of the Cave Bear, and this reminded me of those. Although there was a great deal of speculation, I understand the desire, maybe need, to connect to people from the distant past, as I believe they have important things to remind us about our selves today.
Wonderful and fascinating. Thank you so much for both episodes Neil. And thank you also for your incredible Saturday reflections on GBNews! Jana from Slovakia.
The reverend found a great treasure. His need to prove his beliefs may have wrongly influenced his interpretations but he never would have been there to find it if not for those beliefs. Poetry
Wow, only a week or is it two weeks since I saw your 1st episode? It powerfully touched me, and I was looking forward to this….. including telling people to look out for your ‘love letter’………but so much has happened in my world, and the bigger world since! so sorry I forgot. But looking forward to this….. thank you Neil.
Now, if my history teacher had talked to us like this… history would have been so much better remembered and I would have got an A instead of an E ( which I told my mother was for EXCELLENT - and then she told all her friends 😂).

Love you Neil. You are an inspiration to so many, thank you so much. But just dropped by to quickly say the thumbnail for this video had my heart skip a beat. You are a seriously handsome man 💕💕

Excellent video, Neil, thank you. It is a shame that post-apocalypse scientists, when they visit this cave, will gain no knowledge of the ancient contents which have been plundered from it. Maybe today, some British trophy cabinet contains the skull of The Red Laddie which they found during their Victorian cave search in their 20's and thought that it was interesting enough to keep.
Lovely story again by Mr Oliver. God is still our creator and giver of life. Proof of God is everywhere today and scientists even agree to it. Thanks Neil I look forward to all you do especially on the news a true voice of wisdom
Excellent episode - I'm gradually making my way through this series from the start. Just wondering though, who is the other voice in the podcast? It sounds a lot like Alice Roberts!
Will have to read more but would be interested as to whether the mammoth skull was the only skull present and its position in relation to the body. Animal human hybrids appear regularly in cave paintings so its position could be significant.
The word day in the bible means a period of time. it says a few times in the bible that to God a day can be like a thousand years and a thousand years can be as a day. for example. when God separated the lands from the seas , that day could have been the years of volcanos.. i think that if we look at the bible in literal terms with todays thinking then it will never make sense.. And what if the great flood was the land as far as they could see. there was so much of the world that they did not know of so to them all they could see may have been the whole world. remembering that it was centuries after that before people realised the world was not flat. just some of my thoughts
Reverend Buckland must be looked at the same way we look at the man buried in the cave , both men of their time , each with his beliefs and vision of the world of his time . We are each one of those , in 1000 years some one may find a grave yard with our bones under it and draw conclusions about us in his time , perhaps his own version of our religion in great part from his own version of religion in his time
Great podcast. Very interesting history lesson. One thing I am wondering... how could this mans bones have been reddened for burial unless the flesh had been removed first??
It's hard to imagine the senses of vulnerability and danger they had from the presence of wooly rhino's and sabre tooth cats. They on the other hand wouldn't have had to put up with Drakeford.
The Biblical creation marks the beginning of history, dating to the time writing (cuneiform) was invented. The set of 32 symbols identified by Genevieve Von Petzinger were reproduced over a vast period (40,000 to 10,000 BP), showing there must have been an oral culture at the time of the Paviland burial, but the tales associated with the signs are lost.
I have just caught up with these videos, and find them more enjoyable than Mr. Oliver's political contributions (not that I necessarily disagree with him). That said, I think his comment at 29:30 is a good rule of thumb for everyone, regardless of their tribal affiliations.
While I love this series and the general direction of change and history Neil takes us through, I disagree with the deep-time evolution dates. Here are a few creationist science views as a counterpoint: ruclips.net/video/hB5zHCkKnEQ/видео.html Neil is very generous about different points of view and just adopts the orthodox view, which should be examined too.
If you lay out the lives of Adam and his descendants (and I have) as listed in the Bible, you will get a rough estimate of about 1600 years (give or take a few hundred years) between the creation of Adam and the flood story. The problem is, even by the best estimate, you are counting from the creation of Adam. The Bible does not specify exactly how long it was between the creation of the universe/world/humans, and the creation of Adam. A lot of the Hebrew and Greek that was originally use was inaccurately translated into English in the KJV. In Hebrew, there are some words that don't translate well into English.
The new thinking about Genesis starts , and the Earth was without form , and void, and darkness was upon the face of the earth. The words form, and void ,in Hebrew are tohu and bohu meaning chaos and confusion .and the spirit of GOD moved apon the face of the water ? So the earth was already there. It had been destroyed at an earlier part of earths history. So Genesis begins here. So it could be created at that point in literary six days. The one day for a thousand years I don't think is the answer. Everything thing today in nature is is in symbiosis. You can't have one thing without the other. Plants need water soil sun co2. take away one the plants die. so creation has to happen quickly.

Neil I'd like to chat with you about ice ages. This idea about the ice giants and everything was a concept I came up with in 2008.
