This is supposed to be an alternate universe where everything is the opposite from the show's regular universe. Ares is normally the god of war, but here he's the god of love, and Cupid is the god of war, instead of the god of love. Hercules is the hero in the regular universe, but here he's evil and the king of the gods and married to Aphrodite, etc.
I remembering watching this when I was kid, I was just as confused as Iolus. The funniest part was when he met his counterpart in the 'other' world which was even funnier
Actually it makes sense. In ancient literature, a hero “needs not Ares to inspire him when he goes into battle, for at the bidding of his own god (i.e. lover) he is ready” 😉

Actually both Cupid (Desire) and Amor (Love) are used for the Roman version of Eros. The show went with Cupid.
