Good review Mark! I think I may need to trade in the previous generation and upgrade! Best hot hatch cars imo I’ve my megane rs 7 years loved every minute of it
Nice review, best reviewer of these kind of cars in Ireland in my opinion. One point, It doesn't have adjustable suspension. Moving to race mode doesn't stiffen it up. It's the biggest difference between it and the Type R which has a ride you could live with day to day in comfort mode, and in my opinion (having driven a manual Trophy) is the biggest weakness of the car. A €50k+ car with a permanently rock solid ride doesn't cut it in 2019, even for a hot hatch lover like me. Cupra, new Focus ST, Golf R, Civic Type R, i30N... all have adjustable dampers to allow you soften/stiffen to suit your location/mood etc. It's abit stuck in the noughties from Renault to miss out on adjustable damping. Some will say you can buy the Sport chassis car for a softer ride, in which case Renault don't allow a limited slip differential in the Sport chassis car, and 280hp spinning through one wheel is no fun. Pity because it's the best looking hot hatch to my eye
mad4tar77 thanks for your kind words. Could’ve sworn the suspension got even stiffer, it certainly felt like the ride got more bouncy over unstable surfaces but maybe that was due to my right foot. The Civic Type R is the one all day long over any of them but it just looks a bit too mad. The Renault looks bloody amazing in that colour.
That is actually a very good point. One of the best advancements in hot hatches these days is that you can adjust suspension. It makes living with them so much easier. Usually all sporty cars like this have way to aggressive stiffness and makes them unbearable.
You are absolutely right. I have mine now for 3 weeks and i already feel my back is hurting a little bit. But luckily i have another car i can use as a daily otherwise i´ll be sitting in a wheelchair after a year. Other than that i am very happy with the car it drives, sounds and looks fantastic in my opinion.
It is a fair point. Renault could have made it an option. On the other side not many Trophy or Trophy R will be sold. I think those that buy them want it for what it is. It is kinda more aimed for having fun at a track but usable aswell. The regular R.S. is a bit softer and I guess that option is good enough for most people and they won't need or even think about what they could get with a Trophy.
hey Nobby, great review man! I'm currently deciding between a Megane RS 280 (Sport) and a Golf R and this is the second video of yours I've come across now, and I'm enjoying them. I really like your presentation style...keep it up mate. subbed.
@@NobbyOnCars yeah, but it's actually for my wife haha. she currently drives an M135i, but it's getting a little long in the tooth. she actually prefers the Golf, and I think they're fine, but they're EVERYWHERE in Australia! I've only recently discovered the RS world, and I'm very intrigued...they are well appointed, quick enough, and sexy af! we're heading out to test both this weekend, so it will be interesting to see which one wins us over. :)
Yes great review. I too, am looking to upgrade my much loved M135i and have been considering the Megane RS Sport or Golf R/AudiS3/RS3 here in Australia. Civic Type is just too OTT on the aesthetics. (Plus I want auto) As an older driver I am thinking the M2 would be great on track (1% of my driving) but a little hard to live with the other 99% of the time. Would love to know what you ended up with?
Superflea and Geoff; so did you guys ended up getting GolfR or Megane? I’m also in the same situation with my wife coming from an MX5 instead of a 135 however though, here in Australia too.
it is a great looking car, I have a Hyundai i30N which is really fantastic, and although I haven't driven the Type R or Megane, I would say you're right, 1st place=Type R, 2nd =Megane and 3rd to i30N. But, crucially the i30N is a good bit cheaper than those 2.
Thanks! Yeah I think evolution means the raw factor is rare enough to find in cars these days especially hot hatches compared to what they used to be like. Same can be said for an E30 BMW and a present day 3 series though.
Hi Nobby, great review, such good work mate, have a 508 pse, changed from a 308 gti, big mistake!!!!! Should have kept hold of that car, such an underrated hit hatch. Want to get back to a hot hatch… looking at a trophy but have read about so many issues with the battery specific to the trophy. Did you have any issues or is a minority that are having with these batteries?? Thanks again. Keep up the good work!!!!!!
Really good video. You really putting a lot of effort in to shots. Fair play to you. Thank you for leaving as much real raw in cabin view and noise of car itself. Is it fake sound or the actual exhaust sound?
just to note.. the manual gearbox comes with manual handbrake. I drove one.. great car to drive.. definitely grips the corners when pushed hard. the only niggle with the paddles on the auto box is that they're fixed to the column so if your turning the wheel halfway and need to change it can be troublesome as you have to move a hand off the wheel.
Mike P generally cars that have dynamic suspension will calm things down with a comfort button and those with a sport mode (without dynamic) just meant a calmer drive mode. All I know is this car had race mode and everything got tighter.
@@NobbyOnCars it's not bad but prefer the standard RS u get bit better ride and seats are better interior really let's it down if u took the RS badge off you'd think it was just a normal Megane till you put the foot down of course 😂
i could get one on Monday in mint condition, 4 services already, 1 owner and 20.000 km on it for 27.800 euros. i am thinking about selling my amazing and mint 350z and other daily just to have the 1 car for everything. i want something that is family friendly, yet i can take out and rip it on narrow roads when i feel like it, yet not ruin my wallet when driving calm to work. it says on paper that it does drink 8l/100km mixed driving. that's not too bad. 6.5/100km on highway. i could live with that for sure if those numbers are accurate
@@NobbyOnCars i dont like the look of the type r. but i cant really find anywhere if the megane uses 95 or 98 quality gas. i would assume 98 since it is a performance car, but it could as well be 95 since it is a 1.8l engine. maybne it works with both?
Civic better to drive in places, Renault doesn't stand out as much (especially if you avoid yellow), reliability wise, you'd have to give it to the Honda on history alone but I think Renault have become a lot more reliable these days.
In grey or blue it does appeal to me but typeR is bit loud especially rear. It shouts get me if you can. If I was buying, I would test drive both and likely choose typeR
Why would you have heated seats in whats basiclly a track car for the road. That would add loads of extra weight if thats what u want buy a bmw or something lol. Renaultsports are about the driving experiance not creature comforts.
@@NobbyOnCars well they tend to be the bare minimum these days, no one would buy them i guess without. But all the safety equipment and toys like satnavs just spoil a cars handling. Heated seats in a motorway cruiser yes, but not in a sports car.
well, I have ordered mine trophy edc in yellow and with recaros, parking sensors and 8,7" bose multimedia for 26k eur excl. VAT. Had super big discount on it. First I was thinking about i30 fastback N also, but the price difference was around 1500 eur, and I get dualclutch, which I wanted, better looking car and 300 bhp :-)
Rs trophy fwd, golf r 4motion, choice is easely made for me. Add the better quality of the interior and it's just a no brainer. Also, the price is retarded, for a megane, 50g seriously.

There is deffo some real exhaust action going on. Very similar to the i30N in the pops and bangs from it.

Without dynamic suspension, how can you have comfort mode?
Engine, transmission etc
