  • *Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the following program contains images and voices of people who have died.*
Tourists from all over the world visit Uluru every year, but for decades there has been a dispute over the controversial practice of climbing the rock - which is a sacred place for Australia's indigenous Anangu people. From the end of 2019 the chain that makes the climb possible will finally be removed. As the BBC's Rebecca Henschke reports, it is a vital step for the Anangu people in reclaiming the rock

You don't have to get the whole experience by just climbing Uluru... You can get by spending time with anangu. Anangu can help you by understanding and connecting with the spirit of the country... I think this is far better than climbing but with understanding you wouldn't want to be climb the rock anyway from my point of view.

Obviously you don't know that most aboriginal communities are off limits to white people . The white Aborigines in Canberra don't want people seeing the conditions of the full blood have to live in or acknowledge their existence so they don't have to share the money

I climbed it in 1994 I think. If only I knew then what I know now I would not have done so. There's so much more richness in engaging with the Elders and learning about their country from them. I'm sorry for my lack of respect and ignorance....maybe one day I'll return and enjoy it more....because I don't remember much other than rude tourists, me among them. Wow these ppl have patience......when the Elders say enough, you better listen. Well put together btw....very informative and timely story with an important message. Australian ABC could do well to produce stories with this depth again.

You have to pay an entrance fee to get in the area of the rock. Now this is a tourist attraction. Off course lots of people wanna climb it, cause it's a part of the experience being there!
Not to far away from Ayers Rock... uhm sry, I mean Uluru, is another rock. That one is ok to climb and visit, and also FREE to access... and this I got told by a Aboriginal guide, when I was at the rock in 2011! I asked him why is that one ok to climb but not this one! He replied that he couldn't answer! I replied back and said that people coming here pay a lot, and the Aborginals running the place make a lot of money, and forbidding tourist to climb is hypocrisy and double moral! So you can take our money but not give us something back!? He just walked away!
But you know what... go ahead forbid climbing! Heck, forbid entering the area, and lose all that tourist money, and after that we'll have this conversation again!
