- In May 2017, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, coming from all points of the southern sky, made the Uluru Statement From The Heart. Building on decades of activism in pursuit of constitutional reform and self-determination, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples reached out to the nation in a heartful effort to create a movement for a better future. An experienced independent management consultant, Dean has worked across the public, corporate, not-for-profit and political sectors. He has advised a range of clients on strategy, engagement and co-design, including the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Palladium, Coles, the Referendum Council and Jawun. In addition to extensive experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs, he has commercial experience both in Australia and the UK. Dean is from the Quandamooka peoples from Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in Queensland. He was involved in the negotiations leading to a Native Title determination in 2011 and continues to work with his community on this journey. Dean has a Bachelor of Arts (Politics and Journalism) from the University of Queensland. I was privileged enough to be on the TEDx team for this presentation. The first time I saw this amazing document was backstage, trying to find something to display it on. We were all so excited to actually have Dean be able to present this to the people of Canberra, and the world. Now looking back at the now major historical significance of the document, I wish I had of found something better to display it on. Then I thought that this came from the people, so many hands of all peoples had touched it, all far more important than I ever will be. Then I realised that this IS a DOCUMENT for for All Australians. We should all be able to touch what should be historical document that unites all Australians.
This is a great talk as I an Australian white man can ultimately admit I am at my best when I have a vision of tomorrow being as productive as today. It is when I am unable to Invision tomorrow I am all but weakened and my prospects claimed by what I call imposter syndrome when inclusion becomes delusional. Support one remedy that fuels the progress of success.

Dean, as a migrant to Australia , I am outraged that this has taken so long, I’m outraged that this is even a question, I’m outraged that First Nation peoples need to ask for a voice. I am forever grateful to Aboriginal and Torres Islander peoples past and present for allowing me and my family to reside here and call this great land my home too. And I stand with tears in my eyes with the Uluṟu Statement from the Heart.

Many non Indigenous Australians want these reforms and proper recognition with equal sovereignty for our First Nations people. How beautifully quoted - they are all of our ancestors... when will we realise this uluru statement is a document of sharing instead of taking like the current constitution... This is the way forward and we must care about and push for this.

4 years later and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are still patiently waiting to complete the job of weaving the ancient traditional past with the future of this country. Again they extend an invitation to the Australian people to remake ourselves as a united nation. I say YES!
Attempting to grant political privilege to only one group of Australians based on their ancestry is anything but a way to unify the people of a democratic country.

Tomorrow Thomas Mayor is coming to Mullumbimby and I shall hear him speak. We all deserve to have our First Nations Voice enshrined in the constitution and have a Makarrata Commission. The only reason we acknowledge Torres strait islanders is not for the people there but for governmental strategic control of those islands and the waterway they lie within.

I did not understand the importance of the Voice when I first heard about it. I thought a treaty would perhaps be more important.Then gradually understanding dawned.
At the time I was living in Timor Leste, a country whose people had been dispossessed of their sovereignty and nationhood in 1975. In 2002 they finally gained independence so longed denied them
I often looked at my fellow Timorese travellers on public transport, and saw something that hard to describe- a quiet pride in themselves as their own people, a people who had sovereignty over themselves. Then it dawned the Voice is to Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islanders what independence from Indonesia is to the Timorese. That is why it is so important.
The fight is not over. Aboriginal people have lost the battle but will win the war in the end because sovereignty will never be ceded nor extinguished forever and ever!!!
When you claim welfare or use the public health or take advantage of public education it clearly states that these things are only available to Australian citizens.
If you have claimed any of these benefits you have acknowledged that you are a citizen of Australia.

In a society where legally you can't discriminate by race, how are indigenous-only apprenticeships tolerated?

''Voice from the heart'' is a euphemism, what it actually is, is a direct path for unelected people to govern society, based on their race. It's undemocratic, except for the one-time democratic process of installing it by vote.
It's similar to electing a royal family, where members don't earn the right to govern us through their merit, they are just born to have authority over us. 😒
Furthermore, what is an indigenous person? Why should someone with 10% indigenous heritage be granted social superiority over the rest?
If you want a voice to parliament go and get elected through the democratic system like everyone else (including many ''people of colour'').
Finally, someone who understands the real repercussions of this asinine idea.
And on the welcome to country, yes it is just so pretentious and even the most ardent virtue signallers just blaze through it like they are reading terms and conditions at the end of an advertisement.

I’m an American sitting in my kitchen 2 days ago from this post, I was drinking cup of coffee watching a video on RUclips when all of sudden an image appeared 8’ away from me. I thought my eyes was seeing light spots but it was still dark outside, still looking at the image it was a rectangular picture and inside the picture was Uluru mountain with a crescent moon to the right of it. Does anyone know why an American had a vision of Uluru, and what it means?

Exactly. They are a troubled people. Not all obviously, many live integrated to Australia living productive meaningful lives.
We need more indigenous Australians doing this. But sadly the left doesn’t see it this way, they have a romantic view of indigenous communities, seeing only the cultural practices and ignoring the deep issues of violence, power and dominance of elders, substance abuse, lack of direction due to living in remote areas and subsisting on government handouts, lack of employment due to isolation.
If they really cared they would wish them to more fully integrate with society, but truth is those wishing the indigenous regress to their former culture are also haters of this society and it’s goals and what it requires of its adults. To take responsibility for your own survival and providence.
The left pushing this movement is a young movement, driven by idealistic youth brainwashed from higher education and universities, who haven’t lived in the real world, who don’t understand the importance of true equality and the need to share the load. They wish the state would support them and anyone else lazy or too incapable to do so.

It sounds like you just want more of the same structure we always had, which is what has been keeping aboriginals back. More government programs, more funding, more welfare. That's not aboriginals controling their own affairs, that's the Australian government controling them, except with aboriginal politicians and bureaucrats doing it instead of white ones. We already had ATSIC, made up of aboriginals, and it failed so badly everybody agreed for it to be abolished.

When Australia becomes a Republic, the President should be a First Australian Elder, nominated by the authentic original Sovereign peoples, with a role similar to current Governor General, but representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait original Sovereignty, not the British Crown.
