- The top 10 goals in Team Canada's hockey history.
10. Mike Bossy tips in Paul Coffey's point shot in overtime vs. the USSR in the 1984 Canada Cup semi-final after a 2 on 1 defensive play by Coffey. Canada goes on to beat Sweden in the final to win the Canada Cup.
9. Rick Nash dominantly fights and beats his man 1 on 1 in the 2007 World Hockey Championship final to put Canada up 4-2 with just over a minute left in the 3rd period, ensuring Canada the Gold over Finland.
8. Jonathan Toews scores three times on three attempts in the semi-final shootout vs. USA in the 2007 World Junior Hockey Championship. His first two keep the shootout going, allowing him to get the winner on the third followed by Carey Price's game clinching stop on Peter Mueller. Canada goes on to beat Russia in the final to win its third straight WJC Gold.
7. Darryl Sittler scores in overtime of game 2 of the 1976 Canada Cup final against Czechoslovakia, clinching the first ever Canada Cup by two games to none.
6. Vincent Lecavalier scores from a ridiculously wide angle on a second chance rebound in overtime of the 2004 World Cup semi-final vs. the Czech Republic. Canada beats Finland in the final to win its first World Cup.
5. After a 50 year drought for Canada in Men's Ice Hockey at the Winter Olympics, Joe Sakic scores on a breakaway with just over a minute to go in the Gold Medal game at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, putting Canada up 5-2 and eliminating any chance of an American comeback.
4. Trailing 5-4 vs. Russia, Jordan Eberle ties the game with 5.4 seconds left in the 3rd period, after John Tavares throws the puck to the net, in the semi-final at the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championship. Eberle scores the winner in the shootout and Canada goes on to win its 5th straight WJC Gold against Sweden in the final.
3. On a 3 on 1 odd man rush, Wayne Gretzky passes to Mario Lemieux who scores to split a 5-5 tie with the USSR in game 3 of 3 in the 1987 Canada Cup final with 1:26 remaining. Canada holds on and wins the Canada Cup by two games to one.
2. Sidney Crosby calls for a pass from Jarome Iginla and beats Ryan Miller fivehole in overtime of the Gold Medal game at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics vs. USA to win Canada's first Men's Ice Hockey Gold on Canadian soil.
1. With the eight game series tied at three wins and a tie each after seven games and the USSR less than a minute away from winning the 1972 Summit Series with a game 8 tie by virtue of a higher goal differential, Paul Henderson mysteriously calls Peter Mahovlich off the ice with time winding down and makes a wild stab for the puck and falls into the boards. He gets back up and shoves in the rebound from Phil Esposito's shot to put Canada ahead 6-5 with 34 seconds left. Canada holds on to win the Summit Series. Спорт
I was in 6th grade in '72 and we practically blew the roof off the school when Henderson scored. Yes, I remember this whole country stood still September 28th, 1972. What a great day to be Canadian!!
The final game of the 1972 series brought Canada to a standstill: across the country, streets were empty and people were glued to TV and radio. This has never been repeated for any other series. Henderson was outstanding in the series, and scored a goal that many millions of Canadians remember their entire lives: the most iconic goal in hockey history, for Canadians. Yet for all this, Henderson is not inducted into the Hall of Fame. If the winning goals for games 6 & 7 do not qualify as famous, then what does?
The goal by Peter Mahovlich in game 2 of the 72 summit series should be on this list.
Never any doubt which goal meant the most in Canadian hockey. If you were alive to witness 72,you know it was far more than just a "hockey series".
@ThousandThrills Agreed. Also, a lot of people forget that back in the 80's the Canada Cup was the most important international hockey tournament around. This is because professionals were still barred from participating in the Olympics, and the IIHF Men's Tourney (then as is now) took place during the NHL playoffs so many of the world's best players didn't attend. The Canada Cup was the only place you could see the best from each country compete against each other without restriction.
Well For Canada yes but for Europe no
Tough to argue with these great goals... but I have another. A lot of people forget about Game 2 of the 1987 Canada Cup. That one went into double-overtime and Canada was facing elimination because the Soviets had won the first game in Montreal. And of course, Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky teamed up on that game winner as well. Gretzky says that was the best game he ever played.
We can all say Canada is the best at hockey 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 proud to be Canadian
Exactly. There is so much that makes it number 1, but maybe the biggest thing is the score and current situation before that goal. There's 30 or so seconds left and it's a tie but Russia has more wins than Canada. If Henderson doesn't score, the USSR wins and the entire Canadian nation is dethroned as the best hockey nation in the world and the team becomes a disgrace. If Crosby doesn't score, overtime continues and Canada likely continues to dominate.
Coffey breaking up the Soviet 2-on-1 and then bringing the puck out of his own end was the single most exciting play that wasn't a goal.
I was born 5 yrs after Henderson, and was just 10 in 1987 and didnt appreciate hockey much back then. But I can tell you that I remember the Eberle goal in 2008 and it still gives me chills. And Sid the kid last February was the Henderson/Lemieux moment of my lifetime, beyond a doubt. ...But I have the 72 series on DVD, and have watched it countless times. But oh how I wish I was taken back in time to that September afternoon. My dad heard Cole call it on the radio.
Henderson's goal in game 7 in '72 should be on the list. Him alone against 4 russians and he gets through them to score. Unreal goal.
Agreed. PH said it was the prettiest goal he ever scored. For pure skill - it could be #!
"Can you believe it!?!?!?!"
"I can, because of the fact that...."
Rofl
Henderson's game 8 goal was great from a historical perspective but it was his game 7 goal that was truly one of the greatest goals ever.
Agreed. PH said it was the prettiest goal he ever scored. For pure skill - it could be #!
I thank God everyday that Pierre Maguire was not in the booth for #2.
RyanB35 can you believe it? “I can......”
@@jaderichards1578 It was a magical moment ugh
Number two shall go to Paul Henderson again during summit 72 game 7 ...full solo effort dekes through two defenders and finish it
Great choices for #1, #2, and #3... without a doubt the 3 most iconic/important goals in Canadian hockey history. I love this game, and I love this country. It's our game.
For the Sakic goal shown here for the Olympics I think the best single play in that game was the non-play of Lemieux, faking like he was going to take a pass from, I believe Pronger if memory serves, but letting it go through his legs to Kariya who scored. Amazing, pretty much anyone else would not have had the immediate presence of mind to do that.
NOW, don't get me wrong with regards to Sakic he was IMO clearly the Canadian MVP in that game, what a clutch performance
Alan Corbould a
Sakic is a legend!
Overrated
here's a shot, Henderson took a wild stab for and fell, here's another shot, right in front, they SCORE!!!!! Henderson has scored for Canada!
I think Paul Kariya's goal from 2002 gold medal game should be on there... SICK goal with the faked shot by lemieux that he let go through his legs.
All stupendous goals, but for me Crosby's Golden Goal is #1. To be hosting the Olympics, with so many fans there and all over the country cheering on our team, to win it on home ice in OT! The joy and pride we all felt at that moment was unforgettable!
1972 was more important; more Canadians watched that game 8 than watched the Olympic gold medal game, and that was on a weekday afternoon. Schools wheeled TVs into classrooms; offices closed and bars opened so people could watch the game. The country basically shut down as over 80% of the population watched that game 8. 'Henderson has scored for Canada!' is Canada's 'where were you when...' moment. Crosby's goal is great, but nothing beats game eight.
coffey and tonelie were awesome in 84
Well done. The ranking was perfect. Some amazing goals over the years. Canadian players have so much passion for the game.
gotta love the passion hockey gives ya
great Canadian Hockey :) awesome
3:41 Czech goalie - Hey! I always wanted to be a defenseman!
Nash's goal is soooo awesome! Sittler's 'double undressing' goal is just head-shaking.
Don Cherry was one of the coaches on that team, and told Sittler to fake the shot on the Czech goalie since he was coming out so far. Cherry was a hell of a smart coach.
Sittlers goal was the goal of my generation
I will never forgive Pierre McGuire for completely ruining the call on Eberle's goal. Amazing goal, amazing commentary originally, then just crash and burn.
What in the blue hell did he say? I've listened to it 100 times, but like most of what of comes from him....... IT MAKES NO SENSE!
This fall will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series. It seems like yesterday.
Great compilation pal.. Awesome.
Well done!
As an Avalanche fan and American, I couldn't be prouder that it was Sakic scoring that goal in 2002 - if it was gonna be anyone to crush us Americans, I'm glad it was Super Joe.
This list makes sense. Top 3 is where I would rank them.
I considered it but the one in game 8 is a much bigger goal that directly led to winning the series and I wanted to keep the goals to the most important one in each tournament.
What the heck was Dzurilla doing that far out of the net on the Sittler goal in 1976?
When he got by him, he practically had an open net!
Apparently, Don Cherry was doing scouting, and he told the Canadian brass how to beat Dzurilla by faking a shot, then going around. They had just been blasting away and he gave them no angle. So, the Brass told Cherry to go down to the bench and tell the coach, and...voila!
Great vid.
thank u!!
Beautiful
I still get goosebumps watching the Eberle goal. I remember telling my step dad once the Russian's iced the puck and were laughing, "we're gonna score".
6:10 I was there for that game, my most memorable Team Canada goal by far!
Great collection!
Go Canada Go!
JJoee! Sakic!! Scores!!! I get chills when hear that.
These are all great. But in the end, the most important is Paul Henderson.
#4 always gives me goose bumps :3
“Surely that’s gotta’ be enough!” is one of the most epic Bob Cole calls of all time!
Man, Eberle is so clutch.
1987 Canada Cup was the best Hockey ever and that was the # 1 goal how any Hockey fan can think anything different is beyond me
Because as good as it was, it wasn't as important as 1972. 72 wasn't just a hockey series; it was the Cold War on Ice. By 1987, the Russians were familiar; in 1972, they might as well have been from the Moon. I saw the 1987 Canada Cup, and it was awesome. But 72 is untouchable; nothing will ever top that moment in Canadian hockey history.
@@MrSprigg
87 Canada played skilled Hockey
If you seen 72 you know they had to goon it up to win
They played like pigs
87 was great Hockey not some slap shot shit
@@rethink62 This isn't a list of the 10 most skilled goals, it's the 10 biggest - and there's no comparison, as big at the '87 Canada Cup was.
@@pastorfergus
Ok
It’s still wrong
@@rethink62 I have seen 72. I watched the Russians spear the Canadians, slash the backs of their legs, even kick with their skates without consequence, while the refs called penalties on Canada for far less. The exhibition games against Sweden were even worse. Wayne Cashman didn't play the games in Russia because a Swedish player nearly amputated his tongue with a stick.
As for skill...Esposito, Cournoyer, Henderson, Park, Ellis, the Mahovlich brothers, Ratelle, Mikita, Lapointe, Savard...there was a lot of skill on that team.
Coffey scored the gol in the first video. Assist to John Tonelli. Bossy was behind the net.
I agree with you Shane! Im a vancouverite and will be paying for those games for a while yet! Go Hawks !
@jeroliver No, youre right. The first time I saw it was on an old 13" black and white tv my parents had downstairs. Everytime since, I've never managed to see the dangle part, only the shot. I don't know how in Canada after all these years every replay I've seen of it never showed the puck flip, but ya that was 10x better than I remember it.
People like you just look at the stats and come to a conclusion from that. Yeah, the Soviets dominated, but why? Well from 1954-91, the Soviets played with professional players. Every other team would be using amateur players. The results would have been way more different if every country had an equal shot
#3...love how the Russian d-man anticipates the cross ice pass about 1.5 seconds too early, slides and ends up in the corner lol if i had Gretzky and Lemieux coming down at me, I'd probably just give up too haha
and both Gretzky and Lemieux used Murphy as a decoy. You just KNOW he wanted the puck so bad.
The first game ever against the Russians will always be remembered as #1 by those of us alive at the time.
yo im very surprised you chose henderson over crosby, i like the decision tho, it was a much bigger goal politically
Gretzky to Lemieux in 87 is the greatest of all time
I was glad for the goal, but Howerchuck’s awful hook on #10 ruined the play & the chance for a clean outcome.
All though it was a series winning goal if that is the criteria Pete Mahovs short handed goal was the best of the summit series on both sides.
DAMN -THOSE CANADIANS CAN -PLAY HOCKEY
Sittler had the best goal....he was told , well the team, to fake a slapshot and go in
Great list, I think the order is fine
When we send our best against the world best Canada shows it superiority.o
Chills when I watch this
good
Great list. Would just swap number 2 and 3 with each other. Otherwise, this list is spot on
Soviets technically had amateur players, they were amateur because that they were unpaid
But they were trained like professionals
je crois sincèrement qu'une équipe étoile canadienne qui s'entraînerait avec les méthodes TiKhonov serait imbattable...toutes ces victoires canadiennes étaient le fruit de 4-5 semaines seulement d'acclimatation souvent laborieuses...
Sittler's '76 game and series OT winner should be in at # 4 or 5
God, I love vintage Bob Cole.
@dn5575 i'll sum it up like this: if henderson didn't score that goal, hockey would've been russia's game and not canada's
Shane are you kidding me Lambert
These are some fantastic fucking goals!
Its to bad the teams don't go by owners too. Dallas was sold to a Canadian owner, same with Phoenix. Even though the NHL took that one back... There's still a lot of American teams with Canadian owners so technically we got more teams hehe!
Yes
So shootout goals are greater than Larmer's unassisted, shorthanded goal in '91, stripping the guy who put Gretzky out of the tournament with a crosscheck. Alrighty, then.
With all do respect you missed the biggest goal of all. Game 7 - 72 Summit series Paul Henderson. If that doesn’t happen #1 doesn’t happen.
Agreed. PH said it was the prettiest goal he ever scored. For pure skill - it could be #!
From a Canadian, unfortunately we do not always have manners when it comes to hockey but I would venture to guess that most Canadians are embarrassed if fellow Canucks do not show due respect to other countries
Pierre macguire great call
#3 should definitely have been #1
I'll put it at #2, but no chance it beats Henderson.
@Conquerer13 ur right
@TheChrisss97
I would say #3 should be before #2...Lemieux and Gretzky together, you can't compare any of this with Crosby's lucky goal..but yeah it was nice to win over the USA last winter.
In order to see who's #1 it has to be best vs best, that automatically means olympics pre 1998 is not valid because it's russia/soviets pro's vs our amateur's and that irrelevant amateur bush league tournament where nhl rejects and nhl'ers not contending for the cup go called the world championship, so that means canada cup/ world cup and olympics 98 and onward. so according to the statistics canada is up on russia / soviets 8 wins- 4 loses - 2 ties this is all round robin and knockout games.
I still think the bedt
@villemoilol as an American who loves and plays hockey, I can't agree enough with you. I've played up in canada a few times, and each time we got our asses kicked. I wish i could live and play hockey there. Although I think the U.S. is a top competitor to Canada. Example: 2010 olmpics. we beat you in the preliminaries and took you to OT in the gold medal game. Guys like Rafalski, Kane, Kessel, Miller are pretty good, although you guys have the majority of all the good players.
#3 and #2 should be switched. Lemieux's goal in the '87 Canada Cup is more important than Crosby's goal in the olympics
No dummy. Olympics is more important than the Canada Cup
mario and sittler's goal both should be rated higher
@@jimanderson7648
#1 = Henderson
#2 = Crosby
#3 = Lemieux
#4 = Bossy (Coffey assist). 1984 was quite a dark period as Canada lost '81 Canada Cup, and NHL All-stars lost to Russians.
No offense to the Juniors, but those just don't have the same weight as the Men's.
Crosby shouldnt be rated # 2 he did nothing to speak of another than score that goal same as Sittler didnt have a great series either Mario should be #2 he had a great series
@raran44 well yea and it was the greatest goal in the biggest series in hockey history.
Nash wow
1. 1972. 2.CC 1987. 3.CC 1984. The rest I do not care - any order
@91splash
Gord Miller must of wanted to kill him. He gets the oppertunity to call an amazing moment in Canadian Hockey history and Pierre just takes it away.
6:03 Ryan Ellis don’t block that it’s over. A fine 🇨🇦
Switch 2 with 3
I rly didn't like the choice for the first one the rest gave me goose bumps so I expected # 1 to be amazing but I was dissapointed it didn't seem that great
@raran44 hell no dude crosby's goal was huge but henderson's goal was bigger.
Oh goodness no, so close. 2 and 3 need to change. Golden goal was huge for sure. But Gretzky to Lemieux in Canada Cup was almost as important as Henderson when you consider the times. Soviets still dominating olympics and world championships Canada Cup was our way to show we were still the best. We already had Olympic gold when Sid scored. It was huge, bud not number two.
"this guy is unbelievable!"
"yes he is"
wtf?
Sorry but Number 2, Crosby's gold medal goal is the one that can't be topped. Because of that gold we had the most Golds won by a host Country in the Olympics EVER. That's untoppable.
I. G. G. Y.; then
Quick Release!
There have been many Olympics; there will never be another Summit Series. There will never be another series that transcends sport the way 1972 did. Crosby's goal was a great moment, but it didn't define hockey as Canada's game. Henderson's goal did.
Evidence: Gretzky retired in 1999.
Bro, I thought Canadians had manners... :p
sydney crosby's goal was good and it may deserve to be number one but Paul henderson's was way better
hockey is canadas sport!
There's the Henderson goal and then there are the other goals.
Anyone notice that gretzky and lemieux are arguabl
