    First use a set of plans draw by a Building Designer/ Architect who has had field experience working as a framing carpenter. He/ she knows what the people in the field need to see on the plans to get the JOB DONE!

      Not many of those left in California, but I definitely agree. We’ve always said it should be minimum 1-3 years in the field before drawing plans..

      @MattBangsWood I'd say there are not many of them anywhere for that matter! Same thing with automotive engineers that make poor designs screwing over the mechanic. I'm now seeing this trend in many trades. Engineers in the automotive industry should be required to work atleast 5 years as a mechanic before going to school to be an automotive engineer. Atleast in carpentry, there may be few architects and engineers throughout the rural parts of the US who have worked in the field for some time before becoming architects. You know, someone who's been on both sides of the white-collar/blue collar fence. Who knows.

    Man i wish i had done my life differently. I didn't pay near enough attention in most framing jobs i had and spent too much time between framing jobs. As a result I'm 32 and feel a real lack of confidence between what i know i could be worth and proving it. Channels like yours are helping. Thank you for making these.

      Read that middle line.. “I’m 32”.
      You’re a child, my man. You’re young. You aren’t even in your prime..
      You ever want to sit down and go over plans 1-on-1, let’s do it. I’d be happy to help you out with anything.

      @MattBangsWood wow, thanks man that was unexpected. Kay well i may or may not very well sit down and come up with a short list of big questions i have. Thanks.
      And ya i know I'm still young lol. Hell i even built some easy breezy cookie cutter prefabs leading a couple younger friends a few years ago. Kinda fell off the rails so to speak right after. 😑

      Hi Matt, I’m 51 years old and have always wanted to learn carpentry in the field, but my trade was as a mechanic and in hvac. At my age, would you recommend starting a career as a carpenter as an apprentice, and if so, how would you advise me to get started? Thank you for all your videos, you’re amazing and i absolutely love watching everything you’ve passionately put together for your viewers!

    Thanks Matt for the lesson. When you cut the headers in advance, do you wait until are more built-up or as you go/need? Same goes for the support 2x4 and 2x6 please?

    • @tigadirt
      @tigadirt 25 дней назад

      I don't know how much there is out there for that sort of thing. Framers don't usually end up writing books. There is two names i can think of though called Larry Haun and Norm Abram.
      There used to be a couple shows on television called 'this old house' and 'the new yankee workshop'. Hope that helps.

    Why don't you go into framing multifamily projects?

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  7 месяцев назад

      No money in it unless you’re overly efficient with massive crews that don’t have problems..
      Multi family in the area pays $12-14/ft. Custom pays $25-40/ft.
      I can build 3,000SF custom for $99,000 in labor.. or 8,000SF multi family for $99,000.

      @@MattBangsWood I was the PM for a general contractor on a 400 unit / 450k sqft apartment complex. The framer’s contract alone was $10mill
      You have got to get into that.

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  7 месяцев назад

      Is that labor only? If so it’s not terrible at $22/ft.

  • @OperationDarkside

    Very educational. I would have preferred a different order of explanation, though. It's probably a personality thing, but I would have liked the grid part to be first. It helps me with orientation. Basically from rough to detail, instead of detail to rough. My preffered order would be orientation, rough, detail, pitfalls. Might be just me, though.
    However, overall a good video.

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  8 месяцев назад +2

      Unfortunately, I’m a carpenter and not a teacher. I just roll the camera and go over things..
      I forget what is known and what is unknown.

      @@OperationDarksideIf you're watching on mobile, you will notice at the bottom of the video with the time bar minutes/minutes in, there will be the "chapters" with changing titles as the video plays. Click on the little arrow from the right and to the right of your screen, a list of all the time stamped chapters will appear with thumbnails for each one and you can play each chapter in whatever orientation you want. Hope this helps!

    Second a simpler set of smaller house plans for demonstration and explanation would make the presentation easier to follow without getting lost in detail because of the larger house size. "Keep it simple stupid."
