UNEARTHED ARCANA 2022 CLERIC AND REVISED SPECIES
This document is the third in a series of Unearthed Arcana articles that present material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. The material here uses the rules in the 2014 Player’s Handbook, except where noted. Providing feedback on this document is one way you can help shape the next generation of D&D! Inside you’ll find the following content:
Cleric Class. The Cleric Class is available for playtesting, along with one Subclass: the Life Domain. More Subclasses will appear in Unearthed Arcana in the months ahead.
Revised Species. Three revised Species appearin this document: the Ardling, the Dragonborn, and the Goliath.
Rules Glossary. In this document, any term in the body text that is underlined appears in a glossary at the end. The glossary defines game terms that have been clarified or redefined for this playtest or that don’t appear in the 2014 Player’s Handbook.
    THIS IS PLAYTEST MATERIAL
This article is presented for playtesting and feedback. The material here is experimental and is in draft form. It isn’t officially part of the game. Your feedback will help determine whether we adopt it as official.
    HOW TO PLAYTEST THIS MATERIAL
We invite you to try out this material in play. When you do so, you’re welcome to combine this article with the “Character Origins” (August 2022) and “Expert Classes” (September 2022) articles.
If you do combine this article with any previous one, use only the rules glossary found
here. In the One D&D Unearthed Arcana series, the rules glossary of each article supersedes the glossary of any previous article.
To play with this material, you may either incorporate it into your campaign or run one or more special playtest sessions. For such a session, you may create an adventure of your
own or use a short adventure from a source like Journeys through the Radiant Citadel or
    Candlekeep Mysteries.

I would actually love if they made it a feat! I still think racial/ancestry feats are good just have them focus on improving abilities the races get as supposed to giving them entirely new abilities that lock them out from the others. With an exception for ones that give the races back the older racial abilities that had to be cut from the baseline versions.
Just make sure the feat improves something else than *just* the extra attack modification, like either more dice so non-martials are still incentivized to get it or fold in the special breath weapon types into the feat!

    • @gallaros9
      @gallaros9 Год назад +1

@jemm13 DB breath weapons suffer the same issue as martials. The scaling is just not on pace with casting. It's why I like the new metalic dragonborn option, as you get a pretty sweet utility breath weapon that is useful no matter the level.
Also, that's why I like ttrpgs. On the table, rules can always be bent in ways to make it more fun

I was fine with Goliaths as they were in Monsters of the Multiverse and was almost afraid they got rid of stone's endurance as I was reading but was relieved to see they kept it for the specific subtype of goliath you are. I was also fine with Goliaths only be descended from Stone Giants before but sure, have them come from other giants as well. Why not? A bit sad cold resist is left off but oh well.
I am still underwhelmed by Ardlings, but only because the race itself is just 'meh' to me as far as flavor.
Pleased the Dragonborn have been updated but darkvision is starting to be a bit too overused for my tastes. I wish there was less use of it.
Overall I am pleased to see a shift to making the species more narrowed in that subspecies (hill dwarves, stout halfling, etc) are left off in the PHB as I believe they will add these subspecies to specific campaign settings with their own benefits unique to those campaign settings.

hey on page 10 of the new ONE D&D UA
Regarding the Large Form for Goliath's I noticed that there is no Damage addition other than advantage on STR checks and a speed increase. Is this done on purpose? Enlarge/Reduce only adds a single d4 to weapon attacks, the fighter sub-class rune knight feature giant's might has an additional d6 to weapon attacks which increases to a single d8 @10th level, and I believe in the DMG on page 293(I can't remember off the top of my head rn) the only mention of an increase of size correlating to an increase of damage output is when coming up with the base damage of the weapon for every size a stage up from medium is to add an additional weapon die.
Personally I like the idea of combining the d4 with enlarge/reduce and the DMG's additional weapon damage die to help boost my player's ability to do damage in regular 5th edition. as getting hit with the spell to grow in size should offer an additional bit of damage outside of the increase in # of damage die. Makes players using the option to grow big and break everything empowered.
Is there an intended effect on damage when a Goliath at 5th level grows in size to do additional damage or is the intention just to grow big?
I find issue with the latter statement in regards to the video as the purpose of adding the goliath to the PHB is to provide players with another option for a certain archetype. the Goliath's racial ability will be redundant for a Goliath Barbarian will already have advantage on STR checks and saving throws as well as an additional 10ft of movement in D&D5e. The recommended height for a goliath in both the playtest and Elemental Evil Player's Companion is 7-8ft. which is just about a foot shorter than what it takes to be considered large.
Hope this encourages some kind of discussion.

    Preadator (lion, tiger, snake, etc):
You gain a bonus to your passive stealth and stealth ability checks equal to your pb. The first time per combat you attack with a melee Weapon while being hidden, you deal extra 1d6 damage of that type.

Similar things can be said for for cold as there are numerous way to reduce movement in a turn that stacks. Keeping your enemies immobile is good even a caster which these work on since they don't require weapons and just attack rolls and damage to be dealt.

and then it's made so you get to pick two animal ancestry options at level one, another one at level three, and one more at level five
with the flavour being that ardlings gain their divine animal features as they grow, and different ardlings get them at different times (so a cat kid may have senses and climbing and jumping while a young adult might only have divine magic and senses)

Had commented this on the other cleric video but
Ardlings are still cool, the new ancestry is nifty and really does make things work for letting you flavor as you will. The flyer option feels rather week out of all of them but that isn't too bad given the jump action doesn't count as part of your movement so it still is useful. it feels closer to being good but its still missing something that i cant put my finger on
Dragonborns are much better now and they addressed alot of what i was worried about in my survey such as the full action breath weapon which is now part of the action if you have multi attacks. Being able to chose either line or cone is beneficial and amuses me as i imagine dragons practicing tongue placements to focus it :p as well as the damage scaling is better. the flight is a nice bonus and isn't overpowered all round no notes
Goliath seems like they should just call it a half giant at this point . The unique traits are all interesting though Hills tumble having no save to resist prone seems peculiar. I was concerned about large form for a moment as i was concerned with interactions with rune knight but that one already specifies smaller than large so you don't have to worry about gargantuan rune knights.

I personally don't think there should be different types of goliath. In Volo's Guide it's noted that the Goliath are defended from giants. In my experience, good fantasy is rooted but not locked into reality. Saying that there are fire goliath and stone goliath and ice goliath really doesn't make sense evolutionarily: that wouldn't be one speices: that'd be extreme coincidental convergence on one niche. It should really be: all goliath decended from one kind of giant but branching into different groups. Maybe you have moss goliath and cave goliath and forge goliath but saying each type comes from a different giant type is dumb. The dragonborn just barely pulled something like this off because they're assumed to be mythological or alchemical in nature.

Yes I am aware of this. However, saying that five different kinds of giant evolving into the same human sized niche doesn't make sense. You could say that there are differing types of goliath which split and are culturally associated with the giant types but of course that isn't the case. What I intended when I said Dragonborn are mythological or alchemical in nature is that it's somewhat implied based on what's written about the guard drake that dragonborn arose as alchemically. Not that we actually get any lore about dragonborn to begin with. We don't even get a brief description of any kind of culture aside from the faint implication of dragonborn being "nomadic". Saying a people group is tribal describes advancement and structure, it doesn't describe architecture, norms, taboo, music, art, clothing styles, lifestyle, or any kind of material or non material culture. Please don't suggest that D&D is a game about making your own worlds because, as much as I enjoy doing that, D&D is marketed as a setting: not just a rules system. Critiquing D&D's lore is not _"insulting 20 years of game history."_
Dungeons & Dragons is a creative *_mess._*

So far from the UA Doc i personally, love the Dragonborn changes. The Breath Weapon change is great. The Wings at lvl 5 on top of that actually makes it even very strong and a top tier class if not even a little too strong ^^.
The Goliath is great, the perfect counterpart of the Dragonborn being Dragon flavored, Goliaths being Giant descent flavored is awesome. Growing large as ability and some additional effects are nice, may need a bit of tweaking, but great design choice.
The Ardling is a lot better now than it was before:
But still not fully there, I think. Firstly, they need to change the "An Ardling has a head resembling that of an
animal" wording into one that allows players to choose whether they want a full animal looking head or just partly traits of one like just the ears, eyes etc, more like this "An Ardling has a head showing animal like traits or even completely like one. Also, the keen sense is great and the little divine spark magic is also a nice touch to keep it lore aligned. But to be honest, the abilities are a bit of lack luster for the options. Swimmer is nice, a resistance and a speed, climber gives a speed and a natural weapon added to Unarmed strikes, which won't always come up for anyone who isn't a monk. The running speed is a bit over the top for the runners and the fly speed feels really nurfed should just be a fly speed but limit to no armor at all or so.

It's cool to have climbing and swimming Ardlings, but the playtest rules for swimming and climbing are still skewed. You are stuck with 1 type of speed during a Move and can't change it, even if the numbers are equal. If you are 10 ft from water, you can't just run the 10 feet, jump from the shore and swim the remaining 20 in the same Move. That's a big flop.

    • @XanderHarris1023
      @XanderHarris1023 Год назад +2

I think this is a either misunderstanding or misinterpretion of the rule. The goal for the wording change was so people didn’t use 10 ft. of their walking speed and think they still had 30 ft. of swimming speed left. Using one speed means you pick one of your speeds and stick to it. You can still walk 10 ft. Swim 10 ft. and then walk ten more feet all using your 30 ft. Swim speed. You can not walk 10 ft. Swim 30 ft. and then walk 20 more feet using your 30 ft. Walking and 30 feet swimming speed.

I'm predicting that the Monk's Martial Arts feature will allow you to use Dexterity for your grappling escape DC. (Thinking about how judo and BJJ work, this would make so much sense.) At that point, the best grappler build in the game will be a Hill Giant Goliath Monk, who will be easily able to pronelock Huge creatures without the otherwise requisite dip into Rune Knight.

I'm definitely gonna check out the Goliath tomorrow.
For those interested, here are my size rules with Dark Sun Halfgiants in mind:
A positive size modifier costs 6 points and gives a +4 Str/Con, -4 Dex and two special benefits (increased movement and/or physical damage reduction). It doubles the weight of the character.
A negative size modifier gives 6 extra points and does the exact opposite.
You buy these in a step in character creation. In short you get 66 points for base ability scores (6+2d4 scores or a 14 12 12 10 10 8 array) with a number of points (6 or 12) to increase base scores or spend on a size modifier. Advanced settings like Dark Sun, the Underdark and the Outer Planes should have 12, but DMs can choose the number for any setting.
Note points can be spend to increase base scores up to 14, with supernatural increases to 15 and 16 costing double. Skills and magic give an enhancement bonus of up to +4.
Note with two size increases (+8 -8 +8 and 4 benefits) this removes the penalties to mental stats to halfgiants/goliaths, but uses up all 12 points. But you can still increase stats later. I made the halfgiants a little smaller, they are only 4 times the weight of humans, at roughly 800 pounds and around 9-10' tall.
Note in my house rules I have many more feats and ability score increases, so epic characters will be really epic. You kind of build towards advanced beings from the start, in a similar way Drow and Outer Planars in 3E had a mix of ECL and racial or paragon levels. This is mixed with an weakened but cooler version of psion.

You're already adding goliaths to it, a race that wasn't there before and that already appeared in an updated version, why not aasimars as well? By what it was said it sounded that there will be a universal dragonborn ( gem/ chro/ metal ) and a specific dragonborn with having chromatics, gems and metallics more distinct and focused. BTW not quite relevant to this video but..4 sub classes each??? Ok. For my favs the Ranger, Sorcerer and Fighter I hope. Draconic Bloodline, Wild magic, Shadow sorc and divine/ clockwork/ aberrant ... Gloom Stalker, Drake Warden, Beast Master/ Horizon Walker and the one tested, Hunter combined with Monster Slayer which makes sense. Beastmaster and Drake Warden COULD be combined to say Beast Warden and at lvl 3 choose which path of companion you want. A draconic summonable soul buddy of chromatic/ gem/ metallic type, a chance to tame a potentially very strong wild animal with strong bond that can very well DIE or its close Tasha version with a spirit companion from land/ sea/ air. For Fighter I just hope the rework the Purple Dragon Knight to just DRAGON KNIGHT. So we can choose any main 5 or less known true dragon type of chromatic/ gem/ metallic families. I would be a true Purple dragon knight but NOT of serving a purplish ass aged Black dragon. No, Im talking about the 4e underdark, roamy, plasma spewing, neighbour of the shroom sniffing Deep dragon, the Purple energy dragon! You've done away with literally everything fun about the original: the markings, the lithoderms, the playful attitude, the naming scheme losing its Hawaiian-inspired touch.
If you wanted a more interesting and unique Goliath, you should have brought the "Markings of" feats from Races of Stone and transferred them to the One D&D Goliath. Showcase them as being modern but still built upon the creature it was originally thought of. Make their Lithoderms give a bonus to armor class or something like that.
If you called it "giantkin", I'd actually like it; it's a fun quasi-giant option.
But that's not what the goliaths were originally conceived as. A half-giant half-goliath spawned a "Feral Gargun"; goliaths were conceived of as being non-giant and anti-giant.
P.S. It's also somewhat of a lie/retcon to say "we've always been looking at the Stone Giant Goliath". The original and 4e goliath were not giantkin at all, and were clearly intended as a standalone species.

@@jonp8015 so if being large is being very athletic, why then not give them proficiency in the Athletics skill? 😅

@@dynestis2875 To clarify, my point is that their added proficiency was to reflect the fact that they are very large, but now they can reflect being large by simply *being large.*
Missing cold resistance is kind of a bummer though.

How will this affect the Rune Knight, if that's still a sub-class.

as is rune knight specifies you can only become large if your not already large so they worded it to prevent interaction i believe but you can still make them huge if you have enlarge/reduce

Seems like it creates a redundancy, that also kind impacts barbarian cuz u can't stack advantage to strength checks.
