    Aesthetically, I’m always gonna go for the OBS. Just is all around tough looking and the nostalgia of the “smokers window” and the push button door handles. An F350 crew cab long bed 7.3 with 4x4 is the Holy Grail of trucks IMO.

      That's awesome, a 6 speed 7.3, so cool! It sounds like you got a steal of a deal with such low miles. A good place to look online for more info would be the forums like powerstroke.org or fordtrucks.com I believe. Heck if you have any questions I know a thing or two as well. FYI, familiarize yourself with the cam position sensor, ICP sensor, and IPR. Just knowing what they do will help save you a bunch of headaches. Those are the most troublesome part of the 7.3, especially the cam position sensor. Have fun!

    I have owned a lot of Fords. The obs is by far my favorite. The power lacks by far in the old 7.3s compared to my 2002 7.3. I still prefer the old ones. I know I am going to get a lot of negative comments from this comment, But I love the sound of a 90s 7.3 over any 12 valve Cummins. The old 7.3s just sound good. I was diesel before diesel was cool.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  5 лет назад +4

      We're mostly 7.3/ Ford guys here, so I don't think you'll have to worry about negative feedback! You say the OBS lacks in power relative to the SD, and that is true in stock form, but believe me, after a set of 160cc/00% injectors and an Intercooler, my OBS will beat the socks off a stock SD without even trying. Unless you're talking about the 7.3 idi, which is also an awesome engine, but it is definitely down on power comparable to the SD 7.3. There is one other thing those 12 valve guys are really missing out on though, besides having the cooler sounding engine... Electronic engine control. With that we can burn fuel so much cleaner and add performance a little easier at first too with just a tune. There's no school like old school, keep dieseling!

    Don't know how old you but as a 24yr guy that grew up building racing mowers mustangs and diesel truck it's nice to see another young guy driving a truck an actually know what he has. Mines a L99 and I've got 355k and never had one of the sticks pulled. The 7.3 is the Cadillac of the million mil diesel engines. Slower than a 6.0 and not as fuel efficient as the 6.7 but it will out last them. Love my 6.0 if im Running late though😉

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад +2

      That's awesome, It sounds like you've been in the field of making engines run fast for a long time, I'm sure you know more about it than I do, and I'm sure it must be fun too! I'm only 21 years old for the time being, so I don't have a whole lot of cash on hand to make my truck not so slow. 7.3's sure do last a long while, you've got that one right. Heck I guess they really don't make enough power to hurt themselves. I'm sure that 6.0 is quick! I hope to maybe get me one of those one day, get my hands dirty with it and have some more experience working on a slightly newer model. It also would be cool to experiment and see what else can be done to the 6.0 to make it more reliable in the long term, and heck, of course make the old 7.3 faster too!
      With 355k miles, do you think you'll replace injectors anytime soon? I've got the same mileage on mine, and surely it couldn't hurt to have new sticks?

    • @philipk8314
      @philipk8314 6 лет назад +1

      Rnddiesel Oh Lord! I see I shouldn't comment when it's late lol. I've just been doing upgrades for fuel and longevity: 1.15 van turbo w/ats housing, a cnc fab pump and a few other fuel mods. Hybrid Injectors are next. I'm not looking to make a rocket ship out of it. But, a hydra tune, sticks and maintaining my maturity in her is the plan... "plan". I've done a the 05+ axle swap and dash swap. Axle upgrade by far was my favorite. Your video is very knowledgeable, un biased and accurate. My 6.0 truck is a monster but it's injectors won't still be around at 300+.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад +1

      Haha, no I just get up that early, I like the morning, get to have coffee. It sounds like you've got quite a bit of mods done to your truck, heck it probably looks like a new truck with the dash swap! With hybrid injectors you can really pump out a lot of power with a single HPOP. My main goal is to get my truck to run like my Dad's 2013 LML Duramax, 397 hp and 765 ft*lbs with a VGT turbo like the 6.0, that thing takes off like a jackrabbit! Only hopefully the 7.3 will be much cheaper.

International sure knows how to make engines, and the injection technology for the time of the 7.3 was way more advanced than the all mechanical 5.9 Cummins. Yet the 7.3 still runs like a workhorse even with electronics. Gotta love 7.3's!

      I have a 2000 F350 4X4, 4R100 automatic transmission, crew cab, long bed, single rear wheel, with about 190,000 miles on it. Everything is stock original. I bought it used in 2009 for $15,000. I did have to replace the cam position sensor not long after I purchased it. The truck was missing that overdrive button when I bought it, still don't have one for it. Power lock motors don't work but found out that is a common problem that can be fixed by taking them out and drilling out the rivets and then use aluminum foil as a replacement for the contactors. I have not performed that fix yet, I'm being lazy and just manually lock them. I run Rotella T6 full synthetic for the oil. Changed out the rear differential fluid a couple years ago with Amsoil fluid. I did have the problem with the air conditioner cycling on/off but I read about cleaning and possibly shimming the AC clutch thing up in the engine compartment, that fixed that but I have another AC problem that is called the blend door. Have you had these problems? I live in Round Rock, Texas and we need AC here otherwise you will suffer in the summer. Where are you located and tell us more about your truck.

    The reason on the OBS turbo has the 1.15 turbine housing is to try to keep the exhaust temp below 1250° pre turbo because of the lack of an intercooler. The OBS 7.3 Powerstroke actually was rated for less horsepower than a 7.3 idi with a Banks sidewinder turbo or one that had a Hypermax Pulse turbo and intercooler system on it. With a Banks Sidewinder on 7.3 idi it was rated at 262 flywheel horsepower and a 7.3 idi with a Hypermax Pulse turbo and intercooler were rated at 260 flywheel horsepower.

    One thing that you are not correct on is the PMR. The PMR was only run half year in 01. My 01 doesn't have the PMR. The main issues with the 7.3 in the late years was actually the wrist pins snapping.
    Turbos from the OBS were smaller than the NBS. Also, the split shots were supposed to be better for fuel economy, but but because of the primary and secondary shots, it actually killed the economy vs. the single shot injectors.
    My current build has a GTP38R turbo
    Banks intercooler
    Banks turbo back exhaust
    Swamps HVHF IDM
    30% over injectors
    CAI
    Custom PHP tunes
    And stage 1 trans.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад +1

      It sounds like you've got one heck of a build going on, I'm sure your 7.3 is fun to drive! I assume its a Super Duty with the GTP38R?
      I'd heard that the 7.3 got the PMRs past 2001, that somewhere down the road they found some sitting on the shelf and stuck them back in some late model 7.3's. Where did you hear about that? Also I thought the split shot was strictly for emissions, primarily noise emissions? Certainly International Engineers would've actually tested the fuel economy theory before making a run of over a million 7.3's with split shots, "hoping" to get better fuel economy. Not that I'm trying to pick or anything, I'm asking a legitimate questions. If I said something wrong, I'd like to learn so I can be correct. Besides, finding another source to learn about 7.3's is cool too. I'm too young to recall the history in person...
      By the way, how's your transmission holding up?

      Brother it's all good. I actually picked up a good bit while i worked with international, and the rest i got from people who made these trucks run "better" ( per say) like Vinny, owner of LFDP here in Ga.
      The trans had to be replaced, stage 1 sits in her now, i am in fact running a GTP38R turbo and quite a few other goodies as well.
      I have been thinking about going to code B injectors, stage 2 cam and GT42 turbo .
      The 7.3 can take a lot of punishment, more than people give it credit for.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад +2

      Wow, how cool that you worked with International! Pretty much everything I've learned comes from obsessively searching for endless hours on google and reading everything I can on the 7.3. I'm sure that GTP38R is pretty nice, how's the spool up time on that turbo?
      Yeah it seems like the weak spot for 7.3's is the darn transmission. Diesels just produce the power at a lower RPM which ultimately sends more torque through the transmission. Heck a gasser spinning twice the RPM of a diesel can basically transmit the same horsepower with half the torque of the diesel. Knock on wood my e4od is holding together for now...
      So do you drag race your 7.3 or is it just your fun DD?

    • @bryancenterfitt7127
      @bryancenterfitt7127 6 лет назад

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад +2

      That's quite the compliment, thank you! I'm definitely glad to help! You know there's many subtle differences between each truck that make them what they are, though 99 year model trucks are also quite unique. I didn't have really much time in the video to cover the 99 year model truck too. They tend to be a goofy model year that's more of a hybrid between the OBS and Super Duty that you may want to look into. Depending on whether you have an 'early' 99 or a 'late' 99 there can be a pretty large difference. You can verify this by your serial number and the build date, though I don't know the cutoff serial number off the top of my head. Early 99 7.3's for instance still had the smaller 2 inch intake plenums like the OBS. Also early 99's had smaller 130 cc injectors vs late model SD's 140cc, and there's more differences of course. I found a link to a forum I've done lots of reading on, and it gives a brief list of the differences in early 99 year model trucks.

    Great video! Enjoyed this a lot!
    Too bad you live in Texas, cause I would absolutely volunteer my 2001 F-250 for comparison. Cause I have the crew cab as well AND mine is 4 wheel drive too. The comfort of the ride in the Super Duty is definitely the two wheel drive/stock tire variant, cause I have the 4x4 with a bit meatier tires and driving it beats the s**t out of me from how rough it is 😂
    As far as my opinion on the 7.3:
    She's not the fastest or the strongest girl at the dance, and she's loud as hell. But treat her right and she'll outlive you! As long as you carry a spare CPS in the glove box and some oil (just in case) you'll never be left stranded by the 7.3.
    Plus it's relatively easy to work on! Love the sounds it makes and no goofy emission system making the engine ingest it's own waste.
    One thing the trucks in this video have in common: the engine is in bad need of a hose down! Don't be shy! Just cover and/or avoid the alternator, batteries, and fuse box and go to town!

    I've had all the Ford trucks. The later 7.3's blow the early nineties out of the water. Sweet spot was 99.5- 02.5, when they weakened the engines by dropping the forged rods. I like not having to deal with the Def and all that crap too. It does everything I want.

    Great comparison video! I sparked a few questions for me:
    1. Can I swap stock SD injectors into my OBS to make it more quiet and increase HP?
    2. What makes your '97 make more HP than earlier OBS 7.3's? (Also, is the 96 the same as the 97? I have heard those two years were the same).
    Thanks for all the good videos you make! Well informed and interesting!

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  3 года назад +2

      You can swap SD injectors into an OBS since the engines are internally the same (with some small changes, but still generally interchangeable parts), but you would need to have the truck tuned to run properly. Since Super Duty engines run split shot injectors to quiet them down, the injector dumps a smaller pilot amount of diesel into the chamber to get combustion started, then the rest of the fuel charge is injected giving the engine a quieter knock. I'm pretty sure you'd want to advance the timing so the fuel injectors are triggered earlier so that you can still get optimized performance. Most folks go the other way around and put OBS injectors in a SD since the single shot can dump more fuel into the combustion chamber in a shorter amount of time compared to the SD unit with the split shot, so I'd imagine tuning would be a bit of a challenge, but probably not impossible to find. Scratch that... I just remembered California model OBS trucks had split shot injectors! I'm sure you can find some tuning then for a California truck, grab a California ECM, but probably it's best to find some tunes specific to what you're wanting to do with the Injector combination you're proposing.
      On your second question I'm not so sure why the horsepower was stepped up. Such a small amount of 10 hp isn't huge. I'd imagine it's just different engine tuning that makes the difference. As far as I know the injectors and turbocharger are both the same. Their might be some subtle differences as well, but I'd bet it's more aggressive factory tuning more than anything. I will say now my 97 makes more hp than a stock 96 because my 97 has bigger injectors, a bigger exhaust, intercooler installed, and some aftermarket tuning which makes it a real fun truck to drive :-)

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад +1

      Kevin Jose yeah I really love my truck too, it's a great one! Okay, 7.3's are starting to get up there in age and accumulate a lot of miles, like mine with 357k miles now. My injectors are a bit worn, it still needs suspension work, and I'm currently fixing the AC... parts do get pricey on the engine though. Injectors are $1200 for stock units if you do the work yourself, and the aftermarket sensors are not that great, so you usually have to go to the Ford dealer for parts. Really though only 3 actually go out, the ICP sensor, $250 at dealer, cam position sensor ~$30 at dealer, and IPR $250 at the dealer. That being said, they don't go out often, and other than the cam position sensor, odds are you'll get years of life out of them. Oil is expensive. It literally takes 3.5 gallons of the good oil Rotella t4 is what I use, and filters are around $20 too unless you shop around. So oil changes are around $65 every 5k miles. Coming from a gasser Chevy, nothing about the 7.3 is cheaper. It's just awesome! 7.3's as daily drivers are slower than molasses, like you need to be careful when taking left turns, because it takes the turbo so long to spool. I daily mine, and it's good, just challenging to park at times. You know there's a lot more to talk about I'm not really giving the 7.3 justice here. If you give me some time perhaps I can make a video and put it up on the channel.

I’m a huge car enthusiast and love working on anything really. Just need a dependable rig to use on a daily basis. I’ve seen some trucks with around 100-150k miles asking 20-24k. Not sure if that’s overpriced or not.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад

      Yeah, 20-24k sounds a bit high. Both are legendary engines and it's not the easiest to find a diesel with under 200k miles on it. You pay a lot more for a low mileage rig over one that just needs a little work. Heck I picked up my truck for $4500 a year ago, and I've spent another $4500 on it thus far, but I've redone all the brakes, shocks, fixed the air conditioner, replaced a few sensors, serviced pretty much every fluid in the truck, replaced the radiator, and have even upgraded a few things along the way too!

    I’m 16 and I drive a 95 7.3 and I’ve redone the whole interior/ better seats, & better carpet. But I have to disagree with you on the toughness of the obs to the superduty. In my opinion the obs is much tougher on the body and the motor. The obs 7.3 is completely different than the superduty, the 7.3s after 98 had a weaker bottom end like you said, the ICM on the superduty is 24v but the ICM on the obs is 12v. I love my obs 7.3 and I wouldnt trade it for the world. On the manual fuel pump it was converted to an electric fuel pump so I just turn on the key and let it prime for about 10-20 min with the glow plug relay disconnected so you don’t fry the valve cover wiring harness don’t ask me why I know that. And most of the time here is Texas I wired in a glow plug off switch because I never need them 95% of the time. But I can tell that my trucks previous owner took very good care of it.

I think the Ford body is probably the more robust of the big three, especially back in the day. Dodge dashes, look at em hard and they fall apart! Intercooler is NOT for emissions. How many intercooler deletes do you see for sale on the internet? Intercooler is for horse power only.
    I will not explain here. Look up the Gale Banks RUclips video on the subject. Rant over.
    Thanks for the video. I test drove a 1998 Ford F250 at a dealership. It was on a "new" F150 cab with heavy duty suspension, but it said F250 on the badge. I never saw that model again. It may have been Ford's intermediate version.
    FYI
    To check for powder connecting rods there is a video on it. There is a block window plug you can pull off and look directly at them.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the input! I had no idea there was a window in the block to check for powdered metal rods. If you can find them, would you post links to the videos you're referring to? Banks has so many videos out there its hard to know which one you're referring to. Gale Banks does know what he's talking about, that guy went and became an engineer so he could understand more about the performance parts he was adding and to design them, it's a pretty cool story! It sounds like you found an odd ball f250. 1998 was a weird year for ford trucks for sure. Did the round body f250 have a powerstroke in it? I've only seen one of those trucks once and I thought it was a joke at first, that someone had just put f250 badges on an f150.
      Regarding the intercooler: They weren't put on strictly for emissions, though that is a good motivation for auto makers to utilize intercoolers. Here's a link to a study on intercooling, turbocharging, and power output: www.researchgate.net/publication/319979741_THE_EFFECT_OF_TURBOCHARGER_PRESSURE_AND_INTERCOOLER_TEMPERATURE_ON_ENGINE_PERFORMANCE
      The study appears to be mostly based on theoretical calculations, though from my experience those theoretical equations are fairly accurate. I've worked with similar models myself as an mechanical engineer. See figure 12, it indicates that as you decrease the intake air temperature (via intecooling) the thermal efficiency of the engine is increased. Efficiency may not seem to be increased by much, but gaining around 2% thermal efficiency is a huge accomplishment! This allows the engine to burn less fuel and in turn produce less emissions, especially carbon emissions if you're talking about increasing thermal efficiency. Certainly intercooling also allows you to increase the power output of an engine and lower exhaust gas temperatures, that's definitely a good reason to intercool and one of the reasons I added one to my OBS truck. Another factor is that by increasing the air charge density via intercooling, you can increase the air taken into the engine per revolution. Yes this increases power output, but it also lowers emissions, Nitrous Oxide emission (NOx) in particular. Essentially the greater mass of air ingested causes a lower peak cylinder temperature (hence lowers egts) which reduced NOx formation. NOx is generally formed as a result of higher peak combustion temperatures. Really, I don't think most folks care about emissions as much as auto makers and the government. If you 'deleted' an intercooler simply because it lowered emissions, you'd be an idiot as it helps increase power, increase efficiency, lowers egt, and the cons to an intercooler are far less than those aforementioned pros. Look, if modern particulate filters actually increased power and fuel economy, (which they do neither) there would be far less aftermarket motivation to delete them! In the end, intercoolers are utilized to lower emissions, particularly NOx emissions at high engine load, but they also allow for increased power output! In engineering you rarely get parts that both increase power and lower emissions, especially these days when emissions regulations are so strict. Even if you factor out emissions regulations, I think auto makers would still intercool vehicles to increase power output, but they also consequently reduce emissions slightly. I've gathered much of this reasoning from a good friend of mine who spend a good part of 20 years working as a noise and vibration engineer for Cummins. By the way Merry Christmas!

      I was at a Ford dealership 1998 looking to by a new truck. The 1998 F250 I test drove had the triton V8. It also had a stiff ride compared to a '99 F150 I just drove. They both looked identical except for the bagdes. I told the Ford salesman to sell me the F150. The salesman did not bring up a Diesel version of the F250 and I did not ask.

    • @norman_sage2528
      @norman_sage2528 5 лет назад

      @John Campos Good idea adding intercooler.
      With the intercooler, you are now increasing the air density entering the combustion chamber.
      Black smoke coming out the exhaust is fuel which has not combusted. If you see black smoke come out of a diesel it is running rich. Looks cool but it is just wasting fuel.

      How many miles per gallon are you getting? Towing & unloaded?
      I'd start by making sure the truck is running smoothly, any check engine lights? The truck should be pretty peppy when warmed up and decently responsive. How old are the fuel injectors?
      Injectors can wear out on 7.3's too, and while they may not make white smoke, they will cause a pretty bad sluggishness to the truck. I had a set of injectors with ~150k miles on them and the truck was definitely sluggish. Replaced with rebuild injectors and it made a huge difference!

    I want a 7.3, came from a 6.0 want something different, but I wanna make it quick for a truck (not a drag truck) but I also want the ability to work on it myself. What’s the better one for towing and going quicker (with mods ofcourse)

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  6 лет назад

      FBI, I'd say the super duty is better to make quick hands down. They're already intercooled, transmissions are stronger and they already have bigger injectors and a decently sized HPOP. The only downside is the SD is a little heavier and more cramped to work on, but it's not that bad. Some things on the OBS are hard to work on too, especially with exhaust downpipes... Also SD has a quicker spooling turbo which is much better for daily driving. The only thing is some SD trucks have powered metal connecting rods, but that doesn't matter unless you go past 400 rear wheel horsepower.

    the body style of a super duty is in fact MUCH MUCH taller then an OBS, the are about the same width, but a superduty has a much taller cab and bed inside and out, by atleast 8-10 inches taller cab, can you measure them since you have them side by side?

    Love my dad's 95 OBS dually with 4.11 rear gear, even with the small electronic issues that are starting to crop up ad 150,000 miles but I would like a 7.3L Powerstroke superduty, or maybe even a 6.0L knowing what I know now about them. Didn't know the super duty trucks had a trans temp gauge that far back. I figured that was something that started to be added about a few years ago... Also word of advice for anyone with the OBS Powerstroke: that mechanical fuel pump is a bitch to replace. And also about the fuel pump on the OBS is from what I've read on the web fuel pump on the OBS makes around 45 pounds of pressure but the injectors need 65 or so pounds of fuel pressure to perform at their max. Not sure if it's true or not but something to think about.

      Do it! A zf5 will last way longer with less maintenance. The E4od in my 7.3 was rebuilt 8 years ago and it's already showing signs of wear such as it has a hard time deciding what gear it wants under throttle. Pisses me off Everytime I need to get going especially while towing trailers. At least in a manual you can choose your gears makes it to where my other 91 460 zf5 can out pull my 97 e4od 7.3 kinda sad when you think about the fact a truck 6 years older and being a gas can out pull and perform the diesel

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  3 года назад +1

      If you run through the typical checks for blowby, it shifts fine, starts cold, and feels like it makes good power, then I'd go for it. If you find any starting fluid near the truck, I may be a bit leery, and would definitely ask if it was used. Starting fluid can be very bad for the engine. My truck just rolled over 400k miles and runs great. It leaks some oil, but with fresh injectors it makes plenty of power. Are you willing to do some work on the truck like replace glow plugs, or are you looking at it to be a good to go oil change only truck?

    • @Rnddiesel

      @@1_2_Many_Projects Then I'd definitely go for it. As long as the engine bottom end is all good, and the transmission is good, you can replace injectors and whatnot if needed. Even with worn out parts they'll just work. These Powerstrokes are legends for a reason. I'd definitely keep a spare camshaft position sensor on hand though. That's one thing that'll for sure stop a 7.3 in its tracks.

    Kid just said it at 15:38 . The OBS is best for pulling. It all comes down to gearing and a 4.10 ratio will pull your house off it's foundation. My 91 460 zf5 has the same gearing and it out pulls my other 97 7.3 auto plus in the long run the OBS will be worth way more of kept up just because of the body style

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  5 лет назад

      It's hard to say. The SD in the video is 2x4, my OBS is a 4x4 and 1 ton rather than a 3/4 ton. The OBS definitely gives a rough ride, though I think pretty much any 1 ton truck will do that. The SD was a little softer, though that was probably from it only being a 3/4 ton. It wasn't a huge world of difference, but definitely a little softer.
