  • The carburettor lived a long life, but recently it's been holding onto a thing piece of string... And that's all going to be over in 2024. With the likes of Sherco and Beta having to switch to fuel injection, the last brand new motorcycles featuring carburettors are going to disappear form the showroom floors. But, why exactly is this? How come they lived for so long? And what should we expect going onwards?

Yea TPI was the future! OMG so much better! Until everyone realized it wasn't and now its a thing of the past, because it didn't perform. TBI is significantly better than TPI, but honestly doesn't feel any better than a well jetted carb. Unless you're lazy.

Because Beta and Sherco are smart . To many problems with TPI . I’d stick with a good old carburator that never gives problems

i wonder what's going to happen to the 50cc am6 platform enduro bikes that fantic, sherco and beta offer as they have always had carbs even my 22 model has one. do you think they will discontinue them or switch to tpi/tbi?

    • @KRANKiT
      @KRANKiT  Год назад

My guess is that they’ll all switch to something like TBI. But it’s just a guess, we’ll have to wait and see :)

As a motorcycle design engineer with a over a decade in the motorcycel industry, I will always chose fuel injection over carbs.

Not going to lie evert vehicle me and my friends own have carbs and it's like having a toxic boyfriend.
    1. when they are dialed in its AMAZING
    2. They run right sometimes, take time to setup but then only work proper for a few weeks.
    3. In my country the weather can be 8 degrees in the morning and 24 degrees at lunch with no air humidity and 2 degrees again in the evening with strong wind/rain.
Aka you can never get it to run right it's annoYING AF :P but i get it for hobbyist and racing a carb is nice and to repair it too. And if i would ride to china from Europe I would definitely go on a bike with carbs. Because you can fix it but for every day life EFI all the way :)

Me still rocking an all carb fleet: thats cute...
PS. all the bikes share one make of carbs so parts interchangability is 100% .
    hah.
add in all the efi parts that WILL die in the humidity and heat (already happpening at the shop i frequent)
    -electronic sensors
    -motor driven fuel pump
    -transisiterized throttle body
    -O2 sensors
    -fuel nozzle
    -hi pressure hoses
-faster dead batteries (everything wants the electricity) typically9months to 1.5 yrs vs 2yrs plus for carb models
*burned valves because of too hi afi ratios (hello engine rebuild...)
-ecu ( which they bundle the rectifier and starter system with...)
, i get to keep my dollars...
EFI is pound AND penny foolish in the long run. I have at least 100 data points.
Im from ghost island and EFI has been mandated 6 years ago. shit has happened and i have stayed .out.of .it.

That's the 2024 model year, which is actually released in 2023. My guess is that they managed to squeeze the launch before the regulations start applying.

Well, the KTM group have all been fuel injected for some time now ... that includes Husky and GasGas. Sherco and Beta are still carbed at the moment.

there is another reason why 2 strokes are fine with carbs, atomization. if you have seen carbs work in slow motion then you know they dont atomize fuel perfectly, especially at lower rpms and lower power outputs, at lower rpms and lower power outputs they kinda shoot droplets of fuel into the cylinder which makes for bad power and bad emissions. 2 strokes dont make good power at the low rpms so that doesnt matter and most of all 2 strokes inhale the fuel droplets into the crankcase before it goes into the cylinder which effectivly counteracts the fact that its getting droplets of fuel instead of a mist of fuel. you can feed the engine a litterall stream of fuel and the crankcase will make sure that it is atomized decently before entering the cylinder. 2 strokes dont have much of a difference if thye are fed a fine mist from an injector or a droplet from a carb. two stroke fuel injection has some serious benefits though, sure computerization os more complex but look at 4 strokes, they make more power just as reliably now as the old carbs just after a decade and a bit of innovation. the biggest benefit that 2t fuel injection gives is perfect fuel/air ratio at any time and adaptability over different ocnditions. the perfect air fuel ratio is the best though cuz carbs arent perfect and on two strokes especially they would lean and rich out at different rpms, look at any carbureted 2 strokes power curv, there are weird dips and stuff in it, look at the 2024 tbi from ktm, its a straight edge with just as much throttle response as a carb. i think injection on two strokes is a good thing and with the new tbi ktm has proved that it can feel even smoother than a carb with all the other benefits.

You never eluded to why fuel injection is going to be better with facts. Carbs are only going away due to emission laws.
