- President Joe Biden has put a halt on the issuing of new LNG export permits. The White House says it will help limit costs to American households and protect the environment. But there is concern in Europe countries that it'll threaten their energy security. They've become increasingly reliant on US LNG since ending imports of Russian pipeline gas. We discuss if they are right to be concerned with Olga Khakova from the Global Energy Center in Washington.

This whole scenario including the blast of the North Stream pipeline was to get leverage over the EU. Beside getting rich of course.
Again, who did North Stream ? And don't come with the lame excuse Ukraine. They never had the capabilities to do this. More than a ton TNT was used at at least two locations. In water depths of around 80m. Death zone for divers only doable with professional gear and training.

The current level of imports and medium term future expansion plans are not affected. Europe and especially Germany is super talented at not being able to innovate and find something new (nuclear power etc).

(The oil&Gas sector not being as influencial with this admin.) The tax take is obviously lower if not exporting given lower prices - ie no benefit for tax, no benefit to Environment (one of the supposed reasons) so main benefit, increased domestic consumption and (MAINLY) benefit to Chem industry.

The chart is about LNG gas, half of German gas import come now from Norway through pipes.
Why Russian Gas is dirtier? You speak about it as a fact, but it is not true.
It is a pipeline gas which is significantly clearer than any LNG - not required to be liquefied, rectified and significantly lower transportation CO2 impact.

I was under the impression that Norway was providing natural gas in gaseous form, so even though the LNG supply is being delayed, Germany still has some room to maneuver, hasn’t it?

This situation is quite comparable to why Canada doesn't refine its own gasoline. A wee tax we pay for being a friend and neighbor. It's so awesome living unnecessarily as a hostage.
The reason we don't refine our own gasoline for self sufficiency is because the entirety of Canada uses the same amount of fuel as Texas alone. There isn't any money in refining our own fuel because Canada doesn't use a drop compared to the USA. And American producers can make it cheaper with cheaper US labour, so they would never end up buying any surplus from us, so we would either have refineries that are operating under capacity always as a matter of need, or we would have too little and still need to import.
So we import most of it.. It's just ecenomics.

One thing I constantly see fellow Canadians not recognizing is that the USA is one of the most populated countries on earth. Many times we don't do some things because they just do it cheaper in America, they have more ecenomic mass to keep production scale higher and keep overheads lower.

@@jetli740 What a bold lie. Russia exported 33 bcm of natural to Asia in 2021. That's only a tiny fraction compared to the 160-200 bcm it exported to Europe. With existing infrastructure, a maximum export of 80 bcm to Asia is theoretically possible but, at the moment, not realized and also relatively unlikely, looking at the slow progress Russia makes with new supply agreements (looking at you, Uzbekistan). Do they not teach you to fact-check in Moscow, comrade?

Most of the US LNG deliveries to the EU is fracked gas which is the dirtiest energy source after coal. But Biden just tries to hurt Texas because of the border dispute and in the hope to win elections. The argument not to buy Russian gas lost it's purpose, Putin has no problem continuing war production, he is outproducing the West. So, why bother with US LNG? It is more polluting and way more expensive. May I remind that it was EU leaders who canceled affordable long term Russian gas contracts in favor of short term gas contracts, months before Putin started to limit gas deliveries to the EU. EU weaponized our energy. EU leaders took the decision to deny their citizens and industries affordable energy, hence the rise of extreme right.

They wanted to pay Russia with a currency (dollar) that they know Russia couldn't use due to all the sanctions from the West and being cut from the SWIFT system, basically, they thought they could get Russian gas for 0$ until Russia learns her lessons and come back crawling on her knees and begging for the almighty West to forgive her and accept her back in, but their hubris blinded them, they've always seen Russians as lesser people than them, that explains their constant hatred of Russia, their inability to believe that the Russian government had a plan based on long term strategic thinking. All homes and buildings in the colder north should focus on high insulation, renewables + grid batteries and wood heat. With 3" of foam walls we heated our old house with a small wood stove when -36C last week.
I have a wooden house in Ukraine. Wood is a super insulated product. Foam is the icing on the cake . I am actually covering my wooden house with metal cladding and wool fabric

New U.S. permits are on pause, but no one is talking about revoking existing export permits, or stopping new LNG export projects that have been permitted and are currently being built-out. Also, U.S. fossil fuel companies have tremendous political power in the U.S., and there's just no way that American LNG exports will dry up. In the words of Taylor Swift, "you need to calm down!"

Yes but as they told winter was very mild and in a harsh winter EU needs much more capacity, and constructions will delay 1 year.
@@kashmirha European storage was filled very quickly even while some US export terminals were down. More export terminals are being built, so there should be no problem at all. And the pause has an explicit exemption to allow additional permits should an emergency situation occur. The pause is all about updating the permitting regulations for future projects, regulations that were last updated during the Trump administration - which likely meant the permits were exceptionally industry friendly with little protections for everyone else. The industry has shown that it is happy to pollute, including near where people live, as without regulation it will take whatever actions maximize profits. We see that with the earthquakes in Oklahoma - not their problem. And they are happy to quickly close their companies once their profits are secured so that they can avoid cleanup expenses.
Sitting here in my home in South America where we have renewable charcoal energy thanks to Iron-bark Eucalyptus being reintroduced. Acts as a carbon sink and takes 1/4 the time to mature to a size to make charcoal then Northern Hemisphere Hardwoods. Its not coal but can be used the same way...

Most of the US LNG deliveries to the EU is fracked gas which is the dirtiest energy source after coal. But Biden just tries to hurt Texas because of the border dispute and in the hope to win elections. The argument not to buy Russian gas lost it's purpose, Putin has no problem continuing war production, he is outproducing the West. So, why bother with US LNG? It is more polluting and way more expensive. May I remind that it was EU leaders who canceled affordable long term Russian gas contracts in favor of short term gas contracts, months before Putin started to limit gas deliveries to the EU. EU weaponized our energy. EU leaders took the decision to deny their citizens and industries affordable energy, hence the rise of extreme right.

The Nord Stream pipelines were already effectively scrap metal before the Russians blew them up. First Putin tried, and failed, energy blackmail against Europe. Now we don't need Russian fossil gas, and never will, as we are transitioning away from fossil fuels. And we are even oversupplied with LNG as this pause is not for terminals already under construction.

Right now Ontario just made a decision on rebuilding Pickering (which was going to be replaced with gas plants).
All because of Fukushima. Even Japan has restarted and is building nuke plants. China is building 30 plants. South Korea built a number recently (at $2200 per kwh).
Exactly! Germany has gotten cheap gas from Russia for decades, then used that to close all their nuclear, and invest trillions into low productivity solar in a climate that isn't conducive of it.
I have a German friend who said "there's a strong antinuclear culture in Germany, so it's not an option". I said 'true, but what's easier to change: thermodynamics or culture?'
Until Germany starts considering its geography and energy prices and follows France's example for standardized, affordable nuclear, it will be in continual energy dependence and crisis. I wish solar and wind could fill that gap, but it just can't in such a densely populated, industrialized, low coast, low-sun country.
Every other country needs to do this same math as well; nuclear is needed everywhere for low emission energy, but it's most acute in Germany.

Australia has always been the world’s most reliable and cost effective supplier of LNG. Why is it that Germany prefers to pay much higher spot prices for Australian LNG than contracting with it for cheaper and consistent supplies?

France is fine???? The EDF was on the brink of bankruptcy and had to be nationalized. 30(!!!) of their 56 nuclear power plants were shut down for ALL of 2022 and France had to import MASSIVE amounts of electricity from - wait for it! - Germany!
Germany has been a net export country of electricity for over 20 years, from 2002 to 2022. Only recently we had to import marginal amounts, which is completely fine, as others do it all the time. And we build 4-5 wind turbines a day, every day, and 30 football fields of solar panels every day, so soon we'll export again.

@@TrendyStone No, until we shut down our nuclear power plants. Now we are more or less self-sufficient with minimal imports from time to time. As far as I know, oil has never been used to generate electricity in Germany. Natural gas is only used to generate electricity at times of peak demand. We have never had a problem with electricity. Our problem was that gas is used extensively for heating in private households. Nuclear power plants are useless for heating homes with gas heating, aren't they?
Now households are switching more and more to heat pumps, whose electricity comes from more and more community-owned wind turbines and their own rooftop solar panels. We don't need monopolistic companies taking money out of our pockets to give to their shareholders. And we don't need a nationalized EDF that hides its debts and revenue losses behind tax subsidies instead of putting the true cost of electricity on the monthly bill.

Russian gas used to cover 40% of EU gas consumption; not 40% of EU energy mix.
For those who don't know; LNG is a "waste product" in the American energy industry. Selling it, especially to Europe, was never an early consideration for the enormous US energy market. Right now, given the worldwide interest, the American energy chiefs are considering how to market and monetize the American LNG market to a more normal produced market product. A huge energy and food crises is coming worldwide. Consider preparing.
Justin Trudeau of Canada showed Scholz of Germany the huge undeveloped Canadian gas field in NE Canada. The Europeans led by Germany should make a deal to develop those fields for future secure supplies. Norwegian gas is not enough, and the African supplies cannot be considered too secure.
The world is changing. Globalization is collapsing. Note to the wise, time for some forward planning.

The Germans are particularly dim in refusing to engage with Australia for LNG as it is again the world’s largest exporter and has always been the most reliable.

There are many other suppliers, since it is a global market, prices will increase for everyone.

I said it before i say it again, as soon as the Ukrain war is over we should rebuild the gas pipelines. The US sure would not mind some fair competition due to the free market system, right? What we then but shouldn't do is "only" or even "mostly" getting gas just from one single source.
But make sure if Russia will still deliver to Europe. They will do it only if you pay upfront. Which Europe never agree. Already in talks for this. But te Russian they did not rush to move anything now. Not yet. Russians work hard for transfers and link to Asia. China link to vietnam last week. This is happening when EU has not completely stopped using Russia oil, which is now getting backdoor entry through India.
Remember that this isn't a sudden cut off all gas exports, it's just slowing the expansion of LNG exports, which already are the most ever for any country. It won't be felt for decades.
Germany asked for it. Against its own national interest, ditched a cheap and reliable energy source from Russia and go for a more expensive source from USA.
