I had the main belt shaft bearing go on mine. Changed the 2 bearing, 6001 and 6002. They are cheap bearing from manufacturer and that is why it does not last. I put in new SKF bearings.
The part that you were saying did not turn when you rotated might of been ok. Beside your bearing that was damage was a flat plate (between the bearings) and when you pull on the levers connected on the plate it rotates and separate the bearing, when you do and rotate the shaft the 2 wheel gears rotate, it is a clutch.. I am positive if you would of changed the bearings you could save the transmission.
In a shop, this is not feasible because of labor costs, but if you do it yourself only bearing cost, silicon sealant and gear oil.
I did mine.

Did you have to loosen all 3 axles? everything is kind of loose but still noting will come out and whit plastic pieces everywhere the risk of breaking more is big.

• @efilnikufecin2004
@efilnikufecin2004 9 лет назад +3

+Gabriele Olivieri Tis a snowblower, used on a cold day, and the trans wouldn't produce much heat anyway. Besides, the Metal bearing failed because it had a load on it's side which it is not designed for. I think the nylon gears would have gave 10 years of service, but that bearing was designed to fail fast I am almost certain.

• @Kevinthomaswatson
@Kevinthomaswatson 9 лет назад +2

+efilnikufecin2004 These are probably thrust bearings which are designed for a side load, but as you state, a bearing in a proper oil bath should remain well below the temperature needed to cause damage.
The single biggest issue for me is the companies that produce these transmissions have no provision in place to sell these parts.
They may order 5000 gears at a time but won't sell them to the consumer so if one gear fails you can't fix it even though the part is readily available.

A transmission at all in a snowblower is the problem, it isn’t necessary in my opinion, I like the simple ones that just have the drive disk and friction wheel, when the rubber wears out you just replace the wheel, no gears and extra crap that can break.

• @justaviewerortwo2924

• @RichardFallstich
@RichardFallstich 9 лет назад +9

Regardless of what material is used for the gears; plastic, aluminum, steel, brass, etc. it seems needlessly complex for a snowblower transmission. The old friction plate/disc drives are simpler and more reliable. I have a a 25 year old Ariens that runs like new. The only maintenance it required was a carb rebuild and periodic lubrication.

It looks similar to the one I'm working on now except the gears are metal on the one I have.
The bearing and bushing get jammed into the worm wheel with the metal lever and friction causes it to lock the shaft which operates the transmission.
There didn't seem to be much oil in that one which could have caused the bearing failure.
It took me three days to locate the manufacturer of the bronze worm wheel on the transmission I have but it's easily repairable if they sell me the part.
I can't tell from here but I'm guessing replacing that bearing on your transmission will get it working again.

at 3:17 the plastic gear right above your fingers is connected to the input shaft but is not driving the shaft it is on. Likely related to the misalignment of the shift fork which is caused by the bearing failure.. At 3:49 the gear you will point at has nothing wrong, it is not engaged. As for the failed bearing, it failed because it has a load on it in a way that bearings of that type are not meant to handle (pressing on the side of the bearing. This will be the common failure point of these transmissions. If you were to contact any bearing supplier and show them that, they will agree. I would not pay $400 for a replacement transmission, I would replace the snowblower because this will happen again unless they change the design. This is an obvious defect in workmanship, and likely an intended flaw (planned obsolescence).

not trying to say that i'd rather have plastic gears rather then metal cause obviously metal is far superior however i have one of these units and have had one for around 4 years now and all the plastic parts are just fine.. only issue's i've had are vibration related.. gotta keep on top of torquing all the screws/bolts regularly however that being said the flywheel that moves to change your speed has given me problems to the extent of having to lube it up with some good quality grease cause it has a tendency to stick in gear i'm assuming because the flywheel just sticks and your left with your rig only being able use 1st gear. For a guy that has a super long driveway that is annoying..
Love the video though i was tempted to take the transmission apart and now i'm glad i didn't heh.

My friction wheel drive lasted 12 years with simple maintenance, 100$ 2 belts and friction wheel, good to go for another 12 years. Suprised to see plastic junk like this in a snowblower.

What a peace of junk! Plastic, plastic and more plastic and what fails a steel bearing :) Great video I am also interested in "new" design of parts like this what is inside and how is made.

I would think NOT to purchase a Snow-Blower that has this transmission, instead to get a snow-blower with manual mechanical rubber friction wheel for shifting. What was that brand snow-blower with the particular transmission that cost over $400? Let us know please.

Those are bearings designed to work like a sprag clutch. They drive in one direction only.

I love it when someone says I've never worked on one if these before , and the guy looks at you like hes horrified.
Come on, techs can go back to"basic training 101" theory and use that.
You did pay attention in tech school right?
When something doesn't have a manual, you gotta go back to theory for your diagnosis.
My other favorite is to say "let's see what happens " 😂😂
That makes eyes go big too!!

• @donyboy73
@donyboy73  9 лет назад +2

+MrTheHillfolk the manufacturers don't want us guys working on these, not even a parts list available, parts not available either

• @MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 9 лет назад

+donyboy73
Of course not.
That is what makes it fun to take apart mystery boxes that any service performed on, is shunned by the manufacturer 😂
It's kind of sad everything is going toward an assembly with no parts available.

Great informative video on exactly the same transmission l,m having a problem with. Who designes these machines ?.lts very frustrating trying to access any cables etc.We just had 0ver a metre of snow and my machine,s tranny went just as l was finishing up.they should stick with the old friction wheel Keep it simple stupid.Thank for the great videos.

• @СервисныйцентрСадоваяТехника

We also did such a defect. Only it makes no sense to do it. There are no spare parts for this transmission. Sell and install new ones.

that's a shame, what happened to the old school transmissions which where aluminum or steel, they must not have used high quality bearings, that's the quality of MTD & Murray

• @superdave3201
@superdave3201 4 года назад

Gee? I watched one of your other videos saying when buying used to stay away from the plastic transmissions. I see why. $$$

If you buy a snow thrower with an MTD transmission who's vision is delivering the best consumer experience then this is what you can expect when it breaks .
this part never been available for the aftermarket.
Unfortunately only the complete transmission is available.
Stick with a friction wheel!

I buy used snowblowers quite often, which snowblower did this transmission come out of.
I would like to know, so I won't buy it in the future thanks.

+-Doug - Briggs and Stratton now owns Murray, but Murray has been at the lower end of equipment. Craftsman no longer uses AYP, the lawnmower decks for instance are made in China now and have plastic parts. MTD used to make quality products as well. Now there products are also low quality.

I had a Sears snow blower in 2013 with this transmission and it only lasted three months before it broke. Sears Just kept replacing the transmission till it was out of warranty. Had to junk it and buy a different brand of snow blower. Never buy another Sears snow blower.

The bearing was running in oil too, must have been faulty. Did you try to substitute a bearing from something else? I once had 2 needle bearings go in the transmission of an MTD and the parts supply store said I had to buy the whole thing..... over $200. My buddy down at the auto parts store had a bearing out of the transmission of a dodge car that fit perfectly for $16. That bearing of yours looked like a common bearing........ just an idea.

Thanks Donny for showing us all what the bad China parts are, now I did buy a knockoff Honda for my wood splitter and 3 years of hard use still all good! Good and bad of china. If a motor is made in the good old USA I would pay a little extra for it. But that’s becoming far and few between unfortunately!!

That or a no name Chinese bearing was out of spec and mexican line didn't catch it. A Timken made in a first world country probably would have held.
