At 73 yrs old, I just spent 12 hrs on my knees, in the driveway, on Ground hog day, replacing the main drive bronze bushing, in my 2003 Arians 8.5/24. Yea I went through about 3 pairs of rubber gloves, had to use the torch on the pulley. and removed every part from the drive system and replaced the rubber drive wheel while at it. I couldn't find a video on this repair so I had to figure the whole thing out my self. You can't do this stuff in the nursing home. Your videos are always great. I wish you had done one on that bronze bushing. It might have saved me a few hrs.
Robert, nice job that shows you keep going, keep learning, keep succeeding. Just 1 thing, don't take on a big challenge like this on ground hog day - better to lay low so you don't get caught in a repetitious cycle!
What is really excellent about this video is that the process isn't easy-peasy like so many DIY videos which make the poor viewer think he can effortlessly fix the problem. Donyboy shows how to get around obstacles and gives hacks as to how best do the repair. Very nicely done.
I’ve watched dozens and dozens of repair videos for cars, bikes and power equipment, but this video was so well thought out, executed and explained, I’m flabbergasted!!! You sir, are an excellent instructor!
Excellent repair Don. Apparently, 127 people who gave this a thumbs down have no idea what proper repairs look like. Painted and everything, ready to go! 👍🏻
I have to fully agree with others comments. Your information is detailed......never assuming the viewer knows a supposed obvious step.....and i'm a big fan of getting close into the part you are working on......as opposed to some you tubers who put the camera 10 feet ftom the small part they are working on!!! Verbal and video detail is extremely important for instructional video.....which you do superbly!! Keep it up!!
I am STUNNED by the level of detail and teaching you are giving for this job. I am at 10:30 and you are giving pointers about the shear pin and I just have to say that my fears that this next generation not being able to fix their stuff are completely gone, all they will need to do is find one of your videos and they will be just fine! I had to learn things the hard way, what a gift it is to have your knowledge and experience available to everyone! Keep up the good work.
This is the best how-to video I have ever seen on any subject. There are many excellent videos on various topics but most are amateurish and fair to poor quality overall. Very clear video of excellent quality but just as importantly every view provides good context of what you are doing, i.e., not too close and not too far away. Very clear audio and excellent description of every step. No repetition and no stumbling around, no extraneous information and no information left out - very well thought out.
I have a Bolens 824 with a bad gearbox that's been sitting in my shed for more than a few years. At the time it failed the price on a new gearbox was quite high so I purchased a new Ariens to replace it. Always loved the snowblower and it gave me about thirty years of good service. I may price out the gears and bushings and fix that beast after watching this very well documented repair video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Revisiting some of your old videos and then watching this most recent video, this channel just keeps getting better and better. Keep up the great informative videos, I always pick up a pointer or two.
Excellent work, in fact one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched! I appreciate your non-use of music and your highly descriptive procedures!
Well-organized project. I really like the voice-over approach. Clear and concise instructions chock full of tips that demonstrate that you have done this before and that this channel is not one of the "Instant experience" ones. I enjoyed it so much, I didn't just like and subscribe, I saved it to my "Important DIY" playlist. Thank you very much for posting.
Having to do this myself this season. I hope the community understands how difficult it is filming this while repairing and running a shop! Impressive Don! Thank you for the help.
Did this job a few years ago. Also replaced my friction disc. All from using your videos as a guide. Thanks for providing these videos! They are much appreciated!
Clean everything before you take it apart. After it is apart, clean everything again. Reassemble, replacing defective parts and then clean it all again. It saves time and it prevents mistakes.
I've done this repair a couple times. Some Kroil on that shaft will help it come out. Kroil on the bearing also helps far better than penetrating oil. I use 1/4 inch x 2 1/2 inch CARRIAGE BOLTS and RED WIRE NUTS for the shear pins. They can be quickly changed out in the snow with gloves on. I used a sanding sponge to clean the crud off the auger shaft before sliding the case off. I have never had to pound so hard. SearsPartsDirect sold me the parts. The phone agents can often discount the parts to better than the discount parts distributors. Murray/Craftsman specs a cold weather Lubriplate for the gear box with a brass worm gear. I made a blade adapter so I can convert the snow blower to a snow plow by removing the blower housing. It works great for sidewalk maintenance when the city requires sidewalks to stay clean even when there is not enough snow to blow it.
Outstanding video! I scrap metal and I was given a Craftsman snow thrower in beautful condition, but the auger wouldn't turn. When I heard that the operator hit a frozen newspaper, I knew exactly what was wrong, but needed help in taking this beast apart. Your video is excellent. I have ordered the replacement gear and expect to succeed in saving this fine piece of equipment. Many kudos to you, sir!
I can't stress how perfect that video was. This comes from a professional technical instructor. If youtube was a fraction of the quality of this video, we'd be in a much better place. Thank you sir.
I finally got my machine's auger housing parts disassembled today. I used your puller technique to get the auger pulley off the shaft. Mine wasn't rusted in place but the impeller shaft was slightly bent and even twisted as you could see by the keyway not being straight. As a result everything fought me even the collar that goes on the shaft between the pulley and the bearing. I had to use pullers to remove the collar and the bearing as well. Even the bolts which held the gearbox case together were so tight I had trouble breaking them loose. I will follow this video and the schematics to put everything back together once I get a good impeller assembly. The gears and bushings in my gearbox were okay (surprisingly enough they slid off the shafts without any tools) but I think someone put a lithium grease in it. I will wash it all out and replace it with the 00 grease. I ordered the Stens 00 grease along with a new housing gasket and some anti-seize lubricant and a replacement skid shoe from Amazon. One skid was worn through but the other was still good. Thanks again for this video this will be my guide for putting everything back together so that it works like new.
I have finally got my machine working correctly. In addition to replacing the impeller assembly and the auger housing ball bearing I had to replace the auger impeller brake pad P/N 581540ma. The old one was worn to about half its original width at the bottom probably due to the pulley wobbling on the bent shaft and could not do its job of stopping the auger quickly. I also replaced both the drive and auger belts with new ones. This was a lot of work but will hopefully be worth it the first time we get a big snowstorm. I think a local power equipment shop worked on this machine and probably tried to get the pulley off by hammering on the shaft and bent it. They obviously didn't watch this video.
Thanks for the break down - really helped me rebuild my gear box! Unfortunately, when I took mine apart everything seemed fine and the gear was only mildly worn. Even though the belt appeared mostly fine, I decided to replace it anyways. When I got the new 33" belt and compared to the old one, the old one appeared to possibly be a 34". The good thing is when I put it all back together everything worked as expected.
This man is a great teacher. There's a thing called 'it" and it applies to whatever it is that we are trying to convey in life when it comes to repairing small engines he has "it". I watch all his videos. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
I replaced my broken shear pins with stainless steel bolts thinking "Well, that shouldn't happen again". I was right. I completely mangled the gear box instead. After watching this video I ordered a complete set of parts the week before the snow came in October 2019 and they arrived April 2020, the week after the snow melted! I am going to start putting my baby back together tomorrow. I am so happy to have found this video, it has made me confident to tackle the repair and save myself 100's of dollars. And it looks fun too.
I wanted too say thank you for all your videos on small engine, mowers and snow blower repair. The way you film and present the videos is very easy to understand and I personally really enjoy them.
Thank you. Very practical and down to earth repair video. My first snow thrower was a Craftsman branded unit. I did learn something I wasn’t aware of previously and that relates to overtightening of the shear bolts. I have a Honda snow thrower now and the auger shear bolts in that are tightened fully. I’ll say one thing about the Craftsman unit, everything was fixable and it was not overly complex. I got twelve years from mine when I declined to invest in a new auger housing - rusted, the engine was still running fine. Just a couple of final things... One relates to wrench sizes and bolt sizes. In the SAE world, a 1/2” wrench fits a 5/16” bolt, so the bolt (3:30) is not 1/2” If a 1/2" wrench fits it. Additionally, clevis pins are not hair clips (1:55). I am not meaning to be critical, just thought you would want to know.
Dude, I’m gonna say what it seems like so many other people already have, great video very well done step-by-step. I love that you showed that there will be small every day problems, and how to work through them.
I was just about to reassemble the auger gearbox on my snowblower. I have more enthusiasm than I have experience. Your video was just what I needed to increase the probability that it will work when I am done. Thanks!
After seeing ALL that, I will replace my common auger drive bolts with proper shear pins. You can oil the base of the chute from the inside of it for easier turning. Mine is converted to 12V operation of the chute with DPDT switch. Excellent Video Dony. That is a nice wide (30") machine with 11.5 HP. $2100 plus today.
very good video, i like especially you do all the repair in one long video, always right to the point , and no short cuts, just like new LESSON FROM THIS VIDEO, ALWAYS USE CORRECT SHEARBOLT, MUCH CHEAPER THAN A NEW GEARBOX
This video is 5 stars excellent. It’s amazing that we have RUclips to diagnose very obscure problems in our life and even more amazing that people like you make videos to this level of quality. I never comment like or subscribe but I did all 3 for you because you deserve it.
I'm so glad I found your channel here in You tube. Your videos are very helpful. You are very good explaining and pay attention to details that makes it easy for us,thank you.
I noticed that when you took the unit apart, the bushing on each end of the auger shaft were on backwards. When you reassembled the auger, you put the bushings in the correct way! Thanks for another great video Donyboy!
Really good video. On my Husqvarna snowblower the auger shafts are short and the augers run on bearings instead of bushings and the impeller fit over the shaft with its own shear pins. I had to rebuild mine because I bent the shaft when the impeller caught a small log after I replaced the broken impeller shear pins with regular bolts. Rebuilding a transmission took me a really long time, I just wish I'd covered everything with anti-seize grease during assembly m learned for next time.
pollishing the shafts before pulling off the cases might help preserving the seals in the case halves . great vid , i halve to fo this with my 10.5 by 29 canadian tire blower .
great older video that popped up in my suggested viewing....love it...great job Don....just like i try to do....grease EVERYTHING....always assume you may have to work on it in the future
Woo ooh! Great video came apart fine & then found a tiny branch had jammed the auger over causing it to scrap the housing & burned the belt . Shear pins did not fail as the obstruction was housing to second stage auger
I'm 65 and still never seen snow, presently about 38C here in Brisbane, Australia but your informative, well put together video's never cease to amaze, simply brilliant
@@donyboy73 I can't even begin to get my head around that, our winter here is about 10 C maybe a shade lower but nothing compares to what you guys get, WOW
@@donyboy73 We are presently having the worst summer here on record, records are being smashed here daily for all the worst reasons, biggest bushfires known down south in Tasmania, massive flooding in North Queensland and everything in between is in a massive slow roast over 40C and more records smashed for consecutive days of it
Hey Don I'm new to your channel and new to the whole utube experience. I really enjoyed the video it was very informative and shows you a step by step procedure on how to dismantle, repair and reassemble. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us I truly appreciate it.
When you started talking about the shear pins I had the smile. A few years back someone had a snow blower on craigslist that was practically brand new and the only problem was the blades would not spin. When I saw the ad I was prepared to fix the drive or just pulled the motor. When I got to his house he had it out front and was showing me. He was a fairly younger person in in his late 30 s I would guess. When I bet down and seeing it was the shear pin I asked him that if the blades were to turn again would you keep this or still sell it. He said he would keep it. Then I asked him for a Phillips head screwdriver I pushed out the remaining shear pin and under the cover in front of the motor was 2 brand new sheer pins. I replace the one that was broken started the machine and sure enough everything worked. Now he tells me he feels guilty for having me come out to his house. I told him it was only a 10-minute ride and I don't mind helping someone. He did not even bother to read the manual after buying it. All my friends laughed at me and said that 5 minutes after I was gone he up the price on craigslist and made more money lol. now I don't know if he would have done it later but I never saw it online again. In my neighborhood I have a good reputation with all my neighbors. During the summer months I'm always fixing someone's lawn mower or do we wacker and come winter snow blowers. It's very seldom I charge anyone. I'm retired at a fairly early age. It gives me something to do and my garage is more like a man cave than a garage. I have a big flat screen on the wall surround sound. I enjoy watching other people work on equipment. I learn things from different people like yourself on stuff that I'm not familiar with. I enjoy your videos and I hope you and your family have a great New year.
nice video, customers in general don’t realize how much work is involved in a job like this. think it’s proper to give them an according bill for all the labour involved. maybe next time they think twice about replacing those sheer pins with regular bolts.
I know it’s a lot of work but on those cheap machines you can just split the gear box, take out the sheer pins and the cheap tins give you plenty of room to weasel it off the driveshaft. I had the same machine and it took about half an hour start to finish. Was still running when I gave it away 5 years later.
Perfect video for doing this repair! Thank you. You clearly show every aspect of what needs to be done. I have a similar green 2003 Craftsman 9HP 29" and the parts look identical. *Note: mine failed because it came with a bolt installed on one side (from the factory) that is completely different from the spare & replacement shear pins. Watching your video a 2nd time now to prepare for doing this job.
Great video, I like the anti seize on the auger drive shaft when putting it through the housing. However, the only thing I would change is to wipe off the anti seize on the threads, and replace it with locktight before installing the nut. I've personally had one of these nuts come off in the middle of use before, and its not a pleasant experience. Forced me to learn a lot more about my snow blower after the fact.
I hope your New Year is the best, like your channel. :) I have an old Craftsman AMF (thick metal tank) that had an 8hp tecumseh, now has a 6.5 Briggs that I have started in a few years (need to do this spring). Thanks for this video that will help me finish the seized augers on my MTD Snowflite 522 that I started a few years ago, but got stuck at removing the gear box shaft bearing (6:14) thanks Don. I can't find anyone that's done a video on removing the belt pulley from a tecumseh HSSK-50. I can't hold the drive shaft and I don't know if the bolt is a reverse thread, making it twice as hard to guess what I'm trying to get that pulley off the engine. I can get a small pipe wrench on the shaft (luckily) and I think I've moved the bolt a smidge, still don't know if that smidge was the tighty or loosey and the pipe wrench is hard to tell if it's holding or letting the shaft move while I'm wrenching. Have you already done a video on taking the old pulley off to put on a new engine?
I found my vice grips this afternoon and got the bolt off and found a blob of loctite on the threads. I think I just needed a second pair of eyes and a good vicegrip. Your town is way up north of Toronto and I thought Barie was up there. Love the snow in the ASMR video, reminds me of my abominable snowblower man days when I get covered with snow and can't see with my glasses covered after blowing the driveway.
This instruction was so good, you have actually convinced me not to take on this project. I do not nearly have the right tools for the job. But you did a wonderful job.
Glad I watched this to decide that I will not be doing this repair on my newly broke 24” craftsmen with the same issue. I’ve just got standard tools and skills which normally go pretty far but not this far. Maybe if I could buy the gears already installed on the bars?…and didn’t have issues pulling the auger out.
Well done Don, i had the green 11/30 for about 15 yrs, still in nice shape, no rust always sprayed WD40 all over it, wanted an upgrade so sold it to my sister and bought the same one black, love them, i will be watching your videos
Good well produced video. You covered all the information I needed to repair my Murray Pro Series 27" / 8hp snow blower. Good to see a video that is very comprehensive, well lit and obviously created by someone who knows what he is doing, and doing it right. Many Thanks. 😃
Ok it seems that aside from the motor blowing up that would be the worst thing that could happen..dont have enough tools to do the job but thanks for the video. I did do the straps and carburator rebuilt thanks to your videos .Thanks.!
I had this happen on my Craftsman Snow Blower, before I put it back together I drilled and tapped the housing for a grease fitting. Before each use I pump grease until I see it come out of the housing, it will never run dry again.
I got a feeling of that exactly what happens with my snowblower. Thank you so much!!! I got time to fix it now. You save me $500. for a new snowblower.
Yrs ago found a snow blower in the trash. It ran so I gave it to my brother as he has a larger driveway. After a big snow it would not blow the snow which is why it was in the trash. We found whoever did work on it swapped the augers. So it was only pushing the snow to the side. My father and I swapped the augers around and it worked great. Moved heavy snow better than our Toro 524.

It's nice to see a video where nothing just slides apart. All of my stuff is usually seized together. Great video!
There are two Craftsmen in this video..only one has a pulse.. great job. Best to You and Yours.

I agree.

LESSON FROM THIS VIDEO, ALWAYS USE CORRECT SHEARBOLT, MUCH CHEAPER THAN A NEW GEARBOX
I own that same model. Overhauled 4 years ago by watching ur videos. Just blew out 15” + last week. It works great !
I noticed that when you took the unit apart, the bushing on each end of the auger shaft were on backwards. When you reassembled the auger, you put the bushings in the correct way! Thanks for another great video Donyboy!
Nice to know what it looks like in the gearbox, plus a good reminder to grease it regularly. Thanks for the great video.
I agree with all ur ideas for winterizing. What I do is start my lawn mowers once a month during winter also start my snowblower in summer
Excellent video! All the details needed, with nothing left out.
Brilliant commentary what a great teacher you are very enjoyable donyboy
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@donyboy73 I watch Bruce slot hear him talking about you so thought I'd give you a look enjoy what I've seen brilliant.
pollishing the shafts before pulling off the cases might help preserving the seals in the case halves . great vid , i halve to fo this with my 10.5 by 29 canadian tire blower .
Thanks so much for putting this video together, awesome job. Sucked up a soccer ball and stripped the worm gear but she's running like new now.
great older video that popped up in my suggested viewing....love it...great job Don....just like i try to do....grease EVERYTHING....always assume you may have to work on it in the future
Woo ooh! Great video
came apart fine & then found a tiny branch had jammed the auger over causing it to scrap the housing & burned the belt . Shear pins did not fail as the obstruction was housing to second stage auger
Another awesome easy to understand video. Dony you are the best!!!
You should be teaching in a trade school, our children need instructors like you! Great job.
I'm 65 and still never seen snow, presently about 38C here in Brisbane, Australia but your informative, well put together video's never cease to amaze, simply brilliant
was -25c yesterday
@@donyboy73 I can't even begin to get my head around that, our winter here is about 10 C maybe a shade lower but nothing compares to what you guys get, WOW
@@dashaB-sl4pu but the heat waves you get are unreal though
@@donyboy73 We are presently having the worst summer here on record, records are being smashed here daily for all the worst reasons, biggest bushfires known down south in Tasmania, massive flooding in North Queensland and everything in between is in a massive slow roast over 40C and more records smashed for consecutive days of it
@@dashaB-sl4pu wow the asphalt must be melting
Hey Don I'm new to your channel and new to the whole utube experience. I really enjoyed the video it was very informative and shows you a step by step procedure on how to dismantle, repair and reassemble. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us I truly appreciate it.
I would have used a wire wheel on the shaft first to take it a part. Clean is always better when taking things apart. Good Video.
This guy is fantastic. Very thorough and the video is very well put together
I love that you give part numbers. I'm going to start doing that as well. Keep up the great work
nice video, customers in general don’t realize how much work is involved in a job like this. think it’s proper to give them an according bill for all the labour involved. maybe next time they think twice about replacing those sheer pins with regular bolts.
Yes, it also appears the customer ran the snowblower through a field of fist-sized rocks!!!
#clueless
I know it’s a lot of work but on those cheap machines you can just split the gear box, take out the sheer pins and the cheap tins give you plenty of room to weasel it off the driveshaft. I had the same machine and it took about half an hour start to finish. Was still running when I gave it away 5 years later.
Nice! That's a new snowblower right there. I'm pretty confident I can do mine know. Thanks D!
Beautiful instructive vidéo Don! Thanks to take the time!
How do you not have over a million subscribers you're like the Small Engine King
Awesome work and nice close up camera work . Thx.

Great video Donyboy. I enjoy watching all of your videos.
Glad you like them!
Wow you are an awesome repair artist! Paint and everything! The quality and detail of your repair videos are so good!
Boy that must of been costly for the customer! Nice job.
Great work! I learned a lot. I appreciate your teachings.
Excellent video and clear instructions.
Great instruction as usual Donny. I don't live where it snows, but I'll always have the knowledge after this...
Clair, net, précis et complet. Bravo Donald !
merci
I got a feeling of that exactly what happens with my snowblower. Thank you so much!!! I got time to fix it now. You save me $500. for a new snowblower.
Yrs ago found a snow blower in the trash. It ran so I gave it to my brother as he has a larger driveway. After a big snow it would not blow the snow which is why it was in the trash. We found whoever did work on it swapped the augers. So it was only pushing the snow to the side. My father and I swapped the augers around and it worked great. Moved heavy snow better than our Toro 524.
Nice big snowblower. I have a John Deere made by Ariens. That's a beast.
As usual..... Outstanding and informative video... This might be your best yet.... And that's sayin sumthin. Hope you and your family are well.
