So glad I found your channel! The two videos on this repair were exactly what I needed. With you guidance I was able to do this repair on my own snowblower! Thanks again and keep up the great work.
A sheared pin is frozen in my 24” MTD snowblower. I had to choose to try and repair this myself or hand it over to a Pro; after watching your video, I’ve decided to go with a Pro. Thank you for helping me make a decision!
Just for "novice" DYI's those were bolts that were bent bolts not sheerpins at the start of video that he removed. The owner did a quick fix and never bought proper pins. Bolts are hardened steel and sheer pins are a soft brass material made to break off before damage to the gear. Always good to buy spare pins with purchase or to have on standby so this doesn't happen. Good job with the video, it will be helpful for lots of people.
As an ex Sears Tech, you need to replace all the bearings and clean off the rust and notice that the gear in the box was brass and the other steel this is done so that the brass gear is meant to wear out, but the owner put in the wrong shear bolts! You use Bentonite grease for the gear box only! Good luck!
I just did this job today before I saw this video. It is actually an easy job. This is a great video though, just follow exactly what this guy says and it should be a piece of cake. Very informative, well edited and filmed.
What recommendations do you have for penatrating oil? I recently bought a used, older, Craftsman 8.5 - 26" blower that needs some TLC. Cleaned up the non adjustable carb and got it running but found out that the impeller had taken a good hit and 2 of the 4 impeller blades are slighty bent causing them to touch the backside of the housing. Got that problem taken care of but moving forward, I noticed that the auger blades are seized to the auger shaft. I retired and no longer have my welders, touches or access to a hydraulic press. Not in a hurrry to get it running for this winter but looking to find a product to help break down the rust bond between the shaft and auger blades this winter. One recommendation is a blend of ATF and acetone. What would you suggest? Thanks in advance, Mike
Thanks, used the ATF and acetone on one side. After 3 hours I was able to get it to start moving with the help of two pipe wrenches, one on the stub shaft and the other on the auger shaft so there is still hope. The auger gear box appears to operate smoothly but it only has a fill plug so will check that out after I get both auger blades off. Thanks for your great informative videos 👍
I have a 5hp/22 in Craftsman snowblower and I remove one of the impellers by taking out the pin ( left side only) , the impeller on the right would not come off. its Siege so I was wondering how can I take it off I put it in a vise it and hit it with a hammer it didn't come off , I used a pitman arm puller it will not come off , I put a torch to it , it still didn't come off how can I take it off without damaging the rode , please make a video on that
Great video! I have this exact snowblower under the Tecumseh brand, made by Murray I believe. One quick note, the gear you call the ring gear, I believe that's actually the worm gear.
Thanks for making these videos. I knew nothing about maintaining them before I watched your videos. I just found a snowblower for free that runs and I am really excited to tear into it and see what's needing for repair. You have saved me hundreds of dollars!
Need some help!! I've got an ariens st824 that when the auger comes under load it stops. Auger rotates without load. Have tried to remove the worm gear from shaft but it has no key way only a pin that goes through the shaft and it will not budge. What can I do to get it off.
The easiest way to get the grease and bronze broken gear bits out of gear case is to put the parts in a container of boiling water. Let it sit 5 / 10 minutes and the grease will melt and then you can use a air blow nozzle to clean out the housing. Allot faster than trying to use brake cleaner and all it cost you was a couple of quarts of water.
Maybe you can help me. Have a craftsman 42" 2 stage snowblower. I recently just got it back together after replacing the shaft that snapped. The propeller are spinning backwards pushing the snow outward instead of inwards. Looking for insights before I tear it back apart. Thanks
You most likely installed the gear box upside down, unbolt it and rotate it 180 degrees Or, you have your auger blades on the wrong sides If the snow is pushing left and right, instead of towards the center, then it's the blades If the snow is being pushed farther out, like a sidewalk sweeper, then the gear box is probably upside down
Great and informative video. I will be using this help to tackle the exact same issue on my Craftsman 8.5/24 snowblower. How did you know the part number that you required? I am unable to find the manual for my snowblower I purchase used and needing repair. I have a C950-52808-0 model number. It is very close to yours and I am also unable to find your model number's manual online. Hopefully it's the same part number you used, but I would just like to be 100% sure before I order the replacement worm gear. Thanks.

Good video. My auger was spinning freely so I watched this and didn’t get the part about the shear pins early (was fast forwarding to where I could see video of the repair). After I took everything out and removed the left auger I saw it was just a busted shear pin (which worked as designed). Craftsman included a couple spare from when I purchased it and I still had that bag of leftover parts. Easy fix but I took way too much apart, all I needed to do was a 3 minute replacement of the shear pin. Learnt sumthin tho.
Thanks for watching! I believe we charged this job out at around 2hrs I can't exactly remember, my old rate of $60/hr so $120 labour + parts. My 2019 rate is $65/hr.
@@EliminatorPerformance thank you for replying! I have another question, Amazon carb wont work 2 stroke Toro, it surges badly, do you know why? Also, what's the capacity of your ultrasonic cleaner? I'm looking to get one too.
@@dougsfan9984 it surges because the idle circuit (low idle speed jet) is most likely clogged, or too small. Follow this video to get an idea of what you can do: m.ruclips.net/video/Z6F38bSxSp4/видео.html Also,y Ultrasonic cleaner has a 6L capacity, it's mainly for larger carbs. Working on lawnmowers, you only need a 3L.
Yes usually all the mower carbs I've done have fit in my old 3L cleaner. I purchased a 6L because it's bigger and fits ATV and Dirt bike carbs. You use more cleaner fluid though.
Is it possible to get the gearbox off without splitting the machine? My issue is the same as this machine with the geabox, but I just want to rip that sucker off, not the entire machine apart.
I cannot pull the auger shaft out of the bearing on the housing of the blower. I have all the auger nuts and bolts out and it is loose, but I can't get it out of that bearing. It's a 2005. Any suggestions?
My snowblower is a Craftsman attachment for my tractor. It's 42" I've found the gears but I can't seem to find the exact part no. The ID of my gear is 1.50/20 tooth. The shaft it's self has a keyed bushing on it. Can you please give me the details that I need to order the correct part? Everything I have found has what looks like a much smaller ID. Thanks for your help
Without a model number, it'll be nearly impossible to find the correct parts. I wouldn't even be comfortable guessing as it could end up costing you $ for the wrong part!

I see why it wore out. It's been packed with grease and that doesn't lubricate it properly. It's supposed to have 80/90 weight gear lube in there (or similar) I use synthetic which is even better.
unfortunately my craftsman shows the gear box as a kit. Although the worm gear itself is available, the other pieces such as keyway are not available individually. Sucks. Went from under $100 to fix to over $250 (average pricing online)
Dude looks like you got lucky getting the pulley off, most of the time they need to be heated with an oxy acetylene torch to expand the ID of the pulley for removal. What kind of lubricant did you use ie: Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster etc. Feel sorry for your customer since the incorrect $2 shear pin will cost him $80+ for the gear plus your labour charges, an expensive mistake!
The ones like these with set screws seem to be easier. Not sure who made this machine (MTD?) but on my Murray 5/24 I am having a hard time getting the pulley off (it has the nut on the end of the shaft holding it on and a square key keeps it from turning on the shaft). I have been putting PB Blaster on it since Wednesday after another few days I will buy a puller and drill two holes in the pulley and also heat it up with a torch and try again.

It should say in the parts list on your manual, or online if you search for parts using the model number.
How fast should the auger spin on Unit like that? I have a similar one and the auger spins slow. Should it match the impeller?
Depends on gearing in the gear box
On mine the auger spins a lot slower than the impeller. It’s normal. I’m guessing so the auger doesn’t overwhelm the impeller with too much snow.
