And the rest drop their primaries before they reach the roof. When the tank attacked the ladder it probably made them drop them, which also explains thy the others only start with a pistol too.
2:16 This entire bit perfectly shows just what will happen if you get distracted and wander away from the others and making this moment the time to reveal the hunter is genius.
Francis seems like an incredible ally to have in a zombie apocalypse. Physically strong, likely has no remorse for killing something that was once human, so when you’re swarmed, he has no problem mowing down legions, and reliable, if you can get him to trust you.
Francis in the trailer: *doesn't even flinch when a tank literally throws a car in his direction, gets smacked by another zombie but moments later pulls zoey up a ledge with one arm. A total badass. Francis in the game: "i HaTe FiSh"
I think what I like the most about the intro is how realistic the ending is. Louis is celebrating that they made it through everything, but then is snapped back into reality by Bill when reminded that all they did was cross the street. This perfectly reflects the game where what feels like a lot of progress going from one chapter to the next feeling like a lot of progress is in reality something that could’ve been done in like 5 minutes in life before the infection
This is probably the greatest video game intro of all time. It teaches you literally everything in the game, shows you all of the types of infected (except for the Boomer), all of the mechanics, and even the character’s personalities can be interpreted heavily from it. Whenever I play Left 4 Dead 1 and see this, it never fails to get me excited to play the game.
if you look carefully at 0:25 you will see the remains of the boomer leaning against the wall. Probably the goo that Bill puts on Francis is his, which would explain the horde of zombies a short time later in the alley
You know, I'd like to think the boomer is the zombie with the hand sticking out since it shows the green ooze that a boomer normally uses. And thus, attracts all the zombies
The game where you actually needed teammates to survive. Miss this game Update - Stop crying, I started playing it but pirated one however I miss my buddies for lan party back in 2010
Damn, you remind me me of 2010. I was a sixth grader at that time. During class, I used to daydream me and four other classmates as Left 4 Dead Survivors (me as Bill, my best friend as Louis, another close friend as Francis, and my crush as Zoey). Damn, these memories.
Wow this trailer has aged incredibly well. Valve really knows how to make a cinematic. That shot of them running against the the white background is amazing at 2:51
Then there's the added benefit of the cinematic highlighting pretty much all of the game's core features: shotguns, SMGs, assault rifles, dual pistols, the hunter, smoker, witch, boomer, tank, pipebombs/throwables, car alarms, hordes, getting pinned. It's all there!
And when you realise when you start the first level you're actually right there on that SOS roof top... Honestly this game is amazing and deserves top be in more top 10 of all time lists.
@@blastermaster5039 That is terribly wrong. It's "To anyone who can hear this, proceed to Mercy Hospital for evacuation! Repeat! Proceed to Mercy Hospital for evacuation!"
Teamwork! Sadly, some people just like to rush through it and leave on their own...like why? Then they end up getting caught by a smoker, Jockey, or Charger 🙄
@@ufosighting1563 To be fair. I've played both games a whole lot. One useful thing I learned is that the enemies are infinite. The longer you take to get through the level, the more damage you are guaranteed to take. There is a good balance of going fast and looking around.
@@CopShowGuy i agree, but still you better have teamwork, and rush trought the end, i seen some people that only has 1 of the two and did not so good.....

You don't need boomer bile to attract the infected. You don't get a moment to breathe, there will come any random moment an infected will come after you.
2023 and this trailer still slaps. I have recently started playing this again with friends (spent our christmas eve and new year's eve countdown with this) and it sure does never gets old! I made so many memories from this game and still making new ones.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game intro that could A. Set up the start of the game B. Teach players so much about it before they even start, and C. Be just plain awesome all at the same time.
1) Introduce the monsters and how the weapons mechanism work 2) End of intro also start of the game 3) You need teamwork to survive 4) A game that actual looks like intro (I mean look at those fake game ads)
Knowing that this trailer ends where the game begins, I think it's a nice touch that Zoey drops her secondary pistol at 3:53, so she starts with just one like the other survivors
It's almost 2024 and this trailer never gets old. Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 are one of my favorite zombie games that I played when I was in 5th and 6th Grade. And guess what, I’M STILL PLAYING it today 😅😭
I find it amazing how even after 15 years or more, people are still finding and acknowledging details in the trailer we’ve never seen before… God I love l4d
Things the intro teaches you about the gameplay, like some kind of hidden low-key tutorial: 0:28 - The infected are mutating, and rapidly so. Took them only 2 weeks. There's more to this than just generic zombies. 1:11 - Existence of Witches. 1:22 - Random Horde attacks. 1:27 - Witches are startled by light. 1:32 - Doors can hold infected back, but not for long since they are inevitably broken. 1:37 - Francis shoves a zombie back. 1:41 - Louis keeps shooting the witch and she's still not dead. This wasn't worth the trouble - should've just left her alone. 1:44 - Smoker introduction: his one of a kind screech and his ability to attack survivors from range with his tongue. Bill can't escape himself - Francis has to save him, which introduces mandatory teamwork aspect. 1:54 - Francis "revives" Bill. 2:03 - Pipe bombs. They beep and attract infected, to the point they they turn 180 and run away from survivors. Very useful. 2:17 - Hunter introduction. Extremely agile and nible, stalking you from the roofs. 2:29 - Hunter Pounce. Once again, Louis can't escape himself and has to be saved by Zoey - teamwork is mandatory or you're dead. 2:38 - Cars that blink in yellow are bad. Very bad. Loud sounds bad in general (but not gunfire?...) 2:45 - Proper Horde attracted by a loud sound. Big trouble. 3:00 - Tank introduction: can punch cars and use them as projectiles to a devastating effect. Tank's theme can be heard for the first time. 3:06 - Tank doesn't give a shit about other infected. 3:12 - "Run or shoot?" "Both" - best / optimal tactic to deal with Tanks. 3:26 - Ladders. 3:39 - Tank's rumble throw. 3:47 - Tanks can climb. 4:02 - Survivors can pull their hanging friends. 4:08 - Ammo stockpile and medkits can be seen. You'll learn to love the sight of these. 4:12 - "I can't believe we made it..." "Son, we just crossed the street." - every step a fight. You'll fight for your goddamn life just trying to cross the street. 4:24 - Previous statement, solidified. Notes: - Bill is the only one armed with a Tier 2 weapon - M16 rifle, while Louis and Francis are armed with tier 1 UZI and pump-action shotgun respectively, and Zoey uses secondary dual 9mm's for some reason. - Innacuracy: Witch fails to break through the door, when in the game she breaks it in a single hit. - Boomer is the only special infected who isn't shown here. I wonder why. - The ending of the intro acts as the start of the first "No Mercy" campaign. During the events of the intro all survivors lose their primary weapons: Francis loses his shotgun when Tank hits him, Bill drops his rifle while climbing the crumbling ladder and Zoey loses her 2nd pistol when she almost falls. Louis is the only exception - you can't see the moment when he loses his UZI, yet he starts the game without it. Plothole much? - The remains of a ladder can be seen in game, blocking a path. Strangely, no corpses or remains can be seen behind (or under) it.
@@SadenIsWatchin Yeah, but we don't see his model, don't hear his noises, and the goo doesn't seem to have any effect on Francis (or Bill, for that matter). So while one could argue that was boomer, it is in no way an introduction all other specials got. It doesn't teach anything mechanic wise and so in-game boomer is a suprise.
@@ArtekGeneral The Boomer actually does appear, albeit as a corpse in the alley when Bill is checking out the goo, which might be where he got it from. About 25 seconds in lightning goes off and you can see it's blown up corpse leaning against the wall to the bottom left. It's true the Boomer does not make a proper appearance, although he is there if you are curious.
we're really going to argue semantics over the these two games lol..I just view it as one thing, but if I had to choose, it's the original, based on atmosphere , characters, and nostalgia
@i'm lenny face. His AI can be quite derpy at times to the point he can actually die of frustration, it's a code in the game's console. z_tank_frustration_death or something to that effect.
"Son we just crossed the street." When you stop and think about it, and really let that statement sink in, its scary to imagine trying to fight your way OUT of a city. It also shows the veteran is still saavy of his surroundings in combat, even after Vietnam.
Bill is also the one who notices first notices that the witch is a zombie, and comes up with the plan to fight the tank ("Run or shoot?" "Both!"). That instinctual, on the fly decision making is very likely something he developed in Vietnam and it serves him just as well in the zombie apocalypse. The character moments are great in this intro. You can see that Zoey is the kind one, wanting to rescue everyone she can (Going to help the "Crying woman" and saving Louis from the hunter. Louis, while scared and out of his depth, is still the optimistic one in the group ("We made it!") Francis is having the time of his life and likes making fun of the others , even daring the Tank to fight him in the alley. He's in his element as much as Bill. And all of them protect the rest of the team no matter what. Even Francis. Capturing the characters and the spirit of the game excellently, in addition to cinematically showing off many of the mechanics. This is a very smartly written intro.
@Spider-Man So true, Vietnam was the most disturbing and psycholigical war that ever existed imo. Going from lies, cold war, civil rights movements, nuclear threats, spy agents, mobsters, drugs, dense jungles and you name it. There is thousand and thousand of stories about what happened in Vietnam, that everyday when you think you know it you just do half of it. Vietnam is a very complex subject and that's why no one likes to talk about it. It was a very disturbing war, since it was like a turf war instead of a war with fronts.
I can’t believe L4D1 is almost 16 years old. I remember my first time playing it. One of my childhood friends brought his 360 over, and we booted up some co-op. I fell in love with it from there. Eventually got it pirated on my dad’s windows xp pc, and having not played a PC game before.. I was trying to move with the arrow keys. Ahh. Silly 11 year old me. This game and L4D2 is what got me into PC gaming.
My first time playing it was going to gamestop and looking for a game to play when I was like 7 or 8 and I saw some strange looking sliver and green case for the xbox 360 and I inspected it and saw that it was a zombie game. I immediately knew I had to get it, and my mom bought it for me. On the way home. I was beyond excited. I knew what zombies were, but I never really played a zombie game at that point. When I booted it up for the first time, I was even too scared to leave the rooftop because I expected the bots to lead the way, but they never did.
This trailer will ALWAYS be criminally underrated for what it was. I'm guessing the budget for this was a hell of a lot lower than most films these days and it still captures attention just as well. Valve did a wonderful job with the musical scores.
Valve nailed this game the fact that it's held up so well to this day is crazy to me I miss the memories I had made while playing it with my brother and some friends I don't think I would be the person I am today if this game wouldn't have been so much fun I had lots of family issues at the time and this game seemed to be the only way I could escape reality. I am having trouble describing this Mono Lisa of a game it's truly a masterpiece and I'd give the world to feel that feeling of playing it again for the first time. Yes, I know I have horrible grammar and my dictionary is smaller than a cockroach but you get the point. This game was a godsent
what you fool dont realize is valve cold have made a very NICE and more expensive trailer this is 2007-2011 valve top of their game as developers but they chose to do it in SFM like the tf2 shorts because thats the closest to the in game as you can ever get no shaddy or enhanced graphics for a trailer just sfm models as they are in game
@@ibrune8371 Vale always knocked it out of the park for their soundtracks to games. My favorite album to pull of the shelf and put in a CD player is still the TF2 soundtrack.
both L4D1 and 2 trailers are just oozes with personalities, and it shows so well Bill is a grizzled war vet who is level headed and a natural leader for the group Francis is a bit snarky and rough but ultimately a nice guy Zoey is a caring girl Louis is too careless and a bit of an optimist L4D2: Ellis being a talkative mechanic with a penchant for humor at every opportunity Nick can be a bit selfish and sly but he knows his best chance at survival is to stick together Rochelle is a worrywart but she cares for the crew, and she's obviously the planner of the group Coach is coach
Let's be honest: Coach is the glue that holds the L4D2 cast together. Nick would've screwed the other two and died himself shortly after if Coach hadn't pulled them together.
We all (even today) need to appreciate how amazing this game is. I was maybe 8 years old when my cousin showed me this and it was in the winter time. I remember thinking zombies were going to happen 😂 "ah this is going to get bad" will forever be in my head with the sound of a car alarm and the hoard in the background
This is what I love about the left 4 dead trailer, it proves that teamwork is essential! If nobody was there to help Bill from the smoker, then Bill would be a punching bag for zombies. If nobody was there to help Louis from the hunter then his insides would be on the outside. If nobody was there to help Francis when he got slapped by the tank, then he would be Demolished by the zombies and the tank. And finally, if nobody was there to grab Zoey and pull her up before she fell off the roof, she would have fell to a pit of zombies and would’ve gotten ripped apart. I just found this awesome
@@grizzlyowlbear3538 even L4D dont reffers the zombies as zombies, They're actually alive but in a Constant rage all the time, thus why the game calls them infected rather than zombies or Undead (common infected/uncommon infected/special Infected), apart from the credits that states "X zombies got harmed during the recordings", but I think Its more of a 4th wall break rather than the game saying that They're zombies. They're not walking corpses like zombies because the disease of l4d actually makes the infecteds lose their conscience, but not kill them on the spot, instead they die over time due to sickness, but while They're alive they Will do their best to either infect other survivors or kill the ones that are immune. Both the L4D survivors and the players reffers them as zombies because thats what they look like the most, Lol.
I know it's been said many times over, but those trailer perfectly shows the mechanics of the game. Both showing how you need to stick together to survive and all the special infected with their abilities and how to take them out. This is such a wonderful game.
The zombies actually do react to gunshots, flashlights and even footsteps, but only when it's nearby, likely due to the fact that their hearing is severely damaged and gunshots sound loud to us but extremely muffled to them, indistinguishable from most other noises. The reason high pitched sounds get them riled up is because they have greatly increased sensitivity to them, so they're not chasing you when they come, they're trying to attack what's causing them extreme pain and assume it's you.
@@AParticularlyConcernedCitizen never thought of this. interesting so kinda like sharks with humans in the water. they assume we seals so attack us not knowing we humans lol

I had a dream where i woke up and it was Jan 1st 2021 and I said to myself “damn what a shitty year, at least it’s over” then got out of bed and walked to my door and right when I touched the handle the Tank theme started playing and I woke up. I don’t normally have dreams but that one was crazy
God, this game was such a masterpiece. I love how the trailer introduces you to most of the game mechanics and then ends at the beginning of No Mercy - right where you start the game.
I especially love the fact that the surroundings and the structures in the intro are almost same as the ones in game. The wire fence the zombies were crawling up, the car the tank threw, the alley the survivors fled into...
High Velocity Gunshots which are loud enough to give permanent hear damage without proper protection are drawing no infected to the scene, but a car alarm does. I always loved that part.
One of the things I love about this trailer is that all of its core elements are in the game. Most trailers that show something epic happening, ever rarely have you doing the exact same thing in the game (unless it was like a scripted event or something) but throwing bombs, making final stands with your friends, and being charged at by a horde at any given moment absolutely takes place in game. Best trailer/intro ever. Also, Jen Taylors “Run like hell” scream is severely underappreciated
When Zoey is about to fall and screams to Francis always feels so authentic to me. The voice actors really put their hearts into their characters and it shows. 3:55 Edit: Wow, I did not expect this kind of response, glad to know you guys feel the same! I loved growing up with the L4D community, and it seems like we all share a lot in common. Thanks to the guys who played with me and put up with this squeaker without judgement back in the day! This community is the best. Love you guys ❤️
Bill was the last one to climg the ladder securing that everyone is climbed up before him. He was the leader for a reason and he constantly felt responsible for others. From the very first appearance in the series till the very end 😭

i love seeing everyone still rewatching this iconic badass intro 1.) we love this franchise so much 2.)we miss this franchise so much 3.) we want left 4 dead 3 to come out already 4.)the fandom of this franchise is still very active and don't want this franchise to be left for dead 😉
This is the very first video I ever watched on RUclips. It’s 2008 I’m playing around on my laptop, just finished playing Dead Rising. I wanted a new Zombie game, then I discovered this game. L4D was the first online coop experience I ever had in a video game (as I was the only person in my friends group to have online) I was hooked from the trailer to the actual release date. I remember begging my mum to get me this and she did! I played this game right till L4D2 was announced. The community I met during my time playing L4D will always be remembered, the times we spent playing expert trying to beat it. Or the times we spent hosting our own Versus game with the friends I made during these times. The amount of glitches we did that I still remember doing. Oh how the years have gone by fast, I hope everyone I ever met is doing well as I know many of them never came back online at some point in time. The gents and ladies I met during this was truly something to remember. Still today I hop back on the games as they are still one of the best online coop games to exist.
Its annoying originally the intro used to have reloads like when Bill before he got smoked he was reloading giving the smoker time to get him, and Zoey originally ran out of ammo when shooting the hunter and the hunter tried to kill Zoey, louis grabbed a pistol on the ground and the hunter jumped away climbing and got killed by Louis landing on the car alarm edit: I knew about this cuz theres literally a vid that shows the beta version of the intro
I’m torn between which group of survivors I like more. In this game it’s a highly intense brief storytelling of their start of survival, which was awesome But in L4D2, it was a montage of the other 4 survivors taking everything out some comedy, and took it in a new direction. The tank was truly a fearsome enemy here and they barely defeated it, in 2 Ellis pretty much blows his head off with the grenade launcher and downs it in one shot. Could really go with both.
You have to remember that Left for Dead 1 took place 2 Weeks after the infection started, then as the trailer states, special infected JUST became a thing. So the trailer is basically their reaction to seeing all special infection for the first time. Left for dead 2 took place 1 week after left for Dead 1 ended (The sacrifice happens as LFD2 survivors make it to the mall and take the car). So although 1 week really isn’t that big of a difference in skill, the characters not only were aware of the special infected but also had names for them (according to rochelles remarks about the special infected and the names the other guys gave them) and how to take them out.
Here's one scary detail: The fact that the virus takes only 2 weeks to mutate to special/stronger infected like them in the video really shows how deadly this virus is. Possibly the deadliest virus i seen.
I was blown away by this trailer. Usually zombies in games were slow. I was excited to play this game. I was blown away by the demo and then blown away when I finally played the game

2:37 the scariest part of the game
Here They Come
This entire intro is some of the best atmosphere building in any medium ever
And it's also a tutorial! Ingenious
And it's also litterally seconds before the start of the game.
Things the intro teaches you about the gameplay, like some kind of hidden low-key tutorial:
0:28 - The infected are mutating, and rapidly so.
Very bad. Loud sounds bad in general (but not gunfire?...)
2:45 - Proper Horde attracted by a loud sound.
Notes:
- Bill is the only one armed with a Tier 2 weapon - M16 rifle, while Louis and Francis are armed with tier 1 UZI and pump-action shotgun respectively, and Zoey uses secondary dual 9mm's for some reason.
Boomer was in the trailer. Bill smeared Boomer goo on Francis

Hi c:
@@EpslionBear ok that's some clever coding
"Son we just crossed the street."
When you stop and think about it, and really let that statement sink in, its scary to imagine trying to fight your way OUT of a city.
Louis, while scared and out of his depth, is still the optimistic one in the group ("We made it!")
Francis is having the time of his life and likes making fun of the others , even daring the Tank to fight him in the alley. He's in his element as much as Bill.
And all of them protect the rest of the team no matter what. Even Francis. Capturing the characters and the spirit of the game excellently, in addition to cinematically showing off many of the mechanics. This is a very smartly written intro.
@Spider-Man plot twist, Bill was actually the Army Chef in the Vietnam War.
@@ChadHellgado lmao
@Spider-Man So true, Vietnam was the most disturbing and psycholigical war that ever existed imo.
Going from lies, cold war, civil rights movements, nuclear threats, spy agents, mobsters, drugs, dense jungles and you name it.
There is thousand and thousand of stories about what happened in Vietnam, that everyday when you think you know it you just do half of it. Vietnam is a very complex subject and that's why no one likes to talk about it. It was a very disturbing war, since it was like a turf war instead of a war with fronts.
@@ChadHellgado Now i just imagine a poorly animated Gmod version of a kitchen and Bill sitting there smoking 19 cigarettes
14 years later, it's still one of the most iconic cutscenes that help built the rest of the games being released now.

Bill is a grizzled war vet who is level headed and a natural leader for the group
Francis is a bit snarky and rough but ultimately a nice guy
Zoey is a caring girl
Louis is too careless and a bit of an optimist
L4D2:
Ellis being a talkative mechanic with a penchant for humor at every opportunity
Nick can be a bit selfish and sly but he knows his best chance at survival is to stick together
Rochelle is a worrywart but she cares for the crew, and she's obviously the planner of the group

They're not walking corpses like zombies because the disease of l4d actually makes the infecteds lose their conscience, but not kill them on the spot, instead they die over time due to sickness, but while They're alive they Will do their best to either infect other survivors or kill the ones that are immune.

In this game it’s a highly intense brief storytelling of their start of survival, which was awesome
But in L4D2, it was a montage of the other 4 survivors taking everything out some comedy, and took it in a new direction. The tank was truly a fearsome enemy here and they barely defeated it, in 2 Ellis pretty much blows his head off with the grenade launcher and downs it in one shot.

Left for dead 2 took place 1 week after left for Dead 1 ended (The sacrifice happens as LFD2 survivors make it to the mall and take the car). So although 1 week really isn’t that big of a difference in skill, the characters not only were aware of the special infected but also had names for them (according to rochelles remarks about the special infected and the names the other guys gave them) and how to take them out.
yeah i think it was about that time that stuff like dead rising and lollipop chainsaw were a thing so they went with that kind of vibe
15 years and no other game has come close.
Looking back, this was one of the last games I ever bought a physical copy of.
2:28 what a great scream for that zombie type
ICONIC
3:58 I love how Francis helped Zoey 😄
Don't get me wrong I love this part but she had enough time to grab on the ledge with both hands
@@cartrellpack6112 she just want to kill the tank xd

@@lilmoonie gotta get those points for damaging the tank.
@@lilmoonie the Tank could be a bigger threat. If they didn't kill him there.Would you like to start the campaign with a Tank behind you???
Here's one scary detail:
The fact that the virus takes only 2 weeks to mutate to special/stronger infected like them in the video really shows how deadly this virus is. Possibly the deadliest virus i seen.
This age well like fine wine
I miss playing this game
3:43 she said "Goahwhahaha"

Is it me or does the Tank’s roaring have an unbelievable, intimidating amount of bass in it.
The first time I heard this, the tank roar did not have that much bass in it at that time
Kind of sounds like the Charger when it charges at you.
@@RubyyVistaThat’s what i always thought
I was blown away by this trailer. Usually zombies in games were slow. I was excited to play this game. I was blown away by the demo and then blown away when I finally played the game
The "We made it I cant believe we made it!"

When zoey yelled Francis, that was really realistic! Like that was really good voice acting
