I’ve owned 3 houses, 1 in south Florida and 2 new homes in Texas. I wish I could scream this from the rooftops: if you don’t have $10k-$20k AFTER the closing, don’t buy a house. In 10 years I’ve had so many things happen to our homes and things to replace that average about $10k a year. It’s definitely something to consider.

Okay, I have a confession. There was an empty house on our block and we wanted to make sure that nobody loud or obnoxious moved in. So we got together with our neighbors and every time we saw somebody that had screaming kids or big loud vehicles, we come out of our houses and start yelling at each other. It was hilarious because our neighbors across the street were from Puerto Rico and they would come out screaming in Spanish. When the prospective people drove away, we'd all high five. 😂 Anyway, we ended up having a nice friendly family move-in that had two beautiful children, coincidentally they were from New York.🎉

Long time Orlando resident here. After attempting to buy in the Orlando area, I FINALLY got someone to accept my offer. (Took 9 offers over the span of 2 years). The hunt was WILD and I can totally relate to the horrors of the differences between online vs real life. One place we walked into was super cute online. Got there, realtor yelled she was coming in, no response. Walk in and two half naked, very stoned guys wandering around a trashed place. Holes in the wall, roaches on the counter, it was a nightmare. Got out in less than 15 sec. Best of luck to you and your hubs on the hunt!

Needless to say I declined the offer and moved on to another job but stayed in PA. I hate FL weather, it's a no for me. I laughed during this whole video as we experienced it as sell. Be sure all the time plumbing is working as people break into the houses down there knowing the are empty and cut all the copper out... I couldn't believe that they just gave us codes to enter the house and no one was with us so they have no clue how long people are in the homes, gutting the place. 💜😘

My sister still lives in Florida and she told me that the newer construction tends to look like that because corporate investors have been throwing up so many homes for rental properties and the construction quality is trash. Wavy walls, poor window seals, etc. I'd be really cautious and definitely do a thorough video walkthrough when you finally choose your new place. And the HOA clauses, even for renters, are ridiculous. Edit: Oh yeah, make friends with the lizards. they're everywhere anyway and they little ones are pretty chill.

I don’t know how my husband and I got so lucky but when we first moved to the town we live in now (San Angelo, TX) 13 years ago, we found a cute enough rental house that we moved in and two years later was forced out of but ended up finding a place on the same street with a new owner. Lived there for four years when they decided to sell the place. I shit you not, when I say we found another house on the same street owned by a totally different person. We lived there for seven years when we finally agreed we would stay and SA was the place we wanted to be so we purchased a home.
This was 4 years ago. But we literally started at the bottom of the street and in the end we lived on the top of the hill. Each time rent got more and more and more expensive. By the time we left the last rental (7 yrs) we had paid that lady $108,000!!
I still kick myself in the head about that to this day. That could have been $100G’s on this house we live in now if we would have made our mind up quicker.
Sorry for the long story. But best of luck on finding the perfect new home!! Sometimes driving in neighborhoods you are interested in is when you can find that for rent signs. You deserve all the good things in life and having a home you are happy in is everything. Renting or buying. ❤

That foundation is my favorite purchase of the year so far. I actually got a perfect match, which I tell you has never happened in my life. Now, the rest of my foundations are horrible and orange.
Florida traffic is probably similar to Georgia traffic. Either ridiculously aggressive, or too polite, especially at stop signs. You have the right of way! GO!!!! 😂

My boyfriend moved to Portland to be with me and has a beautiful 4 bed/3.5 bath newer construction home with a fenced in back yard and patio for rent in Ocala. It also has an in-law suite for guests with another living area. Not sure you are looking that far out of Orlando but no big storms and great equal distance to Orland, Tampa, St Augustine, Gainesville etc. I love his place and he will be a cool landlord. But no Sephora so that is painful. 🤣

Wherever you move to next, just make a point to smudge the house with a sage bundle before you move all your stuff in. I hope you choose Ocala to live next, it's close enough to Tampa & Orlando to visit, but not as condensed or expensive to live in.

Best of Luck with your search for a new place! I feel for you girl, moving is the worst! If you buy something don't let your realtor choose the home inspection company. I did and the report showed no problems and there were MANY! Also, try not to buy anything too old because the older the property the more problems there will be and the more expensive they will be to fix.

All of this... is PRECISELY why husband and I are planning a move to the boonies of Virginia. Real estate is cheap (in comparison to where we are now), and I can have some peace and fuckin' QUIET. We got suckered into buying a condo in a community that is 50/50 old grannies/retirees and addicts/dealers and though the _weekly_ popo visits haven't been a thing for a while now, we're so over it. We're sick of the 'burbs. Sick of the drivers, sick of the rude ass people, sick of the noise lol

Real estate is cheap, but be sure to research Virginia taxes first! It is supposed to be "cheaper," but they tax EVERYTHING (except sales), even cars yearly. Feels like cheaper prices, but lots of other little things add up.

    I love your stories!
One of them reminded me of the time my best friend was looking at apartments. We had been looking all over and not seeing much of anything that she liked. One day we were stopped and had lunch at a small burger place. On the way back to our car, I noticed what looked like apartments behind the trees behind the parking lot. We had to drive around to find the entrance. She didn’t feel like stopping at the office, so we just drove around. As we were making our way through the streets I notice a strange looking man glaring in our direction. Standing almost in the middle of the street and as we got closer to him , he didn’t bother moving. I had to drive the car around him, as he stood there and shot us dirty looks. I got the creepiest vibe, anger and like he wanted to murder us. As I was thinking that, my friend said- what is wrong with that man? We are just driving through. I said let’s just get out of here.
Later that evening, I decided to look at reviews. There was one that stood out. This person described moving in on day one and as they were moving their stuff in, somehow accidentally pissed off one of the neighbors who yelled at them about being in his way and too noisy. They apologized, but he just walked away cursing under his breath. It didn’t get better. He was pissed off about everything they did. Even walking by them with various weapons and glaring at them while he did so.
They complained to management, but the only response was- he’s eccentric, but he’s harmless.
Obviously, we didn’t bother looking at that place again!
    Weirdos are everywhere!!

I think I may have the opposite problem. I'm living back at my parent's house, helping look after my 88 year old mum. It's a really convenient location, shops, public transport (I've never driven - my anxiety is bad enough!) everything you need in walking distance and my parents finished paying it off before I was born. The only problem is, my parents bought it when they wanted more space - so there's a lot of work just maintaining the front/back yards (why didn't people in the early 20th century use more of the land to build a bigger house?). I hate gardening, but you really need to keep on top of it.
Anyway, property prices have really gone up - you'd think this was Tokyo or New York rather than Melbourne (Australia) - so after my mum passes away (hopefully not for quite some time), my brother, who also lives here, and I will most likely sell, and get an apartment (believe me, I'm happy single!). It's just that I've been so lucky with the situation, I'm sure I'm going to stuff it up one way or another 😳
Also Theresa, (if you actually read all of this crap😄), buying a property is expensive but something always needs replacing or breaks, so it's best not to buy until you're ready because chances are, it'll be even more expensive than you thought.
I guess you've got to make peace with the fact that you'll never find the perfect place (unless you have ridiculous amounts of money)🤷🏻‍♀️
    Ok, ramble is over!

Love rental search horror stories! One place we went to for an open house was in the middle of evicting the previous tenants and she was crying in the garage. Also, it looked like it had a herd of elephants run through it and the relator couldn't say for sure they were going to replace the carpet. The other place had tenants place their garbage in the carpeted interior hallway for collection. To say it smelled gross was an understatement and it wasn't even hot outside. Our condo at least has thick walls, so we hardly ever hear the neighbors. Being right next to a busy street sucks though for wanting to have the windows open for air flow.

I did get new windows so its slightly better. Also don't have the crappy neighbors i used to. Wish you guys the best of luck finding something soon. Not a peptobismal house! Ok, I have a design fail for you! ♥️
The bearded half of the household saw a listing for a quite newly built house with 6 apartment units, the current residents lived there for 4-5 years, so since it was build, but wanted to move out. The basement was a garage for all with 2 carplaces for each apartment, that triggered him, I think, as we live in quite a big city and parking space is rare. I looked at the pictures and it looked quite nice, so we scheduled a viewing. The current residents greeted us nicely, they seemed ok and we went inside. Both residents did stand on the right side, in front of a big closet, or so I thought... They guided us into the first room on the left, nice, could be my office, then walked backwards and, back to the closet, guided us to the living room. Spacious, a nice little balcony and the kitchen was not directly in the living room, but a bit around the corner, to the left, but an open one. No problems, everything looked fine. From the living room you went right and got to the bedroom, nice, big, fine. As we wanted a two to four room apartment, we were quite on the "this could be it" thoughts. But... Then I asked for the bathroom, I love to take baths and hubby us a shower type, so both should be there, naturally and it was in the listing. But... We haven't seen anymore doors... Well... They guided us to the "closet". Pulled a sliding door and turned on the light. There it was, the bathroom. Shower, bathtub, toilet, all on the inside of the house, no window, well, there was one. The whole freaking wall facing the way from door, room and then living room was made out of glass! And I just looked at hubby, he went in and I could see him, though the, slightly tinted, glass, head to toes! I just started laughing and hubby told the residents that THAT was not our kink. 🤣 We left and everytime someone tells freaky house storys, bring that up, so here you go! 😘

Hi Theresa, never thought i would say this but house hunting stories are almost as good as the subway stories. The noise issues crack me up a bit knowing you used to live in one of the densest parts of Queens in an apartment building. Honestly, I live in suburbia now outside of Chicago, but having lived in city neighborhoods in the past and visited rural areas I’m with you in being far more freaked out by something happening in a rural isolated area (haunted or not) than in a busy noisy city (which you can usually tune out once you’re over a certain number of floors up). Also construction will find you no matter where. Moved into a perfectly fine apartment building back when my kids were small (and one not existent yet) and that’s when the building decide to replace all the concrete balconies which involved jack-hammering always at the exact moment my toddler went down for a nap. Also randomly turning off the water to the building unexpectedly, with no notice and when I had to diaper my children. Thankfully there was a place that did appreciate quiet and had running water right across the street: the public library so if I could have moved in there, I would have. Best of luck finding a new place and may the Construction gods ever be in your favor even if the traffic and parking gods are not (nothing appeases them). Commerce- it’s a good thing. 😀
